Any hints or tips where to start with emulating this sound in Ableton? And-  if it's not too much to ask* - a little bit of background knowledge would be sweet.....i've never really had to put a name to this sound until this post, but to me it would be a kind standard acid lead with delay on it? Where would I find some early instances of it, and how would it have been initially achieved? 303 with glide on the pitch, and delay?

Any help much appreciated :)

Any monophonic subtractive synth that lets you route a square or sawtooth wave (or a mix of both) oscillator into a 18dB/octave or 24dB/oct. LPF (with nice amount of resonance) and pitch glide could indeed do the trick here. Add some delay from the get go when you patch your synth et voilà.

Remember that the less you drive the LPF, the more headroom it has to sing. Don't neglect the MIDI sequence, the way notes overlap etc... And of course, sets the enveloppes to taste.

It could indeed be a 303 (or a 101/202) but I'd say that the delay is at least as crucial here as the synth itself.
