Casio FZ samplers

Who has one of these then? They have waveforms built in so you can use it as an 8 voice multitimbral polysynth. Aphex's new track abundance seems to be using it for the lush pads and bassline. I heard they are a bit shit for editing, the envs are annoying to edit but they keyboard version is really good,has a good keybed and stuff. Guess the price will go up now that Abundance has shown what it can do. I'd rather get a sampler with analogue bandpass filters like the Roland S770.

I almost got one of these from the Zappa estate as a kid in the 90s not knowing what it was. I just wanted some piece of Zappa history and the only things even vaguely affordable were two FZ series keyboards left over from the 1988 tour at $100 each. Which was a LOT for a kid in the 90s, but I almost managed to get my dad to loan it to me for the month or so it would take me to save it up working at the video store on weekends, until he found out it was for a casino keyboard. None of us realized "casino keyboard" could mean anything other than a Casiotone, so it seemed like a huge ripoff.


Bad move in retrospect.

 

 

If nothing else, I would have probably ended up being a way more sample-oriented musician, as it is I couldn't afford a proper sampler until like 2009 (before that I had a couple of SK-1's and an Akai S612 - still have one of the SK's and the 612 - but that hardly counts).

There was one week in college where I managed to score that s612 with the drive and half a dozen quickdiscs, an Akai HR-16 (grey version) with power supply, a 1960s Wurlitzer electric piano and a really nice Nizo super8 film camera modified to generate sync all for free, because the chair of the department was "forward thinking" which meant we had some K-2500s and Kymas and some flavor of late 90s E-Mu workstations but literally not a single analog synth in the entire building, and anything that was more than a few years old was headed for the trash within a year or so of him becoming chair.  Which worked out pretty great for me, although everything I got during that year (there was more) is long gone except the s612 and that Wurlitzer (that's languishing in my parents' basement right now because it needs some repairs that I can't afford right now and I don't have space for it anyhow).

 

Anyhow, I don't have any real insight into the FZ samplers except that every time I think of them I get a wave of GAS and regret.

 

FWIW a friend of mine got a VZ-1 last year and it's really cool.

That Roland doesn't have analog filters, though they are known for having really nice sound filters. The E-mu Emulator 1-3 have analog filters. The S-950 has an analog filter too, but it isn't resonant. You can connect an Akai VX90 to the 900/950 and use its filters and envelopes with it, but I don't really know if that's any easier than just running an output channel to any external filter you have. 

 

If you're looking at one of those Roland samplers, make sure you find a mouse for it and have an old monitor or tv that you can connect to. They look like an absolute headache to use without the peripherals. Roland MV-8000/8800 has the S-760 sampler built into it, btw. 

 

I've never heard of these Casio FZ samplers until that Aphex tune, so I can't really comment on them.

casio FZ and VZ sound very tri repetae to me. a friend had one for a long time i used to make patches on it and first thought was tri repetae machine. has that kind of tone to it.   kawai k4r has a smilar thing though not as much character but circuit bends well.
