Part of me doesn't want to get a Nord because I don't want to end up copping those sounds basically. To those who have Not seen: is that something you run into often? Building shit up and going "well shit this sounds like AE tho"

doesn't matter what gear i use people tend to say that anyways. ;)

Nord 2x rack or 3 rack is what i'd go for. the 2x has more poly than the 2 i think and operates at higher internal bit/sample rate. the 3 does not have the drum patches which is a bummer.

Not always. Even the NL1 is a pretty diverse synth. Couple of ambient examples:

Listen on Soundcloud.com

Listen on Soundcloud.com

both just the NL1 through reverb.

Of course, I do like to go into full ae-ripoff mode sometimes:

Listen on Soundcloud.com

NL1 in 4-part mode, no external processing but sequenced by octatrack, before I got the poly expansion so it's only 4 mono voices; the voice stealing is super glitchy and kinda awesome.

the 2x has more poly than the 2 i think and operates at higher internal bit/sample rate. the 3 does not have the drum patches which is a bummer.

yeah I'd be interested in trying the 2x; I wonder if some of the more "chalky" / aliased sounds I've been able to coax out of my Nord are possible if it's got a higher resolution engine.

thx m8

I keep making new patches on it. I'm on a bit of an expressive kick with it lately. Every parameter can be assigned to velocity/mod wheel, even arpeggiator speed, so it's really easy to get super expressive sounds out of it.

I've come across a Nord micro modular for $400 AUD.

Thoughts on that?

All nice, I like when you let them off the rails at the end of the first and the third ones :)

Anyway I'm trying to talk myself out of a Nord because I'd be too tempted to go that full ripoff direction, I think I've got an idea of what might work for me instead.

I think the micro is hella cute and would be super fun, would've enjoyed having one a few years back...I think last I looked into the modulars that there's some software issues with working on more modern systems since Nord abandoned the editor? I could be mistaken though.

Not for that price; you could honestly probably get a G1 rack for not much more these days. I've seen the micro go for $250–$300 so maybe wait a while..

As for the editor, there are a few options available. The stage-engine WINE one works well for me, but I'm still on El Capitan on my studio imac—I've heard there are issues with later OS versions.

They are big bastards aren't they ... for some reason I thought they were a bit smaller . Unlikely I'll fit my stuff on my work space if I get it .

I've kind of always tried to have everything plugged in and integrated but am opening up to the idea of owning gear that is not necessarily plugged into my set up all the time

You guys operate in a similar way ?

My buddy Flaty rinsing his nl4r nowadays. And it has pretty awesome features like formant filters and so on.

Basically this mix is nl4r + h3000
Notice weird voice synthesis starting at ~11:55

They're big but not unwieldy. The G1 modular rack is a bit weird in that it's a big wedge; I don't think the 1/2/2x racks are quite as prism-shaped.

I entertained the thought of having everything plugged in at once, but it's too hard to manage. I never use it all together anyway. I usually have smaller setups of 1-3 pieces of gear at a time, which means I can learn how to maximise each piece instead of just using it for one voice etc. I often use my G1 modular on its own.

I'm pretty done with getting stuff and have been for a while now, but the Nord Drum 2 is one of the few pieces of gear that still makes me think about saving up and buying one some day.

If you can handle the very reasonable limitations (e.g. no real LFO, no attack on the tone envelope, only stereo output) it's one of the most immediate, flexible, and nice-sounding drum synths around. It's one of the few pieces of gear I'm confident I won't ever get sick of. The whole multiple spectra/timbre setup is a brilliant way to quickly design sounds. The noise/click layers let you give it that extra oomph. The EQ, distortion, and echo give you just enough shaping/processing that you don't really need anything to butter it up (but it doesn't hurt, either).

I really just want a Nord Drum 2 or a Modular 2, which are both kind of hard to find for a fair price these days.

Nord Drum 2 is totally worth it. If I start selling my gear it's going to be one of the last things to go.

I didn't plan on buying any new gear for a while, but my friend was selling his Nord Drum 2. Had to grab it!

I've seen used Nord Drum 2's going for more than what a brand new 3 costs. From what I can gather the 3 is the same as the 2 but with integrated pads. Am I missing something?

I heard that there were a few features that were eliminated in the Drum 3/P, but I have no idea what they were.
