I do wish artists/labels would include a scan of the artwork/liner notes with downloads. It's not worth buying CDs again, but how much effort does it take to drag one more file into a folder?

this is the thing you don't get linear notes or additional artwork with digital unless they produce a digital booklet..

In theory most of this information should be within the meta data..but no one does that properly

I saw Stephan Mathieu rate this release with a 2 star out of 5 on discogs, 4 for the stuff and minus 2 coz of "the joke that is 24-bit version". Wonder what he meant (i prefer listening to 128 mp3 since it was my peak days habit and i never move on)

After reading the past few pages, I've determined that miim is Jev. But miim, if you're not Jev you and him (her) should chat.

Mostly joking :) I agreed with a couple things you said miim.

Also, so no word on mastering? Is anyone else hearing the dullness of these recordings, or am I losing my mind? I'm loving a lot of the release, so I don't mean the tracks are dull but the actual sound of the tracks is very...gray. there's no brightness and the dynamics are weaker than much of their recent work...but very much like the AE_LIVE soundboards, they had that dull mush to them. Someone else has to be hearing this...

that's pretty weird of him. does he normally chime in on stuff like this on discogs?

I don't know shit about mastering, but to me this has been their sound palette since Exai. Including the live stuff.

yeah, this has some of my favorite mastering in an autechre album in a while. I went back to a few exai tracks and it doesn't sound nearly as "alive" and powerful as elseq, also this album is full of bright sounds and feelings

Rarely, but he did comment on poor vinyl pressings, once with a -2 too (Metal Machine Music).

He's kinda renowned specialist, innit? From his site:

I’m a collector of 78rpm records from the 1910s and 20s, the era of acoustic and early electronic audio recording. I love the way they transport sound.

Another question is: is he even credible with a 4?

Ok so elseq 3. It's growing on me a bit. Or maybe I am just getting used to it. Not sure yet. But I've been listening to it for the past few days.

The length of "eastre" doesn't bother me as much anymore because I know what to expect now. "eastre" definitely sound really amazing with all of its different sound and subtlety coming together to create something where it can be really difficult to parse all the sounds in the track. I love it when Autechre can accomplish that. And the chords and drones really are great here. The rest of the ambient sound effects are really cool and creepy. I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about the twenty minutes, but I do know that it's a lot easier for me to sit down and listen to it now, and I find it mostly enjoyable.

"TBM2" I thought was the weakest track here when I first heard it. I still probably find that to be true, but I definitely do like it a whole lot more. Although it is still very simple for an Autechre track, there is a great amount of subtlety. It is constantly changing a little bit all the time. And I do have to admit those heavy kicks do sound really cool and can be mesmerizing.

"mesh cinereaL" ... I never had a problem with. Great track and really relentless.

considering he sells his own stuff in 24 bit as well it's probably not about the "humans can't tell difference anyway" thing. anyhow i don't quite get the point, it's like "wagner yeah, 5 points for the music, -3 because he's an antisemite."

5 eps != 1 lp, imo. a proper followup to exai would have more promotion behind it, and probably a physical release.

mesh cinereal is cool.

Yup

if this turns out being like quadrange in relation to quaristice the corresponding album will probably be able to cure cancer.

Your example isn't really comparable, discogs is the place for finding out about cut quality as much as about music. Sure there could be a Holocaust music lovers site, where they rate nazi loyalty level. Needless to say, rating habits are differ, some are giving 1-stars to the best stuff and don't give much of a fuck, at least Mathieu left a note.

So what's wrong with 24-bit version then? Any non-humans?

oh, i wasn't fully aware of that, but makes sense since it's also a marketplace. i apologize, was an insensitive analogy to begin with.

"4 stars but my dog's not feeling the 24 bits: -2"
