RE the "Wuhan virus":

Wuhan virus preventable, controllable: commission

China's state media was calling it the Wuhan virus up until the WHO gave it the name SARS-CoV-2.

I prefer to call it by its given name now but I think the hysteria about calling it the "Wuhan virus" being racist is silly.

I haven't read anything complaining about people saying Wuhan virus. But calling it "Chinese virus" it's p shit (which trump did live on tv today)

Fortunately my wife is transitioning to work from home tomorrow. I really hope I don’t get her sick.

Hope you get well soon - I know if you’ve caught anything serious your last thought is going to be posting here but I’ll be watching this space to see if you have any updates.

cheers

Yeah Wuhan virus would be fine (unless used in bad faith). "Chinese" virus just sounds like dumb scurrilous hegemonic trash talk. An official White House tweet sooking about criticism of its COVID-19 terminology is also completely inappropriate to the office, but in the Trump era well...

For someone as involved at the moment as an American President, still calling it the "Chinese" anything this far along is obviously poor form. Maybe a month ago you could still get away with it, but it has been a global problem for a while now and is already better known among the populace as "coronavirus" or "COVID-19".

Of course there will be some petty campaigners who lurk and focus disproportionately on these things, but if you give them the fuel...

I talked to a doctor over the phone and he said they’d test me if they had enough tests to go around, but they don’t. If I get short of breath, I’m supposed to call to go to the ER.

really good discussion of COVID-19.  in general this guy's podcasts are extremely good (note, he's a marxist-leninist)

https://revolutionaryleftradio.libsyn.com/unlocked-coronavirus-contradictions-and-the-dictatorship-of-capital

Summary:

Things you should do:

-Offer free service to immunocompromised people to do their shopping etc

-Five demands for the government
    Free healthcare
    No work
    No paying and no debts
Suspending rent, mortgage payments, utility bills, loan repayments, foreclosures, evictions, and parking enforcement
Free everyone from jail (people who haven't been convicted yet and are being held until trial) and end bail requirements
    Deactivate ICE
Release detainees on the border in detention camps
Homes for all, open up unoccupied homes (there are many more than there are homeless people) to anyone who needs them .  Will free up tent cities which are at high risk

As a sort of wishy washy long time Kropotkin fan I'm skeptical of M-Ls but I'll check it out. Usually they're pretty much on the same page as me in the short to medium term, and beyond that everyone's jsut talking out their ass really because we never have any idea how things are actually going to turn out.

as someone who leans towards anti-authoritarian/ancom tendencies, ML leaves a bad taste in my mouth but I'm also uneducated on it, and note that at the end he does encourage people to withhold votes from Biden in favor of Gloria La Riva (Party for Socialism and Liberation, the largest US communist party which is also ML), take from that what you will, not sure about my take on it.  but the rest is spot on in my view

Anyway, if it makes everyone feel better I did some quick math and only around 0.002% of the world's population has been infected so far, and more than a third of them have already recovered.  So it's pretty rare in absolute numbers.  If I calculated right, the odds of actually catching and dying from it are about 1 in 825,000 right now.

OTOH a couple yeas ago my dad developed a rare autoimmune disorder that only about 1 in 1,200,000 people get so I'm not putting too much stock in odds.

Great! I'll forward your calculations to Italy. And tell them to stop worrying. Also to stop the lockdown immediately. The chance something happens is close to zero!

I'll be overjoyed if we can keep it around 1 death per mille in Western Europe alone. Never mind how badly Africa, for instance, could get ravaged while everyone else is dealing with their own issues.

No they want to shoot each other. A virus isn't going to change that.

You are wrong. A virus is going to change that in that they want to shoot each other even more now. You can't deny that's a change
