The Socialist Response to the 2020 Presidential Debate

GLR-RES-1.jpg?1601432636

Tonight’s debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden was testament to how little choice voters truly have in this so-called democracy. Gloria La Riva and Sunil Freeman are running in the presidential election to give voters a real alternative -- one that stands for the rights of the working class and in opposition to war, racism and the destruction of the environment. On these existential issues of our time and so many others, Trump and Biden have more in common than they pretend. Neither have a program to meet the scale of these crises — and under either one, they will only deepen.

One major theme of the debate was taxes, with Joe Biden posturing as the champion of “the middle class” by favorably comparing his own personal tax payments with Trump’s. Of course it is an outrage that someone as fabulously wealthy as Donald Trump paid virtually nothing in taxes for years. But it is also a common practice among the elite that rules this country.

Notably, one of the key ways that the ultra-rich and their corporations evade taxes is by setting up a shell headquarters in Delaware, a state with no corporate income tax. Joe Biden served as the Senator from Delaware for 36 years, becoming by far the most powerful man in the state’s politics. During these decades, Biden was silent on the issue. Couple that with his record of voting to gut social programs, embracing anti-worker free trade agreements and shielding the big banks from accountability for the 2008 financial crash -- Biden’s sudden change of heart about tax evasion by the wealthy is a display of utter hypocrisy and cannot be taken seriously.

We condemn Donald Trump’s racist attacks on the Black Lives Matter movement and his attempts to portray the righteous uprising as mindless violence and rioting. Gloria La Riva, Sunil Freeman and the entire PSL have been in the streets all summer as proud participants in the movement. But we cannot forget Joe Biden’s record either. Biden was a principal architect of mass incarceration through his authorship of the draconian 1994 crime bill, which he justified with rhetoric demonizing Black youth. Biden launched his political career as an avowed opponent of school desegregation and has repeatedly, publicly praised Senators who were among the most notorious defenders of Jim Crow apartheid -- Strom Thurmond, James Eastland and Herman Talmadge.

Neither candidate is willing to even consider the type of dramatic action that needs to be taken to tackle the Coronavirus pandemic and associated economic crisis. The PSL’s La Riva/Freeman campaign demands the immediate cancellation of rent and mortgage payments with no accumulation of debt, full replacement of all unemployed workers’ incomes, free healthcare for all and international cooperation to develop a vaccine.

The Gloria La Riva/Sunil Freeman ticket stands for a new system — socialism — where the working class and oppressed hold economic and political power, and the needs of the people and the planet are planned for and guaranteed.

Sorry, but you lost me at “FUCK BIDEN FUCK TRUMP”, followed by a copy and pasted blurb.
I would 100% prefer socialism to our current system, but IT AIN’T HAPPENING, especially with a country of inbred bible-thumpers and this close to the general election. Our best bet is to stay active, informed and engaged with local elections and do the hard work in the framework provided by our broken ass system.
Also, the myth of democrats and republicans being the same is tired and often promoted by the right wing to suppress voter turnout, and your post (however heartfelt it may be) comes at the wrong fucking time. I’m not sure what planet you’re on but we have a very real pandemic happening with one of those two dudes actively trying to have the virus win... and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. I don’t need to explain to you what else is bad about Donald Trump but if you don’t realize that he will win with interference, suppression and tampering unless a sizable vote for Biden comes in, then that’s on you. I’m not willing gamble right now. The stakes are too real and too high. I’d love the opportunity to vote for a socialist candidate in the future and, in order to do so, I believe I have to vote to preserve democracy first.

this is going to apply in every election ever from now on. its not like THIS election is the one election.  the last one and the ones before and the ones before and the ones before were exactly the same as this one. by the time the next potus takes office well be in the later waves of covid which will be smaller.

"it aint happening lets not talk about it" real great theory there having hope in electoralism to begin with as if PSL voters would have swung the election

Yeah, we aren't ready for all that yet. Pinch your nose, hope for 4 mediocre but relatively pleasant years rather than the metastasis of the progressing fascist cancer, and yeah please don't throw away your vote, etc. I don't disagree with you but it's just not the time. Wait for the boomers to die off and for a crisis that can't be ignored by "Don't Tread on Me" cosplayers. Biden knows that at best he's an interim guy and isn't pretending to be anything else, and that's all we need at the moment.

Sorry again but the prior elections weren’t the same. Except for the last one, all of them involved nominees that were committed to peaceful transitions of power and that weren’t shameless traitors / national security risks.

Re covid: Where are you getting that science from? That sounds more like wishful thinking to me, especially with our current (and potential future) leadership.

I also never said “let’s not talk about it”. I 100% think we should talk about it. I also believe we should also try our hardest to get the farthest left candidate in every seat of every state and local election... and every future presidential election. This presidential election however is unfortunately coming at a time where far left progressives like myself (and I’m assuming you are, unless you’re a right wing troll in disguise) have to read the writing on the wall and play the long game. AGAIN, it’s not exactly as sexy as voting for a socialist in the general election as it is to do all the more difficult work that is required to change our system, but voting for a socialist right now is quite literally putting a vote in the box for Trump. It’s bad enough his strategy is to divide and conquer. Let’s not do his job for him.

hi im far left and can also vouch that they're pretty fucking similar. they're both right wing parties that pretty much do and say the same things, regardless of the result, imperialism will continue, more people will die in the middle east, homelessness will not be acted on. didn't joe biden say that nothing would fundamentally change?

I never made an argument that the man is Jesus Christ. At least he believes in damn science and democracy. I’d say that is a much better starting point than the alternative, wouldn’t you?
Also, what is your position other than an anonymous voice on the internet to “vouch” for something of these matters? Are you a historian or a political scientist?

Also THEY DO NOT “DO AND SAY THE SAME THINGS”. Again, as I’ve stated, I’m a socialist-leaning progressive who believes the vast majority of Democrats have views that are too moderate for my liking, but that majority still champions women’s reproductive rights, lgbtq rights, environmental protection, collective bargaining and gun control (in addition to NUMEROUS other progressive issues) and they have to compromise to get bills and laws passed that don’t completely gut social services and basic human rights.
Also, if you haven’t been reading the news lately, there’s also this thing called the Supreme Court that’s kind of an important thing that presidents get to appoint lifetime members of and they get to decide on pretty important cases.
You might want to google it.

not so sure mate, us politics is so hyper-capitalist and conservative with the reps and the dems that the slightest difference in policy change makes the parties look different like black and white because their view is so zoomed in.

im just saying that from an outsider perspective the democrats are centre-right, and the republicans are slightly far right leaning but i am still standing by what i said. nothing at all will change. the usa will remain to be a volatile nation committing more wars and regime change, whilst millions remain in poverty, drug addiction, the justice system and homelessness on their own soil because there's no profit to be made in actually fixing those problems.

I think we agree on a lot. Unfortunately, our country’s composition is so diverse, and unfortunately so apathetic, uninformed and intentionally manipulated /brainwashed through propaganda and wedge issues that it takes more effort than it should to move the ball.
I can tell you, as someone who is intimately involved in politics (many years of protesting, letter writing, canvassing, phone banking, reaching out to state and local reps (in addition to in-person office visits), it’s hard enough getting a protected bike lane in a urban center on a street where cyclists regularly get smashed. Everything here takes real work to get something done.
I’m just saying that it’s easy to play armchair quarterback but the main issue really isn’t that Dems and Reps are the same. It’s that there’s conscious and organized opposition to progress and because of this, change definitely does not happen overnight, especially when half of the country is quite literally terrified of what they think socialism actually is.
Having said that, politicians play the game sometime. That’s been that way for over 200 years. I’m not arguing that it’s right, I’m just saying that it’s how it is. It sucks.

just a reminder, today is the last day to register to vote in the 2020 shit show for a number of states:

https://www.vote.org/voter-registration-deadlines/

how exciting. we're 30 days away from finding out what master Putin has in store for us next.

we likely won't know the results of the election until mid november because of counting all the mail in ballots. during this time.. from election night to whenever they count all teh votes.. the trump campaign will try to invalidate all the mail in ballots and claim victory in the election. so far the polls are showing that most trump supporters will vote in person and most biden supporters will vote by mail.. so they're expecting trump to look good on election night but then biden to look better as each day passes.. they're already calling it a "Blue Shift"

Revealed: Trump-linked consultant tied to Facebook pages warning election will cause civil war

Network run by fake news-publishing father and son spreads word to Trump supporters they should prepare for violence in November

Quote

A militia-promoting father and son duo of fake news publishers and a Trump-connected social media consultant are linked to pages which promote the idea of an American civil war with material presented in a way that appears to be an effort to sidestep Facebook’s fact-checking system.

Comments on their Facebook pages and other materials obtained by the Guardian show that some rank and file Donald Trump supporters are enthusiastically receiving the message that they should prepare for violence against their perceived political enemies in November.

The network is comprised of websites owned and operated by Dino Porrazzo Sr and Dino Porrazzo Jr, whose company, AFF Media, is headquartered in Pinon Hills in California. The pair have been running rightwing websites since at latest 2013, according to DNS website records.

The Porrazzos now run a network of websites that enthusiastically promote Trump, and far right anti-government militias like the Three Percenters, and offer distorted versions of current events. One of their Facebook pages, “Prepare to Take America Back” (PTTAB) at the time of reporting had 794,876 followers. Analysis with social media metrics tool Crowdtangle shows that over the last three months PTTAB posts have been shared over 141,000 times, and on average 9,600 times a week.

At that time, the page’s header featured the logo of the Three Percenters, a decentralized group that the ADL calls a “wing of the militia movement”; a group of armed men in tactical gear; and a modified copy of the US presidential seal.

In general, the page promotes conspiracy theories and criminal allegations about Democratic party politicians, liberal celebrities and leftist protesters, some of which – like persistent claims that Hillary Clinton will be imminently arrested – overlap with aspects of the so-called “QAnon” conspiracy theory movement.

The page makes free use of political memes, but many posts link to a small cluster of rightwing websites designed to appear like news outlets. Increasingly, over the course of 2020, the page has been warning of a stolen election, and suggesting this will lead to civil war.

Repeatedly in September, the page linked to a story on the website Right Wing Tribune, headlined “Radical Left Prepares For ‘Mass Public Unrest,’ ‘Political Apocalypse’ And Possible Civil War Should Be Expected If Biden Loses [Opinion]”, with Facebook captions including “the left wants war”.

The story had a limited basis in fact, in that a number of progressive groups had met in early September to discuss the prospect of civil unrest and political violence after the election with a belief that the violence they were anticipating would be coming from Trump supporters and the far right.

Nevertheless, the Right Wing Tribune piece concluded with a conspiracy theory: “These groups are heavily focused on removing President Trump from office as well as different scenarios which all lead to a second revolution in which they control our nation as a “New America”.”

Similarly distorted stories warning of a “siege of the white house”, peppered the page throughout September and warnings of a post-election civil war were posted over the last year.

Last November, the page linked to a site called Flag and Cross, and a story which it described as an “excellent opinion piece”, entitled “Winning the New Civil War (OPINION)”.

The piece claimed on the basis of antifascist protests and comments by Democratic politicians that, “We have many strong indications that this is a hot war”.

The transparency page for PTTAB discloses that PTTAB is managed by Southern California-based AFF Media Inc, and that the Vici Media Group “partners with this page”.

According to California records, AFF Media was incorporated on Donald Trump’s inauguration day, 20 January 2017; in other documents, Dino Porrazzo Jr is listed as CEO and CFO, and Dino Porrazzo Sr as secretary. But the Guardian has discovered that the Porrazzos are further involved in running a dizzying array of interconnected sites and social media pages. The Annenberg Public Policy initiative lists two of their websites on its “Misinformation Directory” of “websites that have posted deceptive content”.

One of the listed sites is Right Wing Tribune. But all of the other sites linked to by the PTTAB Facebook page also appear to belong to AFF, with similar design, shared bylines and shared source code.

This is not some dark corner of the Internet, this is not a fringe thing, it’s mainstream Republicans.
Becca Lewis, Stanford University

The Porrazzos have been previously reported as having links to the Three Percenters, a decentralized, national militia movement that the Southern Poverty Law Center categorizes as anti-government extremists.

Becca Lewis researches online extremism and disinformation at Stanford University. In a telephone conversation, she said that the page and the associated websites represented a sophisticated effort to skirt Facebook’s fact-checking efforts.

“It seems as though they are being very strategic in their messaging so as to not be shut down,” Lewis said, adding that viewing the ostentatious labeling of opinion as an effort to sidestep fact-checking is “absolutely a reasonable assumption”.

In June, Heated reported that climate change deniers were exploiting the same loophole to “make any climate disinformation ineligible for fact-checking by deeming it “opinion”. In August, NBC reported that Facebook had systematically relaxed its fact-checking rules for conservative outlets and personalities.

In a telephone conversation, Dino Porrazzo Jr asserted that PTTAB had had “zero fact-check violations”, characterizing his websites as “opinion websites based on fact”. Asked if they were fact-checked at all, Porrazzo said “no”, but added: “I don’t work at Facebook”. Asked if he thought that there really was a civil war coming, Porrazzo accused the Guardian of “writing a hit piece to get me thrown off Facebook”, and then ended the conversation.

Facebook Media did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Porrazzos also have links to Republican officials.

The registered agent for the company is an elected official in California, Ensen Mason, who was elected as San Bernardino county auditor-controller in California as a nonpartisan candidate, but who is listed as a member of the San Bernardino Republican party.

In an email, however, Ensen Mason said that in relation to the Porrazzos, his accounting firm’s role “is strictly limited to accounting services and registered agent”.

The Vici Media Group, meanwhile, is run by Patrick Mauldin, who is a social media consultant for the Trump campaign and other Republican politicians, and his brother, Ryan.

The company was hired in 2016 by one-time Trump campaign manager and recently-resigned campaign consultant, Brad Parscale, to be part of the team that was widely credited with winning Trump the election. In June, Patrick Mauldin was identified as the creator of a fake Joe Biden site that was compared in New York Times reporting to “disinformation spread by Russian trolls”.

In an email, Ryan Mauldin disavowed the Porrazzos’ publishing output, writing, “Vici Media Group was engaged for a small, non-content-related project by the managers of the page.”

Mauldin added, “We have no input on the content published by the various sites or the comments made on that content. We are not working for the Trump campaign.”

Mauldin did not immediately respond to attempts to further clarify the nature of their work for the Porrazzos, and to clarify New York Times reporting as recent as June 2020 that said Patrick Mauldin was on a retainer for the Trump campaign, and considered a “rising star”.

Porrazzo refused to specify the nature of AFF’s relationship with Vici Media Group.

Meanwhile, the content of the Porrazzo pages does appear to trigger extreme responses among users. Hundreds of user comments on the page’s posts suggest the use of violence against perceived political enemies. On a 5 September post linking to a Right Wing Tribune article suggesting that Democrats will foment civil war if Biden loses, one user commented, “a short civil war with the democrats and those who support socialist policies will go a long way to help Make America Great Again”.

Another connects civil war to their belief that a Trump loss is impossible, writing “If [Biden] wins, it’ll be from fraud on an industrial scale, and the lesson that’ll have to be taught for that will necessarily be no less industrial.”

Many welcome the prospect of armed conflict – one writes “That’s fine with me open season on democrats!”. Another deployed accused murderer Kyle Rittenhouse as a positive example, writing “I think it will be more whining, crying, rioting, looting and a lot of Kyles protecting their cities, towns and neighborhoods.”

Asked to comment on the site’s apparent reach, and the nature of its community, Lewis, the extremism researcher, said: “This is not some dark corner of the internet, this is not a fringe thing, it’s mainstream Republicans that are stoking this.”

On links to the Trump campaign, she said that the distorted content and the violent user comments formed a kind of “feedback loop”, and that “Trump and his campaign staff have been masters at exploiting these feedback loops”.

On Tuesday night, meanwhile, following the Guardian’s outreach to the Porrazzos and Facebook that day, Dino Porrazzo announced on Twitter that he “HAD TO DELETE A FEW ARTICLES I WROTE TODAY BECAUSE THEY WERE DEMED FALSE BY BASEMENT DWELLING LIBERAL FACT CHECKERS”.

Donald Trump is busy running the largest misinformation campaign in history as he questions the legitimacy of voting by mail, a method that will be crucial to Americans casting their vote in a pandemic.

This is one of a number of attempts to suppress the votes of Americans – something that has been a stain on US democracy for decades. The Voting Rights Act was passed 55 years ago to undo a web of restrictions designed to block Black Americans from the ballot box. Now, seven years after that law was gutted by the supreme court, the president is actively threatening a free and fair election.

Through our Fight to vote project, the Guardian has pledged to put voter suppression at the center of our 2020 coverage. This election will impact every facet of American life. But it will not be a genuine exercise in democracy if American voters are stopped from participating in it.

At a time like this, an independent news organisation that fights for truth and holds power to account is not just optional. It is essential. Like many other news organisations, the Guardian has been significantly impacted by the pandemic. We rely to an ever greater extent on our readers, both for the moral force to continue doing journalism at a time like this and for the financial strength to facilitate that reporting.

You’ve read more than 31 articles in the last year. We believe every one of us deserves equal access to fact-based news and analysis. We’ve decided to keep Guardian journalism free for all readers, regardless of where they live or what they can afford to pay. This is made possible thanks to the support we receive from readers across America in all 50 states.

As our business model comes under even greater pressure, we’d love your help so that we can carry on our essential work.

^ the way he removes that mask is pure showmanship, like watching an actor being told to remove their mask dramatically. wonder if he practiced that beforehand. and I read something today that he had the camera crew re-do his walk into the white house without a mask on, which is exactly what you should do when you've just returned from the hospital after contracting covid.

Except he looked dumb when it stuck to his ear. He clearly lacks practice with masks.
