Black Mirror is hitting Japan hard.

edit:

only a matter of time until this comes w/add ons and hacks and instead of sharing a cup of tea on the couch there's some porn type thing and then it reminds you to make sure the box of tissues or dirty tube sock or whatever preference you set.. is near by.

or you swipe the screen and it jumps from the jar to your flatscreen or VR headset and blow up doll/flesh light thing..

but maybe that's the american version

japan is very different.

i read something earlier this year about how it's quite common for young japanese women to not be interested in dating or sex.. apparently it's quite popular right now in certain parts of the population.. just not interested in relationships and sex.

also, things like waifu in a jar look like ways to keep up spirits of lonely young professionals so they keep coming to work

It's not just the women, men too. But their numbers aren't that far off the rest of the "developed" world.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_world_/2013/10/23/are_japanese_people_really_having_less_sex_than_anyone_else.html

And there are plenty of Japanese men and women still very interested in sex.

This device will surely drive otaku to become more introverted though, and won't do any wonders for their ability to interact with real people. Any bets on a male version coming to the west before Japan?

I give him 6 days before he drills a hole into the front.

But if it's filled with liquid like those Magic 8 Balls from the '90s then that hole's gonna go dry in seconds

I believe it. The younger population might be some of the most celibate in the world. From my time there though I still think it's a mixed bag. The university students seemed more stoic, whereas the broads who liked to bar-hop or go clubbin' hoping to meet foreigners were...you get the idea. Personally I was more drawn to the former just because they weren't sleazy and were better cultivated.

Seems like Jar Waifu would get tiresome after a while though, come to think of it. I'd rather have my phone alarm wake me up than some high-pitched Navi voice every morning before work.

yeah.. obviously people are gonna get it on and seek companionship and date and all that... the piece i read made it sound almost like it was a trending thing.  it was so long ago i read it.. probably read a few things like it.. generally sounded like some people were just opting out, possibly temporarily.

if it's a thing i read on line about culture in another country then i take w/a grain of salt because it's just gonna be a slice of a larger picture of a moment.

it'll be interesting to see how countries with closed borders get along as time passes.  japan is getting older. people have fewer kids, later in life.. perhaps it'll be just fine since automation will take over jobs that a younger workforce may traditionally fill.. and they'll have a smaller population to deal with? maybe.. we'll see.

in the states with immigration we have a lot of young people so it bolsters the workforce going forward or so some people say.

personally.. waifu in a jar in the states i'd expect would be for a different age demographic than in japan and it would have to be tweaked some.  the marketing people would have a field day.

Yeah i know the piece you're referring to. It was in the guardian in 2013, can't remember the author - it was a woman though. It was very much a snapshot, and if i recall it did actually address some of the structural issues with Japanese society (which are still plentiful).

Japan is going to have serious demographic problems very soon, and even though the automation there is freaking amazing, the country will take a beating through depressed domestic demand. There's so much competition globally now, Japanese firms are struggling, and the GDP will continue to be stagnant.

Anyways, i digress, sorry everyone.

You don't think the 20 year olds in buttfuck nowhere America would buy the shit out of that?

i think a lot of people would buy it but it would have to be sort of like amazon's alexis in a way and get regular updates and have all kinds of 'options' and customizations etc because fuck if a dude with neon lights on his lowered car isn't gonna want to set himself 'apart' from the masses with a custom accent or slang script.

if people can teach them to know their whims and have the thing adapt and learn then people will invest time in teach them and making them 'unique' over time.

*digression appreciated though.

Oh I'm sure customization will be very available. Japanese do love customizing the shit out of that sort of shit.

Now let's wait for the analog vs. digital waifu debate…

Well digital ones will never bitch at you for years on end while lying to you and cheating on you.

Of course they don't have vajayjay, can't exhibit real intimacy (and no, I'm not talking about fucking), can't cook something special for you as a surprise when you've had a shitty week at work, can't share with the sheer joy (and terror lol) of raising children. But yeah, i guess you can take the batteries out. Score one for the digital my saracen bro!

They also nailed the design for their demographic. It looks just like any ugly Alienware, Razer or whatever nerdy black glossy plastic and neon-galore computer hardware.

It was co-designed by the bass player from the Black-Eyed Peas
