To each hir own, but I'll never understand the urge to twiddle knobs after the 'chre have put their stamp on it.  Into the fan fiction bin it goes with stereo differences, 45>33 versions and lush nulls :sorcerer:

Wonder if this clown even stopped to consider for a second that whatever "sounds much better" (to him) might not apply to others, might just have something to do with the playback system/environment, or that his mastering abilities might not be superior to whoever did it for Shah/Raj-approved release.

William is far from a clown, and his arguments sound very reasonable to me… not one of those  “I know better” arguments you refer to.

I think Helsinki set was their weakest this year.
The Barbican set and Barcelona set sounds way better (specially later set of Barbican)

It's becoming pretty boring with the Max/Msp drones and just random weird noises.
We want them crazy gritty Autechre glitchy beat violence oooooooiii !!!

If that thing on the Helsinki official recording is weak I can’t imagine how good the London shows must have been…

  3. The primavera set I attended, the Helsinki soundboard recording and the snippets from Barbican, all seems to indicate they have finally realized the  “live set as a complete real time generated album” concept. So much detail, so much ambience and naunce and variety on every set… I personally can’t wait for the soundboard recording for all these concerts, it’s already for me the most interesting Autechre period by far, they’re the Miles Davis or Can for this age.

  4. This recommendation may seem totally unrelated to Autechre but some days ago I had the chance to see the Netherlands Dans Theater contemporary dance company in Barcelona and I have to say I have never experienced such a feeling of absurdity, strangeness and wonder (that feeling of recognizing the elements but seeing them working in a totally unexpected way) as watching Bedroom Folk live, except from a handful of artists such as Autechre or Lynch:

The preview doesn’t make it justice at all.
Me and my partner looked at each other afterwards not really understanding what we have just seen but knowing it has been extraordinary for sure. Check them out in Europe, I think they are touring or something.

Sean always shits on traditional music composing, he even said Trackers are fascist bullshit lol

You are cool and all that Sean but everyone doesn't have your brain

In my opinion it’s more related to them being “drum machine kids” (his words) and starting doing music that way and thinking on loops more than being smart (although he clearly is).

  6. Also, the way some sounds mutate in space, shape and timbre is on another entire level to anything I had heard before, save for musique concrète (except this is live music and not tape manipulation!)

    Ae Live 2022 review:

      Hide contents

Very surprised, which isnt much of a surprise considering its Ae. The closest live set they had to this in terms of structure etc. is probably Oversteps Live. It feels like a strange (in a good way) integration of Oversteps Live into Max mixed with their more recent sounds. Really liked it, very dancable overall, my legs couldnt stop moving. Spotted some bits of ecol4. Love the intro a lots and pretty weird, not what I was expecting when I saw that they are playing in seated venues only. Overall definitely more abstract and recent Ae, drum and percussion heavy, with very strange sounds that seem to dance on the fine edge of you dont really know whats a texture, drum sound, synth or fx anymore. Not much space to breathe though, it just straight up rattles for an hour. At first glance I dont like it more than onesix but this is no way a complaint. Ae still at their finest.

I agree with your review pretty much. But I do think is their best set yet from them, precisely because of that feeling of not knowing anymore what’s texture rhythm harmony or melody. Also the mix was something peculiar very related to SIGN in that’s there is layers and layers of important content buried down. This one really needs a soundboard recording for second listen on headphones

  8. WOW, thank you very much, will take some time off to read it in depth.

No pressure but, as a Max/MSP student nowadays myself, that part of the feature would be great to have! ?

  9. Oslo is one the best live albums I've heard in the last 25 years, on any genre, period. Amazing, really amazing, sutile, powerful.

Also lovely the Drane2 ghost at the end of the set.

Honest thanks to s&r, this album has convinced and motivated me to start my own journey making music on my late 30s. Fuck.
