I tried a few at Synthfest in UK last year and the less than £1k were real nice but then the +£1k ones were insane. Can't for the life of me think what the brand were. If I had silly money i'd get those.

I'm happy enough with my focal spirit's for now though.

its an interesting sentiment from some people that i shouldnt spend a few weeks wages on nice headphones, on a forum full of people who adore and create interesting electronic music.

i dont follow your logic that £1000 headphones are the equivilant of £10,000 monitors.

i did get a few new brands i wouldnt have thought to check though, the fostex look interesting. ive never tried a set of beyerdynamic headphones either.

This is an interesting idea and one I'm totally up for getting into. The idea that essentially electronic musicians are inevitably going to be down with spending money on stuff....the excuse being that it's in the name of creativity so is justified....obviously your choice has nothing to do with me and u r free to do whatever....I've always assumed naively that this type of music was partially based on a punkish leaning. It's countercultural beginnings and alternative nature just seemed to fit with this direction but I know I'm wrong and commercialism and capitalism are totally embedded within the gear tech scene....I'm also interested in the parts of the culture that are diy and positioned against the idea that u need a lot to make amazing stuff....demo scene or diy noise subcultures for example....I've spent a shit load of money on music gear over the years and now use basically nothing to make music in comparison to those whose studio pictures u see on music sites....I have some nice eve audio monitors, a good laptop and some sennheiser 650s that are awesome despite my having dropped them a million times....I dunno...just thoughts....no criticism or anything....

part of the reason i like to spend 50 percent of my income on this sort of stuff is that i view materialistic spending as not a waste, as if its looked after it retains 75 percent of its value, same as my mortgage. the amount of money ive blasted on completely consumable items and also a decade of rent.

also, i like money. always have. probably always will. there is no feeling worse in life for me than being skint.

another point i would make is, headphones are a different kettle of fish to music creation tools, synths and whatnot i would say. i love my modular, and its invigorated my desire to make tunes like nothing ive ever experienced, but i understand with serious skill and practice you could be making the same sounds i make with it in reaktor. but expensive headphones and speakers just sound nicer. its undeniable. and therefore they inevitably increase your personal enjoyment of music.

Don't know if I trust this software. Bizarre idea.

i've tried it. it works

Yea I had a go. Loaded the most expensive cans in the software and....just feels weird to be mixing into something that isn't what my headphones are actually doing....probably good for prep for gigs I guess

the best way of using plugs like this is just for neutralizing non-flat frequency curve of the headphones you have.

They should have a preset for the white apple ones.....id love to hear that

why? if im spending 5 hours a day listening to music on headphones, why would buying excellent ones be a bad idea. and i have loads of money for whatever i want because i have a 25 grand a year job in a city with living costs of 5000 a year, no kids, and no real debt.

Where the fuck do you live that you're spending 5K a year on living costs? If it's your parent's basement then I understand, otherwise, how the hell?

Also, have you not considered maybe moving to a place that allows you to blast your music as loud as you want without neighbors who take issue with it? Just a thought.

But I've got no actual contribution to the real discussion here. I've got a pair of Sennheiser 550's (I think, they're in a box right now) and they've done me well. More than an hour at a time gets uncomfortable though, but my thinking is I really shouldn't be listening via headphones for more than about an hour anyway.

If that's all too personal just ignore my questions nbd. :)

and ive organised a mortgage to start in september when my lease runs out, but i havent picked the place based on the neighbours, but on price, room size, location and closeness to nice food shops. no idea what the neighbours will be like there. ive got a studio 10 minutes away with an infinite volume limit, but i really like getting a few beers and making music from the hours of 1-5am after i get back from work.

i also want my mortgage paid off in 6 years so im gonna be paying more like 600 in rent from september, so im enjoying splashing out to fuck while i can.

Damn, that ain't bad at all. It ain't like that anywhere where I am, and I'm in an area of a state with some of the best cost of living in the US, anywhere decent/safe to rent is easily $500/month, generally not including utilities/etc. Good on you. Buy some nice headphones.

the value of money is a weird one aswell, was it not about 60p on the dollar 8-10 years ago? now its 80p.

also, glasgow is cheap in the right areas. the studentified west end you will be paying £450 rent £120 council tax.i prefer to live in largely asian community areas. much cheaper, and the food shops are more interesting and much cheaper.

no idea how people live in london. i have friends paying 700 quid each for rooms they share as couples. absolutely ridiculous.

by all means, spend as much on yer headphones as you want. if you want my opinion though, 1000 bucks/pounds is a buttload of money for some snake-oil. i'd spend that kind of money on other stuff.

Thing is, headphones, monitors, interface etc are all pretty boring purchases so it's hard to justify spending lots of money on something you probably alreay have even if they are cheap. With these sorts of things it's hard to give and take advice as most people only have experience of gear at the level they can afford and most would swear or recommend what they have is really good but while never experiencing any higher levels of quality. There is a big difference in low quality gear and more expensive, decent quality but when you start spending big money the difference in high end audio the gap in quality is narrower and quite subjective in what you hear. You can follow the numbers and buy on specs but that does not always transfer into quality.

If I was in the market for new phones or monitors I'd find an outlet and try as many as possible and over some time. also take notes while listening.

i can understand that quality could cost more. but to me, high end is mostly snake-oil. 1000pounds headphones would be a high-end range for my taste. if messi wants to buy those, good for him though. but for that money, i'd expect at least a day of listening tests at some specialised shop. with free coffee and cake.

It is to a degree when you get really high end. That stuff is for people who want to be seen to be spending that money rather than having the best listening experience. Moreso consumer audio than professional. Not always though, price can be purely because of the man hours, effort, engineering, materials and development and if it's a small company then that is all amplified even if the audio quality is no higher than other equipment in lower price ranges.

Toneboosters have recently released Morphit (it's a cheaper rival to that Sonarworks plugin) with an Apple Earbuds profile - http://www.toneboosters.com/tb-morphit/
