enjoying art from an artist who is less than savory

Richard Wagner is another good example. He made some of the most significant music of his time but was an obsessive antisemite

Yeah he's a good example. Roald Dahl had some anti-Semitic quips in the past. Mel Gibson has some pretty nasty warped right-wing views. H. P. Lovecraft was bigoted as fuck.

humans != art.

that's all there is to it imo. art has no brain. if you really only want to support perfectly clean personalities you might just as well give up completely cos everyone is a bit shit sometimes, non?

he made up a lot of shit in the non fiction. i still like some of the essays but they need to be read as fiction because that's what they are. when i say a fraud i mean he was originally a philosophy student and i think he brought that to his writing in a way that reflects negatively on his work now, to me. i believe, and this is supported in the bios on him, that he got into writing fiction because it would get him laid and because he wanted adulation from strangers and was deeply insecure and wanted to be praised as a genius, all of which happened. he also idolized people like gaddis and pynchon and delillo and looked down on eighties minimalists like bret easton ellis, who funnily enough was exploring the same themes in an equally facile and surface way, just in a different style. i think he was a narcissist and a lot of his pining on with jonathan franzen about how the point of literature is to make you feel less alone was fraudulent. he was a competitive guy and he brought that to literature and i think the pale king was a dead end for him because he realized he couldn't really write fiction anymore. if he had somehow broken through that and ditched it and became an essayist i think that would have been the best outcome for him, but whatever. it was a major loss that he's gone but i don't think a lot of people who set out to read him really understand the context of his work or his character and honestly i have been to so many apartments with an unread copy of infinite jest sitting on a shelf next to gravity's rainbow that i can't really take any of it seriously anymore.

i tried to read gravity's rainbow a few times.. jesus what a nightmare structure. every page has dyslexic syphilis or something.

DFW was into formal logic i think. that was his philosophic area of study which is basically a kind of math right? i don't know.. none of that is anywhere near my wheelhouse. i don't think he could escape himself. franzen said DFW was eventually just writing to not be bored and then they switched his meds and the new meds didn't work so they put him back on the old meds and those didn't work anymore either so he hung himself in the kitchen.

Good Smiths stuff is really good. Never heard a good Morrissey solo though.

edit: anyway, is the thread just going to be people mentioning unsavory artists now? Pretty boring/useless if so.

seth putnam nazi man but scream well.

Was he though, or would he just claim to be that because most people would find it shocking and upsetting?  Same with that Boyd Rice guy.

is Necro like a shitty person irl or is it just an act/stage persona. Either way he still annoys me though. SAT word rap. "You're a pissant", words people never say in real life

Edit: same questions about Passenger of Shit. If you take the stories at face value he like performs naked and wanks on stage or something

has anyone here actually turned off a song or film because it was just so goddamn wrong? I guess this is an inverted question: less than savory art from "ok" people

for example I could never fucking watch Hostel, sleazy lazy torture porn and the fact that it had mainstream success bothers me

I almost turned this off it was so fucked but I do like UGK otherwise, more of a "jeeeeeesus christ guys whaddafuck"

it's essentially the room: the musical, so yes. maybe it's ok to ironically enjoy something that sucks and not have to feel like you're separating the art from the artist when you're watching it to make fun of how bad the artist is.

r kelly has a fkn great voice though i will give him that. also he seems to have magically grown his hair back after being bald in the 90s. i wonder how that happened :whistling:

12 play, chocolate factory and loveland are extremely good.

^ how can you not love this. his phrasing is so excellent. the remix is also flawless.

everyone makes fun of trapped in the closet but that's part of his insanity, like calling his album 12 play instead of 4 play. or.. foreplay
