  1. I listened to nimnim because I didn't realize that was on older post. I really love how odd it sounds. I don't think I've ever heard anything quite like that, especially the use of what sounds like woodwind instruments.

Outremer felt repetitive to me, but that's probably just because I wasn't feeling the melody that much.

I like the progression to cave habitat, and the offputting feeling to the whole track.

I think you've got a unique sound that helps you stand out.

  2. I wish I was having a breakthrough. Lately, I'm having more of a cracking-through.

Anyway, the intro to Universal Grammar instantly had me bopping my head. I enjoyed how playful you were with seemingly every element that made up this track. Too long for my liking, but I feel that way about almost any song I hear.

I wasn't feeling Hyperobject that much until the odd switch-up in the middle. I was disappointed that that little section didn't last longer, but I'm a sucker for half-time beats so I still enjoyed the part that followed. I particularly liked the eerie melody that crept in at the very end, and I would like if the track featured more of that, but on the other hand, maybe it's best to leave it as it is so that part really stands out. Also, I think I would have appreciated the track more if the strange noises and textures were more loud/harsh/intense.

Giedi Prime might be my favorite of these tracks. I really like the half-time switch up near the middle, the little melody that starts repeating at that part, and the playful cuts and rhythms you were doing with the vocal samples that went on throughout that section.

i mean recording acoustic instruments with microphones or digital keyboards via midi. Basically meaning producing complete works by recording/arranging. Typically this would be in a computer using a DAW but could also be on a digital recorder or tascam tape deck.

Yeah, I think I see what you're saying. The problem is, what usually happens is that I can't play/record what I have in mind properly, so I end up falling back into the "practice spiral" again, if that makes sense.

maybe just approach music from a different angle. if you are burnt out on practicing/performance maybe try composing or getting into recording etc.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly by "recording," but I have been composing to a certain extent for most of my life. It definitely is less stressful for me to do that than it is to practice and to try to get the best take recorded. So, I think I understand and agree with your point.

  5. I feel bad for taking so long to respond. I've been trying to change some things in my life and the last week has been hectic, to say the least.

You could try working on a studio album not meant to be performed live

I'm kind of doing I really love this concept and I made it a point to put it into my notes so I don't forget it. I really appreciate it man.that right now, actually. I'm not writing as much as I want from myself, but I'm definitely writing more than before.

Always end your practice session (especially the gruelling ones) with something fun that you're really good at. This way your last memory of the session will be more positive, vs walking away in frustration or whatever.

Inspiration and re-sparking passion can come from unexpected places and notably across mediums. Reading a good book or poetry or looking at artwork might reignite musical ideas.

I think I've experienced exactly what you're talking about. Maybe I should try checking out other art forms.

You don't want it to become a chore though, or something that has to be crossed off your to-do list or whatever.

Yeah, the problem is that once I discover a melody that I like, it often becomes a chore to learn to play it as skillfully as I imagine it should sound. (Hopefully, that makes sense.) I have fun discovering different melodies and possibilities, but actually playing those passages properly? That's a different story.

If it's practice that's getting you down, maybe just make it simpler. Practice slower. Practice scales in front of the tv. Play the same thing a hundred times over. Turn yourself into a robot that practices exactly an hour every day and don't expect any results until after at least a month.

So what if you're mediocre? That *why* you practice.

Practicing more slowly has actually become EXTREMELY important to me, that and playing more softly/smoothly.

The issue I have with playing "the same thing a hundred time over" is that it makes me start to loathe playing my instrument. Instead of spending most of my time with my instrument having fun, I'm mostly just doing boring exercises. Which is normal, I think, but I hate that it often makes me view my instrument as a piece of laborious work-out equipment instead of a fun toy. (If that makes any sense.)

Take a small break to give you the opportunity to miss creating, collaborate with friends or other people or try creating something new and different from what you currently have been.

You're not mediocre man you're just bored maybe and are in need of something refreshing!

I appreciate it, but I'm afraid I actually am quite mediocre. And it's funny that you've suggested the things that you have, because I've actually JUST started doing two of those things very recently, and I think they might actually be helping.

  9. Over the last year, I've been losing interest in a lot of things. That includes music. Because of this, my skills have deteriorated to a point where I can't play things that I've written over a year ago. ( for example: https://on.soundcloud.com/T7rmG ) When I try to practice them, I just get frustrated and depressed and I give up.

If practicing my instruments is causing me so much stress, I guess the obvious solution would be to just stop, but I've spent too much of my life learning my instruments to just give up now. I just can't seem to let myself do that. So I'm stuck in this limbo of mediocrity that I can't figure out my way out of.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar? If so, how did you handle it?

  10. I finally got around to updating this one:

I did think the melody could have a little more atmosphere around it, and maybe a little more distortion to soften the high frequencies(I always loved Sound Toys Radiator for things like this).

I tried out Radiator and liked it enough to keep it in. I used the preset called "Drive In."

    What do you guys think?

I think something you could play with in this track is the Shepard Tone. You could try it with pluck and the lead that's already there, then maybe add another element above the lead. Or, you could double the lead in various ways in the bass and high mids. Or, add some ambient using this effect.

I've never heard of that before. I think I'll give it a shot, but who knows if I'll be able to make it fit into the track.

What I'm hearing in my mind is a cello at the bottom or something similar playing a bass line. It could come in close to the ending (at 1:20) and play long notes, but also do something melodic, so you'll feel it as a new element. Then it could be time to silence some things... maybe give the bells a break. That could open up space for some variation, maybe that would be a good place to go nuts with the drums.

Yeah, I think I like the idea of freeing up some space to put more focus on the rhythmic section. I'll also try out the cello idea too.

I'd also bring down the volume of the bells overall - just a smidge.

I need to do some automating on those. They're either too quiet or too loud sometimes, so I just settled on loud since they are playing the main melody.

That cello is very nice. Hope I got the instrument correct lol. This riff was quite nice too. What synth were you using for the orchestral elements?

At :020 (if that's the part you mean) I'm using the CineStrings Solo library.

  12. I found this a few days ago, and freshened it up a bit. I'm thinking I'm gonna add some reversed bell sounds in there, and really try some various ideas with the percussion. Honestly, though, I'm kind of afraid I'm gonna just make it worse. I'm hoping that hearing some suggestions will get me feeling creative enough to play with this some more. What do you guys think?

Nice! The beat repeat on that snare sounds pretty good. I would adjust it a little bit tho, seems a little bit off sometimes.

    Loved the ending!

    I really appreciate it!
Somehow I didn't see your comment until now. Yeah, that beat definitely still needs some work.

Wow! I used to love listening to that record every day. Now that you've brought it up, I think I'm gonna have to put it back in my rotation.

Do you think more reverb would do the trick?

I might try that to see how it sounds. I'll have to look into that "Radiator" thing. Honestly, I'm so happy with how this track turned out, that I'm afraid to touch anything. But I think I'm gonna give these ideas a shot.

    Thanks for the feedback guys!
