It's formulaic but it's entertainment in small doses. Funny you mention Californication as I am also watching that one, think I just finished season 3. If you like one I think you'll like the other. As for Sopranos, I don't think I saw the last 2 seasons but I remember watching the first 3 or so on DVD and really enjoyed them. I wonder if they'd be a little dated now, not sure. Might as well get season 1 and see for yourself, I don't think it'll disappoint. I started to watch The Wire recently too (season 1) and it's alright. I got into the storyline, but overall I feel like it's too similar to network TV cop shows, but with bad words and more blood. The acting's no better.
