RIP Lemmy

Oh shit. I really thought he may be the first human to reach immortality. My parents' cat also died this morning... in my arms of all places. So that's horrible, but it's also kind of cool that she shares an RIP day with Lemmy. I will temporarily put my atheism aside and imagine little Portia is being pet by Lemmy in some unfathomably awesome afterlife. And Killed by Death should definitely be the soundtrack.

being an ex member of Hawkwind (peak era Hawklord too, not that early 80's free festival lampooning) = eternal seat at the the throne of cosmic musical chaos

2 Lemmy anecdotes from an old roadie friend:

all of Motorhead's crew have/had a rule for every venue they played,,, the only drink to be consumed on site was JD/coke, whatever hour of the day, every day

towards the end, Lemmy got gout, so in order to "enter stage/middle" his crew rigged up an elevator behind the drum kit, which was prone to malfunctioning

the very best of British, what a bloke, they truly dont make em like Mr Kilmister (sp?) any more

rip

I was at this gig  fond memories

RIP Lemmy - I'm actually going to miss the regular reports of him getting into trouble one way or another. Just this summer he had this great article about him:

He has changed his lifestyle – he’s down to a pack of fags a week, and has swapped from Jack and Coke to vodka and orange, apparently to help with his diabetes, – though his assistant wonders whether swapping from one 40% spirit topped with sugar to another 40% spirit topped with sugar is really going to help. “I like orange juice better,” he says. “So, Coca-Cola can fuck off.”

One of the first songs my son liked before he was born was Motorhead: he kicked to furiously was "Ace of Spades." I didn't even play it on purpose (unlike all the ambient and classical I played through headphones when he was still in the womb), it came on the radio while my wife and I were in the car and he started kicking on the beat.

Lemmy is one of those musical legends everyone loved for good reason. I can't think of someone who encapsulated "badass" any better as a guitarist and rock n' roller than him. Besides Motorhead he did awesome stuff with Hawkwind and influenced one of my favorite black metal bands, Darkthrone, when they returned to later stuff.

One of the (if not the) last interview(s) he did, talking about the Paris attacks, his health and his legacy:

I was at the above gig, I remember it just sounding like an old guy shouting and some thrash drums for about an hour.

Nobody really danced / moved about much because every song sounded the same and nobody could understand what he was singing about.

Then they played "ace of spades" as the last track and a bunch of people threw beer (piss?) And started a mosh pit.

So anyway I guess it was badass in the end. True rock and roll didn't give a shit legend and i respect his life choices.

(Gig info: queens of the stone age were on next and they were amazing, foo fighters headlined and they were pretty damn epic)

Primus did him a little tribute last night at their annual NYE show at the Oakland Fox Theater, up on the big screen with a couple other bassists that passed this year including Chris Squire and Louis Johnson.

Went out and picked up the final Motorhead album the other day... it's a pretty good album. Ol' Lemmy was rocking right until the day the sky came looking for him...
