I have to thank What.CD for the bitching about how 99% quality rips aren't good enough and for the hours spent grabbing all of the obscure classical music CDs at the library to keep my ratio at a safe level.

Seriously though, it's pretty sad to see it go. With the library nearly the size of the Seek and the rips cleaner then buying the CD or record itself, I'll miss it but just like the site it replaced it'll spring back up soon.

I still use soulseek for most stuff, there are plenty of autistic collectors yet to give up on it.

What are you dudes using these days besides what.cd?

I got invited there once from a Discogs user because I have some rare stuff in my collection but never ended up checking it out. What was it exactly?

thread probs gonna get shut down for this sort of chat but slsk is still the best thing out there. it's a real treasure and it would be a shame for it to get fucked with. surely it's possible to create a file sharing service without any centralised servers that could be easily shut down, or does all data between two computers always need to pass through a server?

Damn, reading about it now. It sounded awesome. Hopefully something else will appear to fill the niche.

What.cd shutting down is like the burning of the library of Alexandria. They had some rare shit, expertly curated. Had a decent buffer also thanks to uploading some bounty. Waffles is dead too.

You asked "all data ... always" which isn't probably true of -any- P2P service.

Now, is it possible to have a P2P service completely -without- a centralized server? Well, how would the client computers find each other?

You'd think something must have happened to raise their profile considering how long the site had been "allowed" to exist, wonder if it has anything to do with the relatively recent trend of hacking/exploiting digital download stores.

a real shame, I rarely struggled to find anything I needed on there and there was some stuff archived you would never find a physical copy of, but I'm not surprised it got slammed

great news, hopefully people will migrate to soulseek/ruracker or other open platforms, the wcd ratio rules coupled with its seedbox proliferation among users became unbearable for people with slower connections.
