WORLD CUP FEVER

don’t understand what shearer and the lot were on about. Those are called as penalties all day everyday in the prem. first part of his body to touch the ball was the hand. Easy decision. free kick was soft but people are only complaining because it resulted in a goal.

Yeah first free kick was a penalty from behind and there was contact, this was early in the game too mind you and refs have to call anything like that immediately to set the tone. it was an exaggerated fall but the call was not unreasonable. Same with the VAR call - it was handling - arms out well beyond the body that deflected the ball. Doesn't have to be a blatant goal denial.

It was a great game overall, bit bummed Croatia didn't win out because they've been such great clutch players but overall this was on of the more entertaining finals in World Cup history - no anticlimactic PK shootouts, great performances, fair and clean playing, and some weird moments to boot: Pussy Riot on the field, that weird 2nd goal, seeing everyone rained on during the cup awarding.

only an easy decision for people who don't know the rules of the game, I'll forgive you, being an american.

nope and nope.

first no contact in the foul, he's already going down before the Croatian's foot hits him.

second, it has to be a deliberate handball, his arm motion was totally what you'd expect for someone jumping up in the air. also, he's not even applying the VAR ruling correctly either, it has to be "clear and obvious", and the number of times he had to watch it, and the fact that he was walking away and decided to go back and watch it a final time demonstrates it wasn't at all clear and obvious to him.

TBH I'm increasingly on the fence about the calls, fair point.

Kind of wished I was still refereeing. Did it for local adult games and youth leagues for years and there were always plenty of older refs who had pretty good insight on things like this.

Griezmann free kick was soft, but they get given. Problem here is Mandzukic just can't stop scoring.

Yes when you jump you put your arms up and bring them down to generate momentum. What you don't do is move them out to the side into the path of the ball, which is clearly what Perisic did. He even looks at his hand so he knows where his hand is.

100% a pen. Why the ref took so long is beyond me, his AR should have flagged it for him, never mind the VAR. Anyway it was easiest to tell on the slightly overhead angle.

Pogba with an amazing pass out to Mbappe and then a lovely left footed strike. Nothing Subasic could have done, he was recovering back to the centre of the goal after Pogba's first attempt, which is the correct approach to goal keeping, plus he was fairly unsighted on the actual pogboom.

Subasic really should have done better on Mbappe's goal, but you could tell he was still injured, couldn't push off his to his right. Hernandez' run to set that up for Mbappe was very good as well.

Also, Hugo LOLris, amirite?

Modric takes the Golden Ball, Kane takes the Boot, and France the World Cup. They should boycott the next one, disgraceful what's gone on (not that Russia is much better). Plus it'll be in the winter, completely fucking up league football.

Euro 2020 should be interesting, the Belgian team should be largely intact (minus Kompany I imagine, but Boyata is a more than serviceable replacement), France will be almost unchanged (although missing Giroud and Matuidi (both 31) and Kante will be 29) and Germany will surely be hungry to avenge their humiliation in this world cup. England will also retain the core of their team, but my god they need to improve their midfield. RLC certainly looks the best CM, they really need to find a holding midfielder who can pass (Henderson isn't it), and please for the love of god, no more starting Sterling.
