is it really a good thing becoming desensitized to this level of violence & horror? how many millions of people watched this episode all over the world? adults, teens, adolescents...

I worry about this myself. videogames included. I worry to what effect it has on the youth particularly. And if it has any correlation to the particular violent acts they commit. i.e. mass shootings and such.

there probably isn't any correlation, all the research done into it shows the opposite, violent crime has been trending downwards for a long time now. I guess it's possible that it could be going down faster if it wasn't for violent media, but there's no evidence to suggest that's the case.

Hmmm, I guess being in/around Detroit my whole life I don't see violent crime going down. There's a couple shootings a day here. And many other violent acts commited as well, Guess I'm looking at things from my environment and what I see on the news day in, day out. Just seems like people just don't give a fuck. Way more nowadays than when I was growing up. People are just quick to react, and react aggressively.

if the show went the other way not showing anything i'm sure there would be complaints.

i do find censorship in the US bizarre though. on a lot of films & tv especially, all the swear words & nudity is cut out where as violence is allowed. notice how there is no swearing in TWD or other shows. i remember watching a daytime version of goodfellas, all the violence was still in & all the swearing was dubbed out, lol

  2. The opening 10-15 mins was terrible, with those stupid flashbacks of each character trying to trick you into thinking it was them that got killed, should have just opened with the brutality. Teasing motherfuckers. The bit with Rick imagining everyone else getting their heads bashed in as a means to spur him into action was also pretty dumb. Once they finally showed the main attraction though, and then the bit after when they drove back from their dumb little jaunt, it was pretty good. The brain damaged blubbering with the eye popping out was really well done, I think they took that directly from the comic IIRC.

think the 2 sec flash backs were kinda effective, as they seemed sporadic & happening randomly but then got repetitive especially with the who could be next flashbacks later. yeah was a direct rip from the comic, eye pop & all so in a way there wasn't really a mystery as to who got killed

  3. I'm sad to say this but I'm done with this show now. I'm just completely uninterested at this point since there has barely been any progress in the overall story in the last few seasons. Just hopping from place to place, introducing new characters and killing them off later on... you could go like this forever.

I look back at the first 2 seasons and they felt really exciting and had me wondering where the story would go and how it could end, but it may just be nostalgia.

silly place to drop out as this is where everything changes in the story arc....well according to the comics which the show increasingly seems to be sticking too

  4. Oh shit, I really didn't plan it but I finally finished watching season 6 last night... Was getting quite into it again after giving up on it last year. Had no idea the new season would premiere last night!

Also: most of s6 was actually quite boring and/or meh but I just binged my way through it all in one week. It did have about two decent episodes overall?

theres a lot of slow pacing to the show, which i actually like rather then being an action film the whole way through, but yeah s7 just started, would watch it soon before spoilers which are all over the web now

I tuned into the season premier last night. I thought I must have tuned in late, because the bat-to-brain bashing already took place. Nope, I realized the show was going to reveal the death later in the episode. The showrunners said the show was going to pick up right with the death explicitly! You lying motherfuckers. They fooled me again. Nope, no more twisting of my nipple Walking Dead. I turned this fucking show off after the opening credits & ain't looking back. My dueces are up. Peace.

    :/

watched it over breakfast before seeing spoilers online as the show tends to divert from the source material, covering a room dimensional spluttering out cornflakes & milk..kinda knew what was coming but still pretty sad about it :( but glad the show took it further then it just being a token scene, can't really go in depth cos of spoilers

  7. yeah that's why i said this show isn't for me.

it's interesting because now when i think about it, stranger things has a more old school approach to science fiction where everything is more from a child's perspective and thus looked upon with wonder and amazement whereas westworld comes with a more modern arrogance whereas things are taken as is with characters exchanging moments when they can upstage and one up each other with their smarts.

i even found the intro annoying

yeah the theme music :cerious: not really sure what that is or meant to be ... its sadly fallen into being a pretty generic tv show quite fast, hoping it can wakeup as was excited 4 this. feel its just gone over the same material for 3 epis now & in this 'super high tech world' we only hear about the other worlds, although sure they must pop up in the future. any how the rock head thing at the end was kinda lol although pissed he didnt go for the other (trying to avoid spoilers) as that would of sped things up a tad, .....anyway walking dead premiere soon  :catnope:

3 episodes are away from finishing the series^^

been taking my time with this one. have to be in the right mood or I find myself not paying attention.

I did this as well. Just finished it last night. Watched almost non stop then my wife, my 1 year old son, and I moved so we put off the last few episodes for months until we were settled in the new house. Then we held off until we were on vacation in Cloudcroft, NM. Appropriately it is a very sleepy mountain town with a very Twin Peaks-y vibe.

The jarring end was something I kind of expected but was still a bit shocked by it's abrupt cliffhanger.

I kind of knew it was coming when the bank scene dragged on hilariously for what seemed like a quarter of the episode. I was also worried it'd be a Bob Newhart ending where Cooper wakes up and is like "What a weird dream!" and Harry and Hawk find Annie and everything is a-ok. So the toothpaste Bob mirror meltdown was a better alternative to a rushed resolution.

The intensity of the black lodge scene was payoff though. That line "See you in 25 years" gave me chills...I had no idea that the new season corresponded with that!

So besides watching Fire Walk With Me is there anything else I should check out before the new season? I was skimming the internet and this thread and apparently there were some books and deleted/missing scenes released as well...

Besides Fire Walk With Me with all the deleted scenes, there is one book that a few people recommended in here but I still haven't read that (forgot the title, but it's a few pages back on here). However, there is going to be an official book about the history of Twin Peaks, written by Mark Frost himself, coming out in 50 days:

Yeah posted the trailer for it a while back

  9. Not strictly true in my opinion...those of us who remember the old British Rail can attest that it was a hell of a lot worse than it is now and that it has only got better in the last couple of decades. It is not really "decades behind" other countries networks, although there are serious improvements to be made - currently prices are way too high for example, and the whole Southern Rail debacle has been caused by poor management and wasted revenue. I believe that the right balance between private and public investment needs to be found with the focus moved away from immediate profit towards long term gain for both travelers and the companies running things.

but the focus 'for immediate profit' is only one of the symptoms due to privatisation & most of the time the various, regular changing, companies aren't working together, (if anything against each other) so there is major mis-communication between etc causing delays, from upgrading tracks, signal lights & trains to waiting for a train & no information for passengers etc pretty much everything you stated is due to privatisation

but yeah agree a balance between both is prob a realistic way forward now as its gone in one direction for too long now, although a complete overall could also be a solution

also have you heard of maglev trains?  :dadjoke:

  10.

i've been on that train service going north over the years many times also from the time there was a smoking carriage, (so grim lol)  & had to sit & stand in the corridor etc, although more recently have been more lucky & making sure to reserve a seat.

one thing i find really annoying is the amount of carriages dedicated to first class which are usually pretty much empty,

if you read the full article you realise he isn't lying due to a witnesses account, &  wholly agree with him privatisation really fucked the uk rail system, as its always changing hands & companies & its arguable decades behind other rail networks, which haven't been privatised in other countries

Believing in UFO's and aliens is the modern iteration of religious thinking. Gods, angels and magic has been replaced by aliens and advanced technologies. They also offer the "saviour" aspect and prophets (abductees).

but aliens are more plausible than god lol

that's true. it probably fits better with the secular humans plausibility structures. still serves the same function. i believe that there is other life out there, some of it perhaps advanced, but don't believe that we will ever come across any.

this is what i was asking about tabby's star, arguably the most reliable evidence at the mo of an advanced civilisation that we know of. with distances in space its not surprising we haven't discovered, or yet been discovered, but again many would disagree with that.

not a modern  phenomenon at all, the belief as been going on before most 'modern' religions- christianity, islam etc
