i'm gonna start an industrial psychedelic goth drone nu-metal band and you cannot stop me but you can help my vision.

i have decided this morning that it is time i finally put together a band. a band that will blow minds. i have a vision, but it is blurry as of yet.

some background: recently i played fretless bass on halloween doing a goth miley cyrus cover thing. i was actually amazed how cool it sounded to play fretless with overdrive and reverb and it actually turned out amazing and the chemistry between me and the guitar player was good. he does like drone shit but he's generally versatile. a bit too much of a stoner at times but not retarded level. either way, i found the experience of playing in a 'dark' band to be actually quite exhilarating. i used to play punk, moved on to classical and then jazz. and of course i make electronic music. but the whole thing, the presentation, how much the crowd loved the drama, the theatre of the thing. it was awesome. so i'm gonna make a band. i'm gonna be the front man. i'm gonna contort myself into weird poses and come up with a strange hair-do. these things are going to happen. i got a drummer on lock who is down, he knows how to tackle any style. plus he's bald so that's kind of aesthetically cool. guitar guy is super skinny with long hair and big beard. i'm salv, u kno me.

so i'm trying to draw from a lot of sources to synthesize the aesthetic i want to achieve. so i will list off some influences.

- DAF. "alles ist gut". want to have dissonance and darkness and quietness
- bauhaus noodly guitar noises
- nitzer ebb synths
- einsturzende neubauten brutality
- aenima era tool live performances. i want to be all weirdly contorting and having that interplay of soft/loud
- korn. a bit of 'falling away from me'. not the vocals but some of the general production and harshness
- sonic youth. want to use the kind of alternate tunings and jangly bits. later era stuff with jim o'rourke. ambient loop soundscapes.
- mick karn fretless bass style stuff
- diamanda galas
- NIN obvs
- holy music such as gregorian chant and tibetan shit. out there stuff. microtones.

but somehow fuse things together in a way where everything is dark and bewildering and in your face at times but then fading into shimmering ambience and drone. want it to feel like a continuous experience that fuckin blows the minds of the audience. drama. excitement. weirdness. just the whole damn package.

so yeah just like gimme stuff i should listen to to get the creative juices flowin. i mean they are flowin. sort of. but i want them to gush, baby. make me gush, fuckers

well, my idea was that there will be 'pop-ish' songs that are catchy and people remember that are fairly short, but we will intersperse everything with noise and drone and sampledelic collage type shit. but in a way that builds energy and tension and keeps people on their toes and generally trips them the fuck out.

This is reminding me of back in 2008 when I was weirdly obsessed with the idea of starting a band that combined the best aspects of Funhouse era Stooges and Quad City DJs, but with vocals inspired by the first Brainticket LP:

 

 

I got as far as finding a willing hype man and getting a broken S-950 for free, but I didn't have the skills to repair the S-950 back then and then I moved to a different city and abandoned the whole idea.

 

Which isn't to say I haven't idly thought about things like a Quad City DJs inspired cover of Interstellar Overdrive as recently as this week because obviously I have, just not as seriously as I was that one time.

 

 

EDIT: what I'm getting at is that you should definitely see this plan of yours through.

it has a bit of an edging cocktease thing going on because no real drums ever seem to drop in. lotta build up. but it's all about the intent. it's clear this group had something very different in mind. which i like. theatrical almost.

Another strike against it was around the same time the drummer in the freeform space rock thing I was involved with at the time made an entire honey bear full of weed honey the afternoon before the prospective hype man sat in with us for the first time, drank like 1/3 of the honey, and then got so intensely paranoid that he was uncomfortable playing music with any of us again for about a year (which I didn't find out until years later - we were all loving what he was doing but the whole time he was tearing himself up inside about not being good enough to play with us and everyone secretly hating everything he did).

 

At any rate, it was never to be. I'm pretty sure I'm too old to pull of something like that now.

 

 

EDIT: jsut realized you were talking about the Brainticket, I'm still going on about my weird kind-of-joke project that never was.

 

Yeah, that album is amazing and that's only the second part of that track, the full thing is over 30 minutes long but they had to split it across two sides.  The whole album is amazing Swiss heavy psych, their later stuff is also good but the original lineup for the first album is the only one that feels DANGEROUS.

the reason i bring up the nu-metal thing like korn and such is because bands of that era succeeded in making 'pop' songs that were actually pretty genre-bending for the time and genuinely shook things up. didn't take long for that whole thing to become completely annoying and tossed into the dustbin of cringe but there was something definitely working for KORN and their ilk. i want to try and figure out that, but not rely on the schlocky shock elements of it because, well because, no.

I agree about Korn.  I was never in to them but a friend of mine who did a lot of ambient music 5 or 6 years ago turned me on to how interesting the actual guitar techniques on their eay albums are.  So I definitely respect them now even though it's not so much my thing, I'm always in to music that walks a line between pop and experimentalism without falling into either side, probably why I like so much first generation psych.

 

Ever hear this one? Industrial black metal with bagpipes from 1969, not even joking.

in my mind i have this fusion of the uncanny feeling of bauhaus with the discordant psychedelia of murray street, like karen revisited (the whole thing) and the total sonic violence of something like Z.N.S

whenever you get some of the songs recorded PM them to me and i'll add the music to various pornography videos and upload them across the internet (in appropriate pornographic areas of course) and this will help you become popular, famous, and above all associated with lots of sex.

I never actually fell in love with Sonic Youth (I know you're not supposed to say that but it's true - I even saw them live in 2002 and it was kind of dull) but I love Neubauten, and there's one Sonic Youth song I can't get enough of:

 

 

For that era I always leaned more toward the American Southwest, though.

here's an example of the cool overdriven reverbed fretless bass thing i was mentioning. this is just an off the cuff recording from my phone of me and my friend fucking about after a legit rehearsal. me trying to learn how to use the damned loop pedal. but like there are elements just in this bullshit recording that i can see being translated into this scheme of mine.

Scratch Acid were excellent, it was actually David Yow's band before Jesus Lizard (who I haven't listened to nearly as much, for no good reason really) but the story I always heard was that they broke up because it took them months to write one song so after 3 years they'd only done a couple of short EPs.

 

They actually did a reunion tour 5 or 6 years ago and I got to see them. It was absolutely as good as it could possibly be, they played their entire catalog in an hour , David Yow didn't quite take his pants off but threatened to a few times, and there was a literal silver haired old grandma in the pit the whole time.

I really want to post Kiss Freak Steven but nobody has put it online yet (except for some live footage that is interesting but doesn't even begin to hint at the brutal ridiculousness of the LP - it sounds like GG Allin covering Ice Cream For Crow era Captain Beefheart but slowed down to about 2/3 speed - the first time I played it I thought the album was supposed to go at 45 because their sound is just that sludgy) and I don't have time to do it myself. I know nothing about them, I found the record for $2 a decade ago and there's not much information about it.

At least somebody put the Sewer Zombies record on Youtube a while ago.  Not on the level of Kiss Freak Steven but pretty good in an unhinged 80 anti-music way.

 

The owner of the record shop where I used to work said that it was widely considered the worst album released by Ron Johnson Records.  We had a copy in the store's permanent collection and played it pretty regularly.
