Now That Trump's President... (not any more!)

holy shit I joked in one of these threads we need to build a wall to keep corona virus from getting us, and now the idiot tweeted something to the same effect:

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/10/cdc-director-border-wall-coronavirus-125007

Quote

On Tuesday morning, Trump claimed that his campaign trail pledge of a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border would also aid in containing the coronavirus, writing on Twitter that the structure is “Going up fast” and adding: “We need the Wall more than ever!”

Quote

Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Tuesday that he was unaware of any indication from his agency that physical barriers along America’s borders would help halt the spread of the coronavirus in the U.S. — contradicting an assertion President Donald Trump made earlier in the day.

Appearing before House lawmakers to testify about the public health crisis and the White House’s budget request for his agency, Redfield was asked by Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) if the CDC’s recommendations for combating the coronavirus addressed whether “structural barriers” at the borders “would be of any use in mitigating” the growing outbreak.

“Not that I’ve seen,” Redfield replied.

good thinking donnie...the wall will save us...all hail the wall...in wall we trust...

oof. nicely said.

https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/03/trump-speech-coronavirus-travel-ban-europe.html

Quote

His primary public health gesture was the announcement of a travel ban from Europe. The explanation for this measure was terrifyingly ignorant. “We have seen fewer cases of the virus than are now present in Europe,” he boasted. This may not even be true. (It is possible that the U.S. only knowsabout fewer cases because of its atrocious testing regime.) Even if true, it would be irrelevant. The dynamic of the virus is that it spreads through populations. Starting at a lower level only means your caseload peaks a few days later.

Yet Trump seems to have absorbed the notion that Europe’s higher level of known cases means Europe is dirty and we are clean, and we can win by keeping Europeans away. The fact that the virus has already taken hold across the country, and that blocking foreign travel does essentially nothing to slow the spread of the disease, is beyond his grasp. He is closing the barn door after the horses have escaped. Yet even that simple metaphor captures a complexity that escapes him.

‘It’s a nasty question’: Trump lashes out at reporter who asks about disbanded pandemic group

https://www.alternet.org/2020/03/its-a-nasty-question-trump-lashes-out-at-reporter-who-asks-about-disbanded-pandemic-group/

“It’s your administration,” Alcindor pointed out.

“It’s my administration,” he responded. “You say we did that, I don’t know anything about it.”

“You don’t know about the reorganization at the National Security Council?” she asked.

“It’s the administration, perhaps they do that, you know?” he said.

nyc is about to catch fire with covid. shutting things down will help but we're only starting to decelerate the spread. we may surpass china.

china seems to be getting it under control but they did that with draconian measures. south korea deployed an impressive response from the start and just barely are getting the spread under control.

the shit spreads easily. social distancing is what people should be doing. and know that it incubates and transmits before symptoms appear. we are about to see some shit. it's confounding watching trump's slow-motion fumble on this. what the fuck.

trump seems to think the virus will behave differently here.  as if we aren't going to see the same things happen that every other country has seen.he thinks that by  not admitting that it's  going to suck and get bad in some places with hospitals being overrun and spikes in deaths etc that it'll somehow be nice to america and "blow over"

it's really nuts and describing it as a slow motion fumble is accurate. he's only concerned about his appearance and how this reflects on him and the stock market. sadly this is going to be just another in a long line of bad business mistakes for our idiot in charge.

and in the middle of all this shitty republicans in congress are sticking anti-abortion amendments in bills aimed at provided relief and support  to people. truly shameless cunts.

it might wake up a few people but not gonna be a big sea change. countless opportunities for people to wake up have come and gone since 2016.

if anything, more people might realize how much it sucks not to have paid sick leave and stuff like that. \

i think it’ll be sort of calm for a while with people being helpful and nice but at some point if this lingers on there’s potential for the distrust and paranoia to kick in in some places and then people get real dumb and start shooting each other over toilet paper.  but i digress.

No, it will wake people up. Imagine the US in two weeks time being where Italy is at this moment. This shit will be undeniable. This is a lifechanging event.

Same holds for Europe, btw. Although I suspect US society is less prepared to deal with a crisis like this. (Eg. No paid leave, weak central government) Could be wrong, but the only options the federal government seems to have are military related and perhaps to pump some money in the economy (most of which aimed at the stock market).

They definitely have more options than that. Whether they choose to use them is a different story.
They’ve already pumped a bunch of money into the economy (lowered interest rates, $1.5T cash injection, and QE). The real issue is gonna hit when supply lines get totally fucked.

Also, the odds of a military coup in the US.... o dear. No, it won't go there. But what if...

Seven Days in May ain't but a couple weeks away. Got the ample existential threat and a far crappier President/broken system to sell as well.
