It's faster as long as you don't use Comcast. I use ethernet for my main computer because the connection is so tenuous.

3000 men (and 1 woman), more than a dozen ships and 1.5 million empty beer bottles dumped overboard: the story of the merchant vessels that got stuck for years in the Great Bitter Lake section of the Suez Canal as a result of the Six Day War.

The real Lord of the Flies: what happened when six boys were shipwrecked for 15 months

Then, on the eighth day, they spied a miracle on the horizon. A small island, to be precise. Not a tropical paradise with waving palm trees and sandy beaches, but a hulking mass of rock, jutting up more than a thousand feet out of the ocean. These days, ‘Ata is considered uninhabitable. But “by the time we arrived,” Captain Warner wrote in his memoirs, “the boys had set up a small commune with food garden, hollowed-out tree trunks to store rainwater, a gymnasium with curious weights, a badminton court, chicken pens and a permanent fire, all from handiwork, an old knife blade and much determination.” While the boys in Lord of the Flies come to blows over the fire, those in this real-life version tended their flame so it never went out, for more than a year.

Mathematicians Find a New Class of Digitally Delicate Primes

Filaseta-v1-1720x1290.jpg

Michael Filaseta, of the University of South Carolina, has helped prove the existence and extensiveness of “widely digitally delicate” prime numbers — each is so sensitive that changing any of its infinite digits makes it composite. Here, his sweatshirt lists the first 20 digitally delicate primes.

In Computero: Hear How AI Software Wrote a ‘New’ Nirvana Song

Quote

...

For the Lost Tapes project, Magenta analyzed the artists’ songs as MIDI files, which works similarly to a player-piano scroll by translating pitch and rhythm into a digital code that can be fed through a synthesizer to recreate a song. After examining each artist’s note choices, rhythmic quirks, and preferences for harmony in the MIDI file, the computer creates new music that the staff could pore over to pick the best moments.

“The more MIDI files you input, the better,” O’Connor says. “So we took 20 to 30 songs from each of our artists as MIDI files and broke them down to just the hook, solo, vocal melody or rhythm guitar and put those through one at a time. If you put whole songs through, [the program] starts to get really confused on what [it’s] supposed to sound like. But if you just have a bunch of riffs, it’ll put out about five minutes of new AI-written riffs, 90 percent of which is really bad and unlistenable. So you start listening through and just finding little moments that are interesting.”

...

this is really interesting. these things are being marketed as a novelty, like counterfeits of the artists. but this isn't a nirvana song, it's a song by the team that used AI to create it. this is a new tool for composition. it seems like right now it's ML engineers geeking out who are cooking up the machine learning tunes that have been put out recently, but eventually this methodology will be incorporated by some real composers. you know ae and afx must be thinking about it at least.

even aside from melodic structures or rhythms, i think ML could be used as a kind of production tool. like when you put an image through deep dream, it gets a sheen to it. someone put scorcese's the irishman through ML and it looked more realistic. maybe it could be used to clean up tracks that have issues or fill in gaps.

there must be potential for effects VSTs...
