Music scene in and around Leicester?

Auditor

Recommended Posts

So, I might be about to become an expat. My SO is probably getting an internship in Melton Mowbray (looks quite dull, who knows), and if she gets the job we are moving all the way from Florida.

Some preliminary googling shows that the closest urban center is Leicester. Any Englishfolk from around the way care to fill me in on what the music scene is like? Where to go, what to do?

Cheers

De Montfort University in the middle of Leicester has got a real good Music Tech course (went for a bit but had to drop out as my halls of residence was over an hour away and was in the process of being condemned!) ... so there might be nights they perform somewhere 'round town

Yeah, sounds like it's not too different from where I live except more rural.

its chilled, with a mix of architectures, mint curry gaffs....but more significantly Nottingham is just up the M1 & theres always plenty going on there,

just take a stab-vest/flak-jacket.......

Nottingham is the gateway to the North and most weekends there are still a stack of options (even if it isnt the early 90's peak-era acid house free party mania), check Leftlion

and you have to eat @ Sat Bains, fuck the Jerusalem Inn right off (full of tourists)

Notts bias, but go to one of the Notts Forest v Derby games, seething hatred and chaos as feisty as any other rivalry, even Leicester cant match that with their Baby Squad goons (firms have specific pubs in Leicester to avoid like the plague)

finally the Peak District is just oop road too, try walking Mam Tor all Julian Cope liiiiiike,

you're 90mins from London & places like Manchester are do-able for missions & Northamptonshire is 1 of Britain's often past over jewels for rural chilling, just avoid Corby

leicester is one of the midlands cities with a pretty healthy music scene - i still go to some shows there every now and again, and have done for 25 years or so to varying degrees, as it's part of the gig circuit. a fair few independent record shops too, at one time or another. quite a young crowd, due to the university. it has been more vibrant in the past than i think it is now, but you might find that it's on the up when you arrive - in essence, it always has the potential ... but you might find it's not that vibrant during your time there.

saw many a great band here in the early 90's > https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Charlotte

I'm fairly local and damn, can't think of a more grim City to move to ha! Melton is fine though, just not much happening.

Was surprised that Snares played in leicester last year.

Ha, I nearly put apart from Stoke.

Yes, there are worse, much worse but Florida to Leicester does sound ridiculous.

Maybe us localish dudes can make a scene if there isn't one?

i think there's a pretty healthy music scene in leicester itself, with quite a few electronic/drum & bass/techno nights. outside the city itself there's the free party scene plus a number of legal organised outdoor events... in the smaller leicestershire towns i guess not loads on but it's easy enough to get into leicester, or go a little further afield to nottingham or birmingham where there's obviously huge music scenes. london ain't exactly a million miles away either - 57 mins on the fast train from where i am.

also melton mowbray is a lovely place!

I'm game, once I move there!

Also, I don't know if you read the news, but Florida is kind of batshit insane in all the wrong ways. Other than the weather, I am ready to LEAVE

One of the things I'm most excited for is being able to travel around Europe and even farther for far less than it costs to travel anywhere out of America.

Yeah, Notts is great, 20-30 minutes up the road so easy to access.

Leicester is pretty much just an average city. Doesn't have much to recommend it over places like Leeds and Manchester, but it's not especially grim either (especially given that it's down the road from Coventry). I live 15 minutes away on the train so I mostly know it as a shopping / eating out place (the last train home is at 10.40 so nights out are a no-go usually). It used to have a bunch of great record shops but they've all gone in the last ten or so years, now there's a tiny HMV and a mostly indie/punk focused independent. I'm not sure if it's still going, but there used to be a 'bring your own gear' electronic jam night somewhere in the city. More on the experimental end of things rather than techno/IDM stuff I think, but intriguing enough.

Melton you won't find much in terms of stuff happening, it's a fairly bog standard town really, but the whole county's reasonably cheap so you should find a nice enough place to live there.

Leicester has some older sound systems that still wheel out their rigs on bank-holidays etc from time to time, Babble Sound System being the ace in the pack, safe as fuck crowds & its always been funny (in a good way) when foreigners stumble in on said soirees & cant quite believe what they're seeing/experiencing

http://www.babble.org.uk/

BWPT Sound System are far heavier/techno/ketamine orientated, deffo more crusty/dog on a string brigade, but the lads who do their live sets know their shit (ie: Je5):

https://www.google.co.uk/#safe=off&q=bwpt+sound+system

not to flog the Notts horse to death, but DiY, one of Britain's finest ever sound systems, still have/has links to the area and host regular nights around the region, check their facefuck page etc for whats on

https://www.google.co.uk/#safe=off&q=diy+sound+system+nottingham

Charles Webster, a pillar of British electronic music, still plays out locally:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?safe=off&q=Martin+Iveson&stick=H4sIAAAAAAAAAONgFuLSz9U3MCwpKk4rUAKzjSoMjArLtIR9S4szkx2LSjKLS4IzU1LLEyuLAaJW6m4vAAAA&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj9p4ei17jTAhXpD8AKHQsNBagQxA0IuAEwFQ&biw=1366&bih=634#safe=off&q=charles+webster

Derby is home to Atjazz/Martin Iveson, a bloke with an incredible musical pedigree, a must if he's playing out locally:

last but not least, you GOTTA learn the standard regional greeting of "Eh oop me duck" (duck being an old Danelaw/Norse/Viking association for "little doll" or "whore")

I feel properly prepared and am now stoked for if this move happens. So, phonetically I'm guessing "Eh oop" is the equivalent of "What's up?"

Also, just found out that if we move it won't be Melton proper, but somewhere called Waltham on the Wolds...
