Looking at some second hand Nords online in various spots.

What are people's thoughts here on the differences between models? I've read a bit of stuff on gearslutz but nothing is really coming through consistently between the different users.

Older models much cheaper than the newer ones on the second hand market - whats the tip?

Very confusing stuff: I'm in the same position as you, got my eyes out for a NL Rack 3 personally. The very general consensus (that varies wildly per personal accounts of course) basically get 'better' as you go 1-4, but 1 or 2 is the more 'classic' NL sound, with 2 being much more versatile than 1. 3 and 4 are definitely still NLs but the guts started to get a little too good (remembering that of course Clavia are trying to emulate stuff like piano and analog synths generally with the NLs) for electronic weirdness and the sounds got slightly more stale or normal or something? I'm still not 100% sure as I'm basing all of this on Gearslutz and other places talking and posting some examples and such. 2, 2x & 3 are all pretty much the same but the UI on 3 is much better basically, hence why I'm interested in that one. The forum-wankerTM consensus is that the 2 or 2x is 'the best' basically, still a 'raw' sound whatever that means. 1 is too constrained, 4 is too 'good' and normcore. There are expansion cards on the first two, I think, that allow for more polyphony and user save spots, I think?

No one even talks about the A1R even though it's basically the successor to the NL from my understanding.

Someone with more actual real knowledge and experience could probably be more useful as I'm probably just regurgitating what you've already heard Stick, but I'm honestly sorta hoping that the users here can come explain where I'm wrong or give their take on things. I'm pretty set on wanting a 3 but still not 100% sure and would listen to any reasoning why another is better....I'm honestly not totally sure I want one at all.

I definitely want a NL3, but I'm happy with my 1; actually it's basically my favourite synth ever.

The 2 is a step up from the 1 in that it has ringmod, filter overdrive, 4 outs and a few other features. I haven't really heard any detailed sound comparisons but I'm pretty sure they're very similar apart from the new features in the 2.

I'd say get the 2.. or maybe the 2x, though that doesn't have the ridiculous Pelle's mode, which is almost useless, but is a strange/interesting easter egg..

I've always fancied a Nord Lead, mainly because they're red.

Had a Nord Lead 2 Rack for a while, really didn't gel with it, felt too cold and weak sounding...traded it for a Tetra - very happy with the Tetra  :cisfor:

My first synthesizer was the Nord Lead 2 keyboard version, purchased around 2006.

Couple of random thoughts about Nord models:

- Nord lead/rack 2x is the basically the same as the lead/rack 2, just with some updated specs. One great thing about this model is that it has "drum kits." Pretty sure AE used these badboys for drum sounds on various albums and live performances. Also, all around great interface without much menu diving, and a pretty distinct sonic character.

- The Nord lead/rack 3 has the same sound engine as the Nord Modular G2. Some disliked the engine change here, but I've never owned either so can't really compare to my Lead 2. Sound great to me from everything I've heard.

- Don't know much about the current models, the Lead 4 or the Lead A1

Huh that's interesting. They're so rare here that I thought they might be something amazing. Anything in particular that made it unsatisfactory?

The sound it made, I could never get it to sit well in a mix. The wave support is very basic, you can't really do anything fun with it. The sound is pretty harsh and brittle and the distortion and filter(s) were kind of arse, LFOs couldn't be synced to midi. That's all I remember. Lots of knobs and red though, so that bit was good. I mostly ended up using it for simple FM stuff.

Oh yeah, unsynced LFOs are a Nord specialty. I think they have some feature where the LFO is retriggered in sync, but the actual speed is still not related to the tempo.

Reading online is pretty funny - everyone who is slagging it saying it doesn't sound analog enough - which is fine but also mainly why I want it . People saying to get a minilogue instead ... absurd

lol

I fucking love the sound. It can be warm when you want it, with the right filter settings, but I do really love pushing it to its limit and getting super aliased digital sounds out of it. It'd be interesting to see if the 2 has the same aliasing..

i have a 2x rack and NL3 rack.

i love them both.  they're very different.  he 3 has the simple FM mode which i find excellent and overall the synth has the best interface of any synth ever.  i really like the sound of it.

the 2x is way different. FM character is quite different. it's rich. i like the drum modes a lot.

the NL1 is rad. FM character is way different than the others.  it's way more vintagey sounding or something. .or has that 90s character stamped on it.

at work we have a NL KB w/voice expansion that gives it 12 voices and the drum patches. i've played it a bunch. it's dope. in a perfect world i'd have bought it and taken it home already. it's minty. prced at $750

Those nords always seemed like preset boxes that would be on stage at a megachurch.

you're thinking of a korg triton.. or maybe the nord stage piano but the nord leads are pretty great.. musical and fit in a mix pretty nicely. well lush as the saying goes..

Can someone tell me which is the best one, and maybe a good video about it? Think I wouldn’t mind an older one, and a rack module since I don’t have space for a big thing.

I really just want a Nord Drum 2 or a Modular 2, which are both kind of hard to find for a fair price these days.

Nord rack 2 is the classic version.

Nord Drum 2 is totally worth it. If I start selling my gear it's going to be one of the last things to go.

Nord Rack 2 maybe. I'm pretty sure 90% of the melodic synthesis on LP5 (and Chiastic Slide/Cichli Suite) is from a Nord Lead. It has a very distinctive highpass filter that is all over mid-late 90s Autechre. Also, the crazy FM noises in acroyear2 are definitely from a Nord.

Nord Modular rack might also be a good choice; it can't quite replicate the architecture of the Nord Lead/Rack, particularly the unison and arpeggiator (or really, the usability/intuitiveness of the interface), but it's definitely amazing for its own reasons.

I had a Nord Lead 2x. Incredible synth. Nord Rack 2x would be my pick now, if I were to build up another studio setup

I could be wrong but I think a lot of the FM on those releases is the humble DX100.

Ah yeah maybe you're right. It is possible to get pretty much the exact same sounds on a Nord though!

It was for me!
