i loved tch. there's nothing wrong with it, the whole thing is good.

...except maybe the big ugly thing at the beginning of dayvan cowboy (should be shorter) and maaybe farewell fire is kinda odd.. but that's it.

i like where BOC is going with their music, i like the inclusion of new instruments, change is good (in some cases) in my opinion.

and PS anyone who has anything against OSTRE is just..... a newb. cuz that is one of my fav songs of all time :getlost:

I think that's the intro of dayv cowboy is well placed, because there is a certain melody; and it gives a sensation of elevation (the wind blowing). The second part with the heaven's guitar and the perfect beats are nice too. this is a very good song btw

After this I listened to geogaddi and I didn't like it, I was quite vomitting at some tracks, I realized they were too crazy for my ears, they took too much acid to play music I stupidly thought (cliché of psyché music) But I knew this album was a kind of big forest where I just wasn't able to go inside.

This is awesome. Mind if I use it in my sig?

Oscar is one of my least favorite BoC tracks and Ive been listening to them since 98 (cool huh folks)

But I guess you are using the word newb in a crazy ironic internets 21st century way.

you loved tch=campfire, not tch=trans canada highway. the first one is splendid, especially dayvan and farewell fire.

ostre is a good track, but mostly because of its complexity - apart from that, it doesn't really go anywhere. similar to skyliner. i like them, but it's more like appreciation. skyliner i like better

btw what does it mean - skyliner - an airplane?

yeah, i'm not entirely sure ... i'm thinking it's sort of a variant of "skyline," like, you're on a road trip and see the skyline of a city in the distance

lool okay I am a real newbee, loganfive confirm it!

I didn't listen to this album care fully and I don't remember how it sounds. So it means it was not that good, not boc. :tongue2:

But right now i listened to "old tunes vol 1 2" (the true???) and I didn't feel a big exploration like in geog or mhtrtc. The songs are not "linked" together.

Exactly! You hit the nail on the head. They aren't bad tracks per se, but they feel more like intellectual exercises. They don't seem to have as much purpose or passion or personality as I find in other BoC music.

And as far as the Old Tunes go, lost cloud, I think A Few Old Tunes and Old Tunes Vol. 2 flow quite well; Old Tunes Vol. 1 is a bit more of a mixed bag for me, it feels less cohesive. But the first two I mentioned really seem to work together; the tracks share a similar feeling. Certainly they are not "concept albums" like Geogaddi and TCH. But I'm not sure MHTRTC was that much of a concept album, even if BoC intended it to be, and Maxima wasn't either IMO. For those earlier works, it's more about the mood of all the tracks when taken together.

I have strong visual/memory associations with each BoC period

Old Tunes: feels like early teenage years, living in a small town with forests nearby. Very cinematic for me, actually, in a Gus Van Sant or Stand By Me kind of way. Very little that actually makes me think of drugs or psychadelia in these tunes, as good as they are.

Maxima: Basically the same as Old Tunes, but with a slightly less intimate feel, a bit more universal, a bit more psychadelic.

MHTRTC: not a forest like Old Tunes, definitely more underwater and primal, murky childhood memories as viewed through a druggy haze. In its feel, this actually feels "developmentally" to be going back to a younger, more mysterious place than Old Tunes.

ABPOITC: Unusual, very soothing and autistic, in a good way. This has the fewest memory associations for me, I just find it incredibly peaceful and beautiful. Unique, even in the Board's discography.

Geogaddi: Full bore psychadelia, bad trip mindfuck, musically impressive but not that much I can relate to, really. It impresses me but doesn't quite convince me. And I've had some bad trips.

TCH: Seems to be going back to some of the Old Tunes feel a bit; for some reason this album really reminds me of summer camp as a kid, and that's one of the reasons I like it. I don't get that much of a "road trip" feeling from it, apart from Dayvan, but I definitely hear "the feeling you get after you've had the top of your head blown off by psychadelics" (or however BoC put it in that interview), that breezy, hollow-headed feel you get when you're on the far side of a trip.

It's funny how I used to feel embarrased when I played(and when I still do) MHTRTC and IABPOITC to friends - like, constantly thinking, 'oh, when will this loop part end', 'fuck, the melody isn't audible at all"... Now with the last two records(Campfire and TCH) it's different - I can play them to almost everyone, they sound fine. But the earlier releases I used to enjoy when I was alone, they felt more personal.

nice description of your feelings! I got strong visual imagination too when I listen to boards of canada (I think we are the the only ones in that case) and some times mines looks like your point of view. geogaddi and mhtrtc are the best albums I never listened just for that imagination and emotional power!!

lol I thought that when you said you'd put my sentence in your sign it was a joke but that's not what I see, so thank you! :embrassed:

My brain is very slow

perhaps i didn't choose my wording very well. what i mean is, there's a wealth of other musical approaches out there that boards seem completely unwilling to touch on. they're obviously continuing to work themselves further and further into their furrow, content in the fact that they don't particularly sound like anyone else, don't owe anyone anything (as logan stated), and probably really enjoy making tracks.

boards of canada do not mimic other artists, but instead constantly mimic themselves. i think that's a positive thing, as well as a negative.

whoa, i really disagree with you here ... they have extremely varied approaches to song structure/type/texture, despite the fact that certain patterns occasionally recur (but this happens with every band). maybe if you could explain precisely what you mean by "other musical approaches," our disagreement may just be semantic. i'll agree that they're definitely 'isolated' in a sense, like just very methodically working out their own aesthetic ... but there are definitely some drastic shifts in their sound, and not just 'superficial' instrument-based stuff

i used to feel the same way, especially when playing someone 'happy cycling', desperately waiting for the second, sunnier bit to come along.

sorry for my double answer

it is exactly the same thing for me, when I tried to make my friends listen to geog or mhtrtc they think I just want to be original by listening crazy music (it is what I think they think) because it is true this sound is too much new and pure, just like if you listen to birds, it is beautiful but not "human". So i am ambarassed too. The campfire headphase is more universal, you can listen to it without making "brain stretching" lol but i never felt ashamed while making my friends hear boc because I know it's value and I remember that was the same thing for me when I listened to it for the first time.

One night I played geog and mhtrtc to a friend who didnt know this, and I selected only the tracks which I thought they where more accessible for his first time. by the way we were completely stoned, and he told me: "that music must be listened stoned, if not it becomes bullshit" (in french) (of course he told me the music was wonderfull marvellous...) I thought after that "It's sad, but somewhere its true"

"changing/adding instruments doesn't necessary constitute genuine musical change."

Its all about the sound..it changes a lot to everything.

"every boards track seems to have the bass every whole note, the 1/8th note hi-hats, the same general wash of pads, the same everything. the tonal quality of the sounds being used has changed, but musically, their formula seems to be growing a bit static."

Are you kidding me!??!?

What about Macuarie Ridge??? 84 Pontiac Dreams??? Chromakey Dream Coat, Tears From A Compound Eye, Slow This Bird Down??? etc etc etc are we listening to the same album here?

"that's all i'll say for now...2% battery power remaining."

ok that explains it all 2% battery power left..

Thank you all for that thread! I learnt more english  seriously I think you have all good opinions about BoC and their lasts albums. I will try to add my thought there:

The first song I listened of BoC was aquarius (version 3) and I was stunned! I was so happy to hear something in the same time brand new and much more sky sounding than pink floyd and all others... After more listenings this album is now the best one I've never heard in my life. Each track is a travel through the jungle: a lot of plants, animals, flowers, suns... for me, they created a new way of melodies

It was exactly the same for music has the right for children, I didn't understand it at the begining, but after I found it less intense than geo. Those 2 albums are two planets to discover. It is what I love in boards of canada (those albums): you can listen many times the same album and you will do different trips, you will like it more and more. It's what I call the "tripness" of an album

With the other albums it was a different approach for me. twoism I found it beautiful directly , without listening to it very carefully, but it is even better when you care, i got a feeling of an incomplete, or a too fast album. in the beautiful place... was the same, I loved it since the first rythm.

the others albums less famous like hi scores; hooper bay, I didn't have enough time to "study" them but of course they are good too.

Campfire Headphase: the first time i felt in love with it, and d cowboy was the high point of that surrounding toxic beauty; after this there is a few tracks before slow this bird down which are too flat, too easy, or maybe I am not able to understand them.

trans canada highway: d cowboy:not new, left side drive: wonderfull since the first listening, the rythm is made by a kind of wind, I love it!! heard from telegraph lines: a very classic; "cliché" sound of what the human imagine about heaven, one of my favorite songs of boards of canada now. skyliner: I don't like it so much like the others. Under the coke sign: wonderfull. the remix: I like it very much

I think boc made two kinds of albums: those which needs many listenings and a lot of attention, they include so much different sounds. Those albums which are weird are the best for me. (geog, mhtrtc, twoism..)

and those which catch directly the brain, like tch/tch. Those albums work quickly, they are easier to "access" but still good, there is a different value between the 2 main kinds. To answer the thread I'd say that boc is keeping up the very nice quality music until today and I know they are still able to surprise ourselves by making a new album with another horizon of inspirations! But what boc needs really now is to meet their public/fans in concerts or performances... just like rave parties in the fields of grass!!!

I hope there is not too much mistakes in my english above

classic post, hands down. :alien:

I bet you all that if TCH had ended with, say 1 ambient/1 killer track/1 ambient, most of the people would have praised the album. As simple as that, say put Skyliner as the second to last one.

It's just that I bet most of us just stop the album before the last two tracks. It changes everything, it doesn't feel "complete". The rest is still ace.
