  1.

i had a dream once that i was wandering around at some random music festival in europe and saw tom jenkinson weaving his way away from the stage through a crowd of people alone. i excitedly went over to get his attention and then proceeded to ask him if parts of 'numbers lucent' were randomly generated or not (something i had been thinking about probably due to how strange it sounds, and the name itself (i can be a bit obsessive about music)). anyway, he promptly grabbed me by both of my shoulders and started violently shaking me and screaming "IT'S ALL RANDOM". and then i woke up.

Baha, that's awesome. I met (read: ambushed) Tom in Seattle when he played there in 2004. I had just stuck like three pieces of Bubblicious in my mouth, so I could barely speak. I told him to have a good show, and he said, "Well, there's quite a lot of random elements..." Good times.

  2. I really wonder what Aphex would do with the current standar electronic music set up. Ya know, logic, huge banks of samples, the massive softsynth, with all the other popular plug-ins... but now in the hands of Richard. Pretty sure my mind would explode. He has sort of made things hard for himself with all the hardware (very respectable and has obvious benefits) But him working with something "easy" I imagine the most beautifully complex thing imaginable popping out.

Imagining all the dope 'Shops Leonardo could have produced is almost enough to make you weep.

Yeah, I'm getting slightly tired of this recurring discussion. :) Sounds like everyone on here knows what a great mastering is, except Aphex Twin. How this album sounds to you is so subjective to your own experience, it has almost nothing to do with the album itself. What Aphex should release is the informations about his own audio setup so that people can hear his album the way he hears it. I'm pretty sure that by then, the same people would start complaining about Aphex Twin's quality of hearing, arguing that he should let other people hear how his music sounds before releasing it.

Only slightly tired? Allow me to expound. JK.

I don't see why the mastering of an album should be a taboo subject, though. Of all of the aspects of a recording, signal quality (in terms of spectrum, dynamic range, etc.) is among the least subjective and most easily compared. Don't make me produce an "Inconvenient Truth"-esque hockey stick graph of RMS loudness from ABB to Syro. Because I'll fucking do it.

  4. We need a kickstarter to get Rich/Warp to release the pre-master WAVs. I've noticed I really prefer listening to this album on headphones. It just doesn't sound as good on my speakers, which are somewhat decent. Maybe there's a lot of subtle phase shit that glues it together. Maybe the album was produced and mixed mostly on headphones, more so than earlier works? I dunno. The waveforms don't lie, though. They do not lie.

  5. Yeah it made me listen to Drukqs more and the tuss less

I've blasted Rushup Edge a few times since the release. Still sounds pretty dope to me. It has an aesthetic purity/focus that's rather remarkable. Dat Drukqs, though. Still the pinnacle of recorded music, in my opinion. Glad to see that it's more Dark Side of the Moon than The Wall, if you catch my drift.

  6. I started listening on shuffle pretty early on. When I get the urge to cue up a particular track (which is not infrequently), it's generally something from the second half. All the tracks are great, but the second half is definitely my fix. I've also gotten a lot of satisfaction from folding Syro into the typical ADDJ rotation. Heightened enjoyment and appreciation all around. Syro has magnified my love for Drukqs, making me seriously rethink the feasibility of polyamorous relationships. If it feels good, do it.

  7. Kai is coming to Houston soon; I might have to go talk to him about that!

To be clear, the quote was from one of their correspondents. Wouldn't be surprised if it illicits one of Kai's signature asides, though.

  8. Heard a preview for Marketplace on the radio this morning that had something along the lines of "...a record sold on eBay recently for $36,000, and it's not even that uncommon" (emphasis added). You know you've made it when Kai Ryssdal is talking about your shit.

  9. The S5000 is the bee's knees. I have one with USB, which is handy. But I think the best feature (or at least my favorite) is that it uses DOS-formatted floppies, which makes it easy to load a few short samples without firing up ak.Sys. Pretty much the only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't seem to have cyclic time stretch, only more "intelligent" algorithms that I don't find particularly useful. But then, I mostly stick to a couple of drum kits which each fit on a floppy... Oh, dual MIDI I/O is kinda nice, too.

As for the S6000, I suppose the detachable screen might be handy, but it adds 1U of height to an already bulky unit. It might make sense if you keep the thing buried in a big rack, but in your typical bedroom setup the practical benefit might be slim to nil.

  10. I dunno man, it works fine.

Just razzin' ya. I have an A3000 and the hard disk currently installed is a beast - so noisy. I don't think the mount has any dampening or anything. It's a shame that SCSI compact flash readers are so expensive...

  11. @new place, nothing fancy but it has everything I need.. I'm getting a harddisk for the sampler this week, the one that I have now makes more noise then my computer.

Are your ears on backwards or something? "All the top producers mix with their backs to the monitors."

  12. I was gonna give you shit about shamefully buying a Gaia and shamelessly posting a picture of it, but then I listened to the track in your signature and found it to be surprisingly decent... Really took the wind out of my sails.

  13. What's in the gray Roland case on the right?

    You mean this thing?

I'm not really sure. I just got it because it has Moby's signature on it. And ain't you folks ever seen green tea before? If I was pissin' out that shade, posting images of my 'rig' to I.D.M. n00bz would be the least of my concerns.

And hat, I believe those are 'active sense' messages, which are supposed to prevent stuck notes in the event that the connection between the keyboard and whatever else is suddenly terminated. For me, it's mostly just a petty annoyance to always have the MIDI status lights on my interface blinking. Still, can't beat the keyboard for the price! Two bucks at the thrift shop. They were pretty common for a while. Had mine for years. Even picked one up for a friend. As a rule, I buy anything I find at the thrift stores that has MIDI ports on it.
