Sometimes I buy food for poor people hanging around outside grocery stores or what have you.

If they say they’re hungry, that’s usually what ends up happening, I rarely carry cash anymore.

poveryt persists because too much attention is being paid to other causes and issues instead of this one, which is the only one that can/should be talked about at once. also there is no better place to bring up the issue than the internet, and there is no better place on the internet than an idm forum.

So the only way I can see this will be fixed is through a total collapse of the eco system, society and the death of most of mankind. We're headed in the right direction guys!

^ excellent point. if cow farts are going to eventually destroy the world then what use is lifting people out of pobrety? we're doing them a favour by putting them out of the misery of existence early. idm autists of all people should be rationalists capable of understanding this dispassionate logic.

I give them money with the promise that they will only spend it on drugs. If they don't do drugs I demand a refund.

Reminds me of Will Self's article about getting treatment for his rare blood disease

On at least four of the 16 occasions between April and July that I went to Guy's for my venesections I was accosted outside the McDonald's on St Thomas Street by the same young man. He was well-spoken if shabbily dressed, and had the limp-scrape gait and the paradoxical features – at once sharply etched and poorly registered – of the street junky. Each time he asked me for change and each time I asked him if he had a drug problem. The first time he denied this I told him: "Sorry, I only give money to people who have a drug problem." So, predictably, he back-pedalled: "No, no, I do have an 'abit …" Addiction being such a great leveller, it planes away even the ability to detect irony. Then I zeroed in for the kill. "I'm sorry again, but I don't give money to liars." And he desperately rejoined: "I juss don't like to admit it straight up. Y'know what people are like …" Finally, I relented and gave him a pound coin or two, before subjecting him – in the time-honoured Sally Army way – to a homily in return for his handout.

All this give me your money schtick is embarrassing. You really thing that’s all it amounts to? You are so brainwashed.

A couple days ago I was walking to my vehicle and this guy came up to me, asked if I had some money he could have so he could buy a sub, gave some story about getting evicted, blah blah.  I thought it was mostly BS, and that his approach was way too aggressive in the first place.  He also tried to sell me hash...  Anyway, I panicked and was like "alright man, I'll see what I've got."  Gave him $2, to which his response was "ah come on man, don't you have $10?  I need to buy a sub!"  Then I just felt like an idiot for giving anything and rewarding that sort of obnoxious behaviour.  That's usually how my street charity pans out.

Not sure why I bothered writing that either, but I don't want it to have been a complete waste of time, so I'mma post it b/c fuck.

When people have asked me for money to buy food, I offer to take them and buy them food - anybody whose legitimately hungry will gladly accept. Those just wanting money for drink or drugs will turn you away.

The Only Thing, Historically, That's Curbed Inequality: Catastrophe
Plagues, revolutions, massive wars, collapsed states—these are what reliably reduce economic disparities.

is a way bigger problem than people generally think, and the modern left doesn't take it seriously enough (imho).. laying inequality at the feet of capitalism is so incredibly wrong that it isn't even worth discussing. the problem is way more serious and stems primarily from the inescapable pareto distribution (edit: added link)

edit2: and so what can be done about it? imo in society we need a proper mature discussion of the problem and conteplate "solutions" like redistribution, universal basic income etc and perfect them so that the solutions don't cause worse problems

personally? just ask urself what u can do about it around u.. if u r willing to act on it who knows how much a singular person could do..

Yeah that’s a good go-to line. “I don’t have cash, all I have is a card, but I’ll get you some food.”

One guy said “but you can get cash back!”

Good move, if you feel that way about it. Personally I couldn’t give a stuff if they spend it on drugs. Better they get money from begging than from robbing someone.

I love being rich and white . When I think of poor people it gives me the Heebie jeebies. Like , why don't those people

Just quit drugs , get a hotel for a few days , jump online and send off a couple CVs and get real jobs. They don't look after themselves either , why would you give them a job when they clearly don't care to shower or shave for the interview , and they would probably rock up late too with some bullshit excuse about public transport . You get out what you put into life ya know , so don't feel bad about those people , they did it to themselves and deserve it. Fuck feeling good about being generous and good willed, feel good about being a winner and basking in the fruits of all your hard work

Lol. I miss bein poor & no slave to tha time stealin dollar. I'm terrible at spending, when I finally do splurge on something I end up realizin i was just as happy without it. Two "expensive" items I'd be genuinely sad to live without though are a PC/internet (access to music/film and linkeage to places far & wide) and my bike.

Yep I’m far less interested in having the latest this or that than I used to be. Still have the same tv since 2009. The cult of consumerism is hollow as fuck... just like the people who participate and promote it.
