Love this thread.

Hakobune is probably my favorite drone artist, although you might say he borders on drone / ambient.  This track is so beautiful:

Some more Hakobune:

This is prob. bordering on not drone but I don't care, it's great:

He used to collaborate a lot with Nobuto Suda, who also released some great drone / ambient:

In these days I'm going to listen to all this pieces posted I never heard

Some time ago I was very interested in the figure of La Monte Young, the godfather of drone in west culture. The shift in perception of the notion of time and structure is the turning point that fundamental composers like him and Riley got from their interest into indian and oriental cultures and music.
It's awesome that this happened and it was decisive for the evolution of music.
(while other minimalistic composers such as Steve Reich took inspiration from african music with all those patterns, that in my opinion heavily influenced the evolution of electronic dance music)

This is where all started:

I think this audio was originally recorded for some art installation.  Steven Stapleton later reworked this to be more interesting for personal listening

The Vernacular Surface release has this info:

Quote

"Salty" consists of the sound elements added to 'Salt' (originally from the Music For The Horse Hospital / Sounds From The Horse Hospital to transform the track into Salt Marie Celeste. In the original SMC CD release these elements are introduced over an hour-plus duration - here they are foreshortened into a track length of 25:25 mins.

There seem to be a few different vinyl/cd versions (to name but a few):

Oren Ambarchi remains one of my faves:

This works wonders dog walking in the bastard rain.

From another direction, some dark ambient from Psychic TV affiliates Sigillum S that floats across the dronescapes

Their Bardo Thos-Grol lp has sections that get deeep drone...pretentious, fun, pointless, nod-heavy moments of genius, double-up on in mixes. That’s kind of why drone mixes can be so much of a blast to fk around with, you have so many options with layering, harmonics, how that shapes transitions/blends, no tyranny of the beat apart from the textures themselves & even that isn’t necessarily relevant, maaaaaan.

New Abul Mogard live set from the weekend, bit of Above All Dreams in there but otherwise new material.  Hopefully means new album at some point.  I've just had it on loop in the background this evening, sounds great.

Man I really have slept on Nurse With Wound, I always assumed it was a more noise/industrial project versus drone. This thread also introduced me to Éliane Radigue. Really good work everyone.

He's excellent, have a couple tapes by him off Ctatsu.

Some of my absolute favorites have been mentioned here.  I'll share something lesser known, but sorry I'm new here and I can't figure out this bandcamp embed shit.

"Cathedral was composed over a two-year period almost entirely from piano samples, plus a very few of night-time crickets recorded in our wildflower garden in central Ohio, where Elizabeth Deupree took the cover photo. It was originally released in 2008 on the Treetrunk netlabel and is presented here in a remastered version. "
