Pitchfork Gives Music 6.8                              (The Onion)

“Coming in at an exhausting 7,000 years long, music is weighed down by a few too many mid-tempo tunes, most notably ‘Liebesträume No. 3 In A-Flat’ by Franz Liszt and ‘Closing Time’ by ’90s alt-rock group Semisonic,” Schreiber wrote. “In the end, though music can be brilliant at times, the whole medium comes off as derivative of Pavement.”

    ...

“It’s elitism for the sake of elitism,” said Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke, who refuted Pitchfork’s middling rating, describing the entire art form as “transcendent.” “I’ve been listening to music for over 30 years, and it’s consistently some of the best stuff out there.”

“overwrought, masturbatory posturing intended to make insecure hipsters feel as if they’re part of some imagined elite beau monde.” is a line I use a lot.

Occasionally enjoyed a hatewank hour listening to the top rated albums, made me feel superior

  2. It's not appropriate when your star sign/circadian rhythm is in the stimulant house, nor the narcotic house. But betwixt these two, when a perceptual change is needed, when your head is full of fuck, it's viable.

Some people were born a whisky short. Others need a spliff to become stone cold sober. Me, I lack drive. Weed ain't gonna fuck with that

exactly! hihats @11/8, kick@ 7/8, snare @14/8... infinite combos, honestly I've always thought about doing it but like the list I've posted I probably never end up doing it...

I guess it's about enforcing constraints, and playing instruments as opposed to programming - I'm no drummer so writing in this kind of way I find a little frustrating. But tapping out a rhythm in sixes instead of typically fours is unintuitive enough to make me think differently and change what kind of bass lines and melodies to create.

I obviously love listening to all the clattercore and awkward riddims of the braindance artists, but most things I listen to are much less rhythmically complex. Writing music in that way isn't as cathartic to me, and I don't have a good enough sense of how to combine time signatures without making a hot mess.

Although I've got a rhythm trainer app on my phone that might help

  4. Learn a bit of theory to put into practice, stuff like progressions, modulations, so when I write music, I come at it from a different angle than just jamming.

I've been thinking for a while about setting myself some rules to compose rather than just noodling. Make all my drums in 6/4. Use the microtonal scale which I mapped 12 notes of a keyboard to 12 equal divisions of a perfect 5th.

  5. I always just made music too, using reason/samplers etc. I'd tried DJing vinyl in my teens but found it less fun and unintuitive but 20 years later I got rekordbox and it's much more fun and easy.

Set it up with 4 decks, upload all your stems on there and i find it's a lot more straightforward to mix than trying to use a daw

There’s lots of ai websites, software/apps that let you separate vocals and drums and such but what is the best … and easiest way to do it?

really want to make some instrumentals out of my favourite tracks.

I've been using lalal.ai , I've got some spare credits so DM me a couple of tracks if you want

Cowbell is one of the tropes in these tracks as well, I think maybe it’s mapped to the keyboard?

Oh yeah I see now, it's a cowbell mapped to a keyboard, mad how a little grid pattern like that arises and becomes a music meme, like the hihats in trap.

can you hear the similarity to dancehall? like 2 or 3 basic riddims make up a lot of the tracks.

On the Jdm drift Saint-Petersburg//Phonk video (track is What the Fuck by Rhodamine) I like how the beat sits about 90bpm but the keyboard makes it feel much more like 180, really drives it before I even think about the redline distortion. Its almost as if the keyboard is doing the hihats job

  9. I've run into a  problem I've never had before, there's a song that I can't find either digitally or physically

MF Doom sampled it, it's from this

But I want the full song, not the first couple of bars as sampled, or the song with the dialogue over the top

I bought the Fat Albert Halloween Special vinyl, but it's just a straight rip from the cartoon, with the dialogue over the top

Apparently it's by Ray Ellis, although according to imdb

    Music by

Ray Ellis ... (as Yvette Blais)
Norm Prescott ... (as Jeff Michael)

who can help me? Find me the whole clean song and I'll give you money

It also made me interested in other songs that are so hard to find, but must exist

  10. DJ just download rekordbox, honestly it's dead easy, don't worry about it, if you can use a computer you can mix records now, it's not really a skill any more, ok..now you just have to download the update, have you got your tunes on MP3, no I don't think there's going to be good enough signal at the rave to stream, you can't just play a SoundCloud mix, well I think there's an option to do that but you should just buy the tunes you like, they're only a few quid, or use soulseek or whatever but you should support the artists right, anyway are you sure the usb cable is plugged in, maybe you need to download some new drivers, it might be Windows update, no hold on let's try another cable, right I think that's it, do you know what a cross fader is, or you can use the volume controls, same difference, I wouldn't press the flange button that often, less is more, right, yeah you can just lock it to a loop, as many or as few bars as you want, bars are like a measure of how many beats, like it's usually four but it could be another number, don't worry about that now, no don't make the loop that short, ok yeah you can spin it back like it's a real record, no don't keep doing it, once is enough, just press the sync button, I wouldn't keep cutting the tracks before the drop, or actually in fact maybe that's good, but stop breathing like that it'll make you feel really strange, and stop making that big face
