Massive disappointments from artists you love

oh god yes, Rustie has always been dangerously close to trap mediocrity (holy shit, I am gonna be so damn happy when everyone realises how shitty trap is), but I thought Glass Swords was a step towards him getting a bit more proggy.. clearly I was wrong

Hudson Mohawke and Rustie after their first albums.

Agreed. So talented, so underwhelming lately.

I'm not a fan of Rustie, but I quite enjoyed Green Language, and EVENIFUDONTBELIEVE has its moments too.

But yeah, HudMo...I did not even listen to Lantern in its entirety. Wasn't expecting Butter 2 of course but the few tracks I listened were awful.

Flying Lotus.

Cosmogramma and UTQC were amazing IMO. "You're Dead" is (I think?) the first album by an artist I appreciate that I stopped halfway through. One of the biggest let downs as a listener I've ever experienced.

It was (and still is) one of the worst albums I've heard, makes it so much worse it's by someone I held in high regard.

Honestly, a fucking snoop dog cameo? A kendrick lamar cameo?

wat.the.fuck.

Might as well throw in a limp bizkit and nickelback cameo.

@beerwolf: Dunno. PJ was a big thing for me back in the days. Perhaps it was poor all the way. Perhaps I just grew up.

@goDel: I just gave up after Knowle West Boy. I've noticed that he has released four or five albums after that, but they always get poor to lukewarm reviews and a low RYM-score, so I haven't bothered.

And I forgot one of the biggest dissappointment. Goldie! Saturnzreturn! What a pile of shit.

Yeah, I liked some tracks from now albums too, wasn't that bad. Hud Mo also has released some good stuff, I like Chimes and Satin Panthers EP, but Lantern wasn't any good.

Overall it seems like they don't dedicate as much time as before to compose and make a great album. Maybe now they care more about their gigs / collaborations, such as ANOHNI, etc... Hope one day we have proper albums from them again.

I get you dislike the album, but your analogy makes no sense.  Why is a collab with Kendrick Lamar or Snoop Dogg so surprising? More importantly, why is this on par with him collaborating with Limp Bizkit or Nickelback?  Shit makes no sense, dawg.

Until The Quiet Comes was so forgettable and bland, especially after Cosmogramma, which was definitely Fly Lo's peak. You're Dead was much better, but I haven't returned to it much after after a few listens.

This. I wouldn't mind hearing Snoop Dogg on more guest spots, I like the way he sounds regardless of what he's rapping about. Kind of like MF Doom in that regard.

Doom could probably make a sequel to Madvillainy where he raps about himself sprinkling Klonopin in his salad to lose weight faster in every song and I'd still probably listen to it.

Yeah. It was disappointing. There were a few AMAZING tracks though, like Coronus, the Terminator. Though when I look through the tracklist, there's not nearly as many good tracks as previous albums.

I think they're in a similar spot with Machinedrum... Too image concerned to make good music. If you watch the HudMo RBMA you can tell he is really self conscious about his older stuff (such as Ooops!) and kind of denounces that sound and that it is tied to idm etc. "I just wanted to make hip hop beats" essentially. Probably doesn't help that HudMo specifically is in the sight of Kanye, big label reps, etc.

But yeah, the old stuff is SO good

So many spot ons in this thread to agree with but 2 I'll add -

Diplo - out of nowhere got his demo picked up by Ninja Tune and dropped a great album in Florida, a moody/dubby/ravey post-Mezzanine soundtrack for tripping balls in the everglades.  Everything since then has sucked hard and now he's a superstar dj pimping cellphones, getting into twitter beefs, and bumping elbows with skillrex

Prefuse 73 - Man his early albums were great but the quality faded hard after Extinguisher and Surrounded by Silence.  Ampexian was a fleeting return to form but most of his other stuff has been meh at best.  Only She Chapters and Diamond Watch Wrists are close to unlistenable and are probably why he's not on warp anymore.

Perhaps I'm wrong and your right! I keep meaning to dig out that Mirror Ball album they did with Neil Young.....what did you think of that? I can remember being a bit disappointed, as I thought that had potential to be something great.

For all the types of music i like everyone disappoints me at some point, except a handful of artists that i have wired my brain to automatically like anything that they produce. aphex, mike p, vsnares and boards of canada are the only people that will always be good.

You might want to bother about False Idols. Don't bother about the others, as far as I can tell.

I just took a dirty bowl out of the sink, drained my pasta, then mindlessly dumped the pasta into the dirty bowl. I'd make more, but that was the last of it, and it's 2am...

It's funny how many primitive buttons this pushes:

      - wasted time
      - wasted money
      - wasted food
      - expectations of a delicious meal shattered
      - it's your own fault
      - and you're still hungry...

In reality, it's not a big deal, I can just go to the store or order a Pizza, but millions of years of evolution / survival instinct kick in to make you feel like shit. Nature's way of saying "hey, food is scarce, and hunting is hard, you should avoid fucking this up in the future".

You get a mini version of this whenever you drop the last delicious spoonful of ice cream down the front of your shirt instead of into your waiting mouth. It's always the last spoonful, isn't it? You know it's gonna be so good... you over-anticipate -- a brief moment of lapsed concentration -- and suddenly the spoon tilts just a bit too much, you bite metal, and that last ice cream covered chocolate brownie chunk rolls onto the floor. So disappointing...
