I don't see overcomplexity in their newer work, just a logical evolution of their older stuff and it's developing exactly into the right direction. Maybe you appreciate their 90s stuff more because you were young at that age plus it's a lot more accessible and followable. Would be a shame if they still made the same kind of tracks

True, some of their new stuff is just too random and structure-less for me.  It just sounds like the audio equivalent of modern art (which I hate).  a splotch of paint on a blue canvas etc..  I saw Autechre live in 99' and it was amazing.  Saw them a couple years ago and it honestly just sounded like any random set you might here from a guy noodling with his modular set up....completely disjointed and unstructured bleeps and bloops.  But I stand by my observation that younger people are really impressed by over the top complexity.  I used to be a little like that myself at one point.

Wish Autechre had carried on making tunes like this, and not switched to making ones that sound like someone trying to fix a broken clock while having an MRI scan

I second that.  This is arguably the best music they ever made IMO.  I honestly don't like much that they did after the 90's and their earliest material is the best....first few releases.  For me, over complexity has no place in music and only serves as a sort of novelty and takes away from/dilutes any real substance that might be present or potentially created.  I find that younger more inexperienced listeners are highly impressed by said novelty as is the case with many of the members of this and the Aphex Twin message boards.

  3. People saying that vinyl is naturally noisy is not true at all.  A brand new record or one kept in good condition should have zero surface noise such as crackles, pops etc..  It's not until a record becomes well worn, scratched up, not well cared for that it develops that kind of surface noise.

  4. I love this stuff but I'm secretly hoping the next full length album is a return to less chaotic rhythm and more easy listening melodies and synth. like ICBYD, or the analord series, or SAW 2. I want like an hour or two of just farty synth love, cottage tracks, notting hill buss, analord 8, analord 11. Don't even know, just want some chill melodies and vibes.

Would be nice.  In my opinion its far more bold and more challenging to create a really memorable, minimal piece of music than to do complex and virtuosic music.  I'm not even sure RDJ could recreate something like S.A.W II if he tried.  Music like that is almost more channeled than it is performed.

  5. I like new thing, but can we please go back to 20 year old thing

Once again you don't understand how music works.  Albums like S.A.W II, ICBYD ....actually all of Aphex Twin's early work is timeless.  It has nothing to do with when it was made.  Great music spans time and is appreciated by each new generation over and over again.  Where as the most "advanced and ground breaking new music" will be played out and dated far sooner.  The world top underground DJ'S are still playing Aphex Twins work from the 90's....they're not playing stuff from Druqks, Come To Daddy, Tuss etc..

I can't stand people who treat music like it's sports.

It's too bad the US arm of bleep's shipping packed these records up like shit.  No tissue, none of that weird cut paper padding, just a record strapped in a corrugated mailer.  Dings on my record corners, my friend's was crushed by fedex...

that's not good news to read.  Mine still hasn't shown up.  I pray to the acid gods.  Let it come to me properly.  Let it come to me.  Let it come.  I pray.

I'm in the U.S and my cassette came packed in that weird cut paper.

Got my cassette this morning on the way out the door to work.  Look forward to popping it in the Nakamichi when I get home.

which naks deck do you have, i have a 1000,paid £100 for it, bought it from a helicopter pilot instructor in england lol

Not familiar with that deck but a quick search shows certain versions of the 1000 series being sold on Ebay for several thousands of dollars.  If there were no issues with it the guy must have been really stupid to sell it for that.  Either that or he didn't take the time to look up what they go for and just figured it wasn't worth anything because it's old technology.  Which version is it, ZXL, II etc?

Mine is a BX-150 ....nothing near that range but many have said it performs incredibly for a two head deck.  Supposedly sounds as good as much more expensive 3 head decks.  At any rate it's the best sounding tape deck I've ever owned and I grew up on cassettes.

  8. Pthex reminds me of this tune, same eerie hoover sounding pads about a minute in:

Nitrous is one of the all time drum & bass anthems.  In what way do you figure Pthex sounds anything remotely close to being as rocking at Nitrous?

  9. Well I'm not a fan of footwork and trap is the worst, most generic, disposable pop garbage to ever happen to hip hop/rap, electronic music.  Haven't listened to the leak but please tell me Aphex Twin is not making fucking trap?

  10. I like this first track a lot.  Even though it's not my favorite style of his, it has something more to it than a lot of others in this vein.  From the moment it turns from the blissful intro to the more sinister mood is when it gets really good.

  11. Great, the disease of political correctness is now infecting WATMM. The guy is Japanese and said the word Jap....and somehow people are still carrying on about it and calling it racist? Get a fookin life.
