UN-timely bump, but

I recently heard someone mention Clocolan, and while I haven't committed to listening to the whole of the Nothing to Abandon LP, the parts I've listened to have some very similar chord transitions and effects to BoC.

Clocolan is one of the best there's ever been in this subgenre. This track 'The Most Vivid Shade Of Green' really nails the aesthetic on Geogaddi, while still being worthwhile in and of itself, better than practically any other track I've heard:

I feel like there's this delusion that many 'BoClone' artists hold stock in with regard to what BoC's music is really about. It's not enough to have a two-chord squarewave + tons of automation (with a noodly lead overtop), a 4-bar drum pattern, and a playground sample with some delay & phaser. Not gonna name any names but loads of artists seem to have taken rudiments of BoC's aesthetic and just run with it without really grasping the whole. BoC hold an absolute vigil over every detail of their work, both musical and extramusical & that's what really sets them apart. The melody on Chromakey Dreamcoat, for instance, is a simple progression but listen on quality 'phones and it's actually this vast panoply of disparate sounds - birds, whispers, synths, guitars, water... The mixing job is astounding! I see some artists attempting to incorporate numerology and/or occultism into their work in a similar way but it's usually on the nose by comparison. The number of extramusical 'easter eggs' uncovered in Geogaddi & the attendant esotericism regarding the manner in which they were implemented is proof enough that BoC are absolutely uncompromising, say what you will about the quality of their music.

I just don't hear/see that level of polish with a lot of artists that would cite BoC as their principal influence.

Are you looking for BoC to be copied exactly to the T with precisely the same production values, soundscapes, incidentals and feel, or just good/new/other music to listen to? It seems to me that a lot of the time music that gets compared to BoC (et al) gets a bum rap because it doesn't add up to the preconceived perfection of the primary source material - the comparison is usually characterized only via how the comparable doesn't pass muster, doesn't come close to BoC, is a pitiful attempt at copying, doesn't even work as a tribute. Nothing compares to BoC, Autechre, Plaid, RDJ, Bola, B12 or anyone else who we hyper-appreciate, but that shouldn't become a base for the implicit or explicit negativity that prevails. Most of everything is a copy of a copy of a copy, but it's not impossible to enjoy something that's alike X without it being X or as X as possible.

Anchoring is where some piece of initial information is used to judge everything after the fact - if I present you with two tracks you haven't heard before and tell you that one is Autechre and the other is a tribute or pastiche - if you're hyper-appreciative of Autechre there is a very high probability that you'll like the one that's said to be Autechre better - regardless of whether the track is actually Autechre or not. When listening to something that's characterized as being like BoC, there's good probability that a (reverse) confirmation bias tells you (in advance) that no, this is not BoC, you won't like it.

Personally, I've had to do a lot of mental gymnastics to get rid of that baggage and be appreciative rather than judgemental.

This is one of my favorite record labels and nobody ever seems to talk about them. Most of their releases are super good and very BOC Inspired.
