I'm Ashamed of WATMM Sometimes

I don't think you have to see it this way. is this because of connections you have with people in the business? because if I were in your position and had started an initially lowkey site for niche electronic music nerds, I would view it as a fishtank experiment and corral it carefully from the rest of my life, even if it grew big and developed more profile and connections over time. it'd be too exhausting to worry about every single post and how it reflects on you/makes you look to others, and besides, don't you always say that you only make time for WATMM when you can? that's incongruous with this view.

forgetting about what makes (or made) this place a community by insisting it all belongs to you is always going to drive a wedge between you and everyone else.

the only correct way to WATMM, aint nobody got time for this shit except when taking one.

It's not only the connections I have, it's me as an individual - when this place was turning into a boy's club of porn images and sexual threads, it was frankly embarrassing when people would comment on things like that, and I can't just hand wave it away saying "Well, that's not my views", because then the next question would be "then why do you provide people a platform to do/say that?".

I don't worry about everything that goes on here - it's impossible, even with help from the mods, which is why I do not think it's an unreasonable expectation for people to behave like they would in public for the most part. I'm not saying don't have fun and be silly, but temper it with some common sense and with enough restraint it doesn't go off the rails unintentionally.

The community does NOT belong to me, nor do I claim ownership of it - all your contributions are what makes WATMM special, but it is far too easy to spoil that - by degrees or by shoving it off the deep end. I am RESPONSIBLE for it however, and that's where my concerns lie.

also no one's gonna chide @cichlisuite for that bullshit post?  what a hot mess, lawd reekris. you start off sounding like you could maybe excuse yourself for lashing out and then immediately lose the plot by posting, unprompted and unwarranted, a defense of your remarks based "the truth" of Nazi history and the "power hungry" jewish cabal, classic hate tropes. evidently you have a grudge against jews and it led to you posting those slurs, simple. just cos you might be nice to a passing jewish person in the streets doesn't clear that specific act of posting those remarks for those shitty reasons.

I did - might have missed that with the starting of a new page.

In any case aspiring to make ppl behave on an online platform like in a "live" public space where they can and have to look into each others eyes is just completely unrealistic in my estimation.

I'm really not - I'm just saying to think of it like that so we don't go to a place where we regret saying something we normally wouldn't say in public. Just use common sense and judgement (I know that can be a bit too much to ask from some people sometimes) as best as you can.

Wow, I’ve sensed some tense here lately, but this crisis came totally out of blue. IMO, there are two issues that I see produces some unnecessary conflicts around here and why not in other places in general.

TLDR edition:

1 The lack of common sense

2 General cynicism

Summa summarum: please people chill the fuck out & please Joyrex, don’t turn this to a place where I have to watch my feet not to crush fragile snowflakes and be constantly worried about what I can say.

Very well said, and no - I don't want it to become so PC that we're walking on eggshells in fear of offending someone, but by the same token, there doesn't need to be blatant savagery and cruelness either. I think being mindful of what you say, how you say it, and whom you are saying it to, and using your best judgement is not incompatible with having a laugh and a good time (sometimes at the expense of others, deserving or not) without going too far with it.

What's your point - the community (e.g., YOU) and what you guys post here are yours - you contribute, create, share, etc. as long as it fits into the rules that govern the community.

However, the SITE (e.g., the software, server, URL, ect.) that I maintain and manage is 100% my responsibility, and part of that maintenance is ensuring it doesn't descend into a bed of chaos (sorry if I triggered any Dark Souls fans with that choice of words).

You also conveniently didn't highlight the bit in the first part that reinforces what I just said - "I am RESPONSIBLE for it", and nobody has a right do do whatever they wish if it's contrary to the rules.

I have a feeling Joyrex is going to retire from watmm soon. Read a few things of late which tells me he's had enough.

Farewell Master of the Realm.

My eye muscles just tore from how hard I just rolled them... I'm not going anywhere anytime soon.

Apologies if I seem tired or frustrated from time to time... I just can't understand how we went from a period of relative calm/peace to this shitshow all of a sudden (seriously, there wasn't a banning for years prior to the spate of them we've had recently - because there was no need to, even when the site saw huge influxes of users around the Autechre AAA, the Caustic Window LP Kickstarter, and Syro and Collapse EP releases.

At the end of the day, we are all dust in the wind. Even WATMM will end up at hotel California eventually. We don’t have to fear the reaper quite so much. So put me in, coach. I’m ready to play today. Country road, take me home. We didn’t start the fire, etc.

I propose the forum equivalent of carbon offsetting - Any time you post something nasty about some someone/something you have to go into another thread to post something nice about someone/something.

Balance yer yings and your yangs and all that.

And wouldn't the Nice Thread be just the place for that? Such foresight ...

As a soon to be qualified Speech and Language Therapist, I would fully agree with lots of these sentiments. The autism discussion is really toxic and in my mind simply isn't something that should be so frequently joked about here. There's being funny and there's being smart.

I'm all for having fun here too, especially when it comes to the dank. But yeah, it's also wise not to throw around "autistic" as an insult. I've already seen that from alt-right scumbags elsewhere.

two great posts in a row auxien, you're on fire

Rubin Farr (even the name) is a watmm classic, he's out on his own somewhere in space (Farr out on Planet Rubin)

I'd put him down as an eccentric Englishman but I believe he is American? I think he wears a beret, so maybe he is French?

It would seem the man is a mystery and a law unto himself

How about a small fine for any insubordination, a kind of community swear box. Pay up or risk banishment.

But I'm sure you're also proud of the site sometimes? Hopefully it balances out, evensteven.

I don't think the occasional person who I've seen use it ACTUALLY has something against people with autism. I'd rather just give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they're joking, or that the use isn't meant to be taken seriously. And If they're being serious, then that's their personal issue, and not something I should worry about.

Overall this website is pretty tame compared to others. If you want to see a truly toxic community check out 4chan or an incel or donald trump subreddit.

I'm eager with anticipation that æ return to an older, more melody-driven sound. I'm frankly tired of the avant-garde experimentalism their last 4 or so releases have featured prominently.

I, too, am ashamed of WATMM sometimes.
