    perfect match.

  2. Well, if the issue is not the fact that DR made it (so you should collect it) and you really like this japanese style ink on paper, I suggest you take Bokusho calligraphy lessons.
It is a "Glitch" version of the traditional japanese calligraphy with sometimes fascinating results and always great fun.
In Bokusho it is very common to make at some point a circle to "prove" what you've learned. Here is mine, FOR FREE, haha.

makes me super curious on which version they'll elaborate this year... if any rly: didn't sean say they're stitting on 6 hours worth of live set stuff or something?

also is it just me or is his visualizer tune sprinkled in these here n there? i mean this one:

oh, thank god for the "visualizer" tune. how many times I've let it just play endlessly, particularly when I'm not in the mood to listen to "music"

  4. For me it is a surprise how different the soundboard sounds than what I expected. I was at the Athens show and, the sound being quieter than it should be due to the fucking venue, I was hearing things that are there of course, but in completely different levels. For example, the part from 43:48 to 46 felt like a rave anthem to me. Here, the "rave" part is barely audible. Same for the last 20 minutes, I was hoping for a different headphone experience, but it stills kicks ass anyway.
By the way, I cut a loop from the bootleg recording to do this video loop just for fun. I finally have it now in full HD. It is the part in Athens live from 48:25 to 48:32:100 (attached).

I'd instantly buy a black t-shirt with the ae logo black on black, just with a varnish so that it is barely visible...
And a quaristice shirt would be dope as well like that...

William is far from a clown, and his arguments sound very reasonable to me… not one of those  “I know better” arguments you refer to.

and there is a follow up to the tweet. I just asked if the setting makes sense in a sophisticated studio environment maybe...

yeah. it's wicked. it's autechre doing autechre. it sounds new to me. lot's of new designs. lot's of subtle stuff and spacial stuff. listened in the studio a bunch. sounds killer in there.

out of curiosity, what is your input on this?

I consider them albums. Ae albums are collections of tracks which belong together and are longer in duration than singles/eps.

Although I must add that I consider EP7 to be an album as well. Rather than an EP. Too much music for an ep, imo. And stands on its own legs as an album in their entire discography, imo.

The live sets however are just that.

stands on its own legs is an understatement. easily top-3 in their discography personally

  8. I don't get the 2nd Barbican show. I almost traveled to London for that, because I needed one more (and louder) fix after the Athens gig, but I'm glad I didn't from what I've heard.
It sounds too "normal" for my taste. Hopefully the soundboards will prove me wrong and reveal some depth in the sounds that I'm missing.

On the other hand, I've listened to the Helsinki gig about a zillion times and I find myself skipping the first 25 minutes, although it is a very nice build up the first time you listen to it.
Depending on the mood, I start at 25:00 or 35:00 minutes in. And it's one of the best things I've ever heard from the guys, absolutely amazing stuff!

Anxiously waiting for the Athens soundboard, because I remember it been even more satisfying than the Helsinki one, 45 minutes onwards...

So, back to last Sunday; I went to Musiikkitalo early so I could catch Ilpo Väisänen, and wasn't disappointed. Väisänen's half-hour set was choc full of raw drones and pulsing rhythms, deceptively minimalistic but by no means simple. There was an intermission between Väisänen and Autechre, so I got to meet some people I hadn't seen in quite a while. When Autechre started, the concert hall lighting was dropped to only necessary, meaning emergency exit lights only. The live started off hard and continued for most of the set with the same energy, at least up until the venue's sound system glitched out and major sound malfunctions started, which were semi-promptly attempted to be addressed, but the venue's system wasn't having it and almost a third of the set was plagued with sound problems and hard glitchy snaps (like needle pops on a vinyl scratches, deep ones). A friend of mine knows the audio people from the venue, and the gist of it is that the sound system just couldn't handle Autechre's sound - a lot of the speakers that were used will need to have components changed, subwoofers had been limited extremely hard (17dB) and the venue's brand new Optocore system's clock had drifted - so it was a systemic meltdown. Nevertheless, I stayed for the full duration (some people promptly exited when the problems started, but not necessarily due to them); the set was interesting enough, Autechre's sound design is always impeccable, but at times I was... bored. There was no dramatic arc to speak of, but a continuous pummeling of rhythmic pulses and sparkling high-end twinkles, lacking well nigh all harmonic or melodic sounds and phrases. Autechre is still in a league of their own, no-one does what they do with the intensity and skill they have, but I actually liked Väisänen's set better - and not because of the PA trouble.

Looking forward to hearing the soundboard recordings from the tour, can't be arsed to listen to external ones. I would think the Helsinki recording is intact because the problems weren't with Autechre's equipment, so it can be heard in full glory when released.

In Athens show too, it was a continuous pummeling for 30+ minutes and the first kind of phrases that, at least, I could follow were introduced at the 40 minute mark approximately.
From then on it was a banger and, the conclusion was super satisfying and emotional. I think that, unfortunately, the technical problems at the Helsinki gig didn't let the boys round it up properly.
It was very Sun-Ra as an approach to a live gig, I think. But the problem in Athens was the generally low volume level.
I wish the next tour sees them back in proper club venues for standing people only.

  10. So, it turns out I was correct. At some point I said to my girlfriend "This is surely way over 1 hour they're playing already, right?".

But I didn't want to check my phone and break the "zone". But the fuckery started at 21:50 and when it was all over I checked my phone an it said 23:10.

I am still trying to gather my thoughts for a follow up post about the last 20 minutes of the show, which were my favourite Ae moment ever (I was drunk as well)!
