Flying Lotus - TBA

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Tracks "Spontaneous" and "Takashi" are listenable.

https://flying-lotus.warp.net/release/129090-flying-lotus-flamagra

Spontaneous is ok. Sounds like something I could hear at any time on my Spotify daily mix though. Nothing remarkable.

Takashi is a bit better.

Spontaneous is forgettable. Little Dragon helps carry it along but there's nothing to it. Sounds like a filler track.

Takashi is indeed a bit better, couple moments of hope here and there, i.e. actual bursts experimental weirdness, but as it gets going it turns into a noodling, almost YT shreds style jazz track that could have easily been Thundercat.

If these are the singles I hope it's scenario where the weakest but safest tracks are previewed first (like 0PN's last album) but I'm worried it's the opposite.

You know how the FBI gives up on case often decades before officially closing it? They don't completely let go of hope in another development but nonetheless indicate it's pretty much over. I'm starting to feel that way about FlyLo. Same with Machinedrum, even though I offered an apologism rant about his last album initially.

How is the topic title still 'TBA' when the title has been known for months?

New single out today, FlyLo says it's a tribute to Quasimoto's Come On Feet. Most enjoyable FlyLo track I've heard in a while, sounds like he doesn't try too hard and it's refreshing !

Seems like the general consensus was this is going to be "meh".

Care factor low = thread title no-changey.

Man I always get excited for Flying Lotus but I don't like any of the new tracks which features another artist. It isn't FlyLo either, its the person he colaborates with who puts their crappy rapping on top of an otherwise good instrumental (or at least it sounds like it could be good. Just like Lil B's screeching vocals on top of "I'm God" by Clams Casino. It mixes as well as oil and water.

Now that I think about it I haven't liked a featured artist on a FlyLo album since Cosmogramma. Most of the good tracks are always just him, even with that side project from a few years back where he pretended to be an unknown rapper where he himself rapped. Thom Yorke is one of my favorite artists and I don't even like his colabs post Cosmogramma.

It's kinda disappointing that I know I won't like at least a fourth of the album after a 5 year wait.

100% this. This is my entire gripe with his output since cosmo. UTQC had it's moments but yeah.

+1.  Part of what made los angeles such a great album is it was all his world.  The features on there (laura darlington and gonjasufi) sounded like they were inhabiting his track rather than the other way around.

Collaborations like the Kendrick track on Youre Dead for example really break the flow for me, despite being good as a standalone track

I like the packaging, but not the content.  Sorry.

Counterpoint, I quite like this. A pleasant surprise for me and the first album of his I've liked since Cosmogramma. It has quite a few featured artists but I think most of them work within the context of the album. Most of the tracks I'm not super into are the singles they used to promote the album. I may be in the minority here but I'm digging this and although it can't touch Cosmogramma, it at least sounds like a return to form to these ears.

Yeah this, the mixing is off but I agree that's it cuts deeper than some audio gripes - it's a decent rap but it just doesn't gel overall. The above track is alright as an instrumental: decent beat, a break from the jazz noodling, but nothing that has a trademark Flylo weirdness to it. I hope it's a sign that this album has some diversity in sound but I dunno. I have a feeling it will be disjointed or MOR. Either way it's no where near as bad as I'd worry it be, the singles have been better and better.

For context i was only talking about the collaborations from youre dead.  Havent had a chance to hear this new album, maybe it will flow better.

On another note, I dont think any mods have posted in this thread but if any see, please change title to Flying Lotus - Flamagra

His best since Cosmogramma, for real. It ain't Los Angeles but at least he's not taking himself so seriously anymore and it shows - the album is FUN!

Intrigued by this. LA is a stone cold classic.

he dedicated it to madlib and egon but not Alain Goraguer?  Smh.. gotta respect the foundations you're building on.  Im referring to the composer of planete sauvage who wrote the piano line that was sampled in the quasimoto track, then again sampled (very prominently) here.

also.. from a production soundpoint this track is a bit lazy, almost like something an anonymous producer would pull out for a rap album.  And it doesnt do anything interesting or new with that sample.

There's some okay stuff on here but fuck me I don't ever want to hear 'yellow belly' again.

I guess I'm also in the Los Angeles / Reset club. Those releases are head and shoulders above his other stuff IMO.

To be fair, it does mark a notable resurgence from his nadir You're Dead! It does sound fun, agreed! The singles are pretty great, the guests flow well together. It isn't anywhere near LA/Cosmo/UTQC, and I don't want to buy it, but I approve, he ain't done yet. Little bit instant aged milk, but adequately convinces as a funky space reincarnation.
