  1. 10kdays felt more like tool parodying itself.

that's what i've always felt about it, so i was extremely disappointed when i waited for so damn long to get an album with about 3 good tracks on it. maynard definitely seemed to phone in the lyrics on it too, which was pretty uncool.

so i would say i'm more interested in seeing what's next but not really excited. i would love for tool to end out their career on a much better album than 10k days; they're too good of a bad to quit on a dud.

  2.

once again, ae shows that they are the masters of album closers. the recks on/YJY UX combo is beyond amazing.

    agreed, it's really nice

    >

this whole album is going to take a lot of time to settle in, but this kicks the shit out of oversteps

nah...apples and oranges. Quit slagging oversteps you un-subtle beat junkies, lol

i don't mean to totally discount oversteps, this album still lies directly in oversteps shadow; exai seems to take the best parts out of the three past LPs and melds them into something so much greater than the summation of past experiments

  3. musically, hello everything is tops. but just juxtapose planetarium with, say abacus 2. in fact pt many of of favorite songs for HE on a mix cd with other contemporaneous tracks of that era. the HE tracks wiill stand out in a much more muddy and somewhat offputting way. this has happened to me lately, and uite frankly pissed me off condering that HE is really the apex of his songwriting abilities

  4. Music is Rotted One Note is very different from his other records. Its absract and jazzy. But it has this beautiful piece:

also i feel like mentioning that this tune is one of my all time favorite to listen to in the transition of summer to autumn. it just feels right

totally agree. everytime i listen to "my sound", i just envision a group of musicians languidly beginning a jam in a small cramped room, slowly gaining confidence as the rhythms begin to tighten, and then exploding into mutual confident understanding as the bass guitar strides towards the end of the song. brilliant song.

  5. although there is hardly an sp album i don't love, hello everything has to be my absolute favorite. rotate electrolyte is really just top notch, possibly my favorite song of his. not to mention numbers lucent, dear jesus... heliacal torch is fucking epic.

it's just a shame that hello everything sounds TERRIBLE in terms of sound production. seriously, what was he thinking? how do you go from ultravisitor & square window (which sound at least good in production terms) to such a noisy, unbalanced, high-mids sound?

  6. and tom addresses the steinvord fiasco here: http://digboston.com...w-squarepusher/

Lastly, do you know anything about this mysterious artist off of Rephlex known as Steinvord?

TJ: What’s the name of the artist?

Steinvord. It’s supposedly a pseudonym for a mixture of two of yours and Richard D. James’s tracks ("Steinbolt" and "Vordhosbn").

TJ: No—I mean, nothing I could say about it in public, no. [Laughs] But in all honesty, what can I say? Nothing.

    well that clears everything up...

i personally still don't care. good to great tracks, person(s) behind them totally unimportant

  7. how did people 'discover' steinvord, anyway? I mean, someone had to have been checking random myspace pages and came across this. unless it was posted somewhere else first

I have wondered about this too...I remember reading somewhere that his tracks were first passed around here at watmm, also read about someone who claimed to know him, said he made music with the shittiest equipment imaginable...

i think that whole "shittiest equipment imaginable" comment sounds like some prototypical rdj-style hyperbole there. but yeah i do remember seeing that on the internet somewhere as well. wouldn't really take it all that serious

  8. looks like a windowlicker poster in the tool loft...

Is that a bass pedal synth on the far right?

Someone once told me he plays the bass synth on... whatever that really long track is at the end of Lateralus... is it Reflection? Anyway... pretty sure it was my brother who told me, and he tells me a lot of shit that isn't true, so I dunno. But I guess the drums in that track are relatively speaking a bit simpler so maybe it would't be a problem for Carey to play drums and synth at the same time.

don't think it would be danny playing that part. would guess it probably either adam or even maynard.

  9. amber

    lp5

    untilted

    quaristice

    tri repetae

    chiastic slide

    incunabula

    oversteps

    confield

    draft 7.30

after doing this, i noticed this looks a right mess keeping in mind the chronological order. pretty positive about the top four, but tri rep and chiastic slide could get some slight reordering based on mood. as for the rest, i don't get confield despite repeated retries & draft is pretty shit other than reniform puls. ep7,cichisuite, and anvil vapre beat the pants off the bottom 3, imo.

  10. Even with shitey Fermium Untilted is the best.

still can't comprehend the fermium hate. if any song on that album had to go, the trees would be my candidate. just seems to go nowhere, while fermium has an sick buildup throughout the whole track

  11. I pre-ordered the Storm Corrosion deluxe edition box a few days back. A new project by Steven Wilson and Mikael Åkerfeldt.

It's the whole god damn deal. Double vinyl, Blu-ray and CD bundle. Now I only need the cassette and I'm all set.

holy hell, didn't know this existed. must listen now.

  12. i flip flop with lateralus and aenima being the best. very hard for me to do.

it is a tough question. i prefer the mood and finer details aenima more, yet lateralus seems tighter, more cohesive, and asskicking in the right moments.

on 4 days out of 5, i'd probably say aenima, but that may just be nostalgia making that call. aenima was a breakthrough album in my music listening career.

  13. So Ulysses is out of the question then?

for now, definitely. if i felt like reading any joyce, i'd probably re-read portrait of the artist as a young man. it's been about 9 years and remember very little in terms of details.

haven't had the patience to really finish through an 1000 page novel in the recent months. the last large novel i read was anna karenina, which was sadly too aristocratic in subject matter.

  14. Tried reading Kafka on the Shore once and didn't get very far; I think I'll try again sometime. I can't finish anything these days. I've read quite a few of his short stories, though, and they're really good.

i do like murakami's short stories but never seem to get into his novels. started wind up bird chronicles and couldn't keep going. i've heard that his new novel 1Q84 is really good but reading that 900+ page behemoth is not an option at the moment.

  15. atrocity-exkibition.jpg

haven't read any ballard before yet always wanted to pick up "crash". on the other hand, this one looks pretty interesting. any thoughts about it so far (if you've gotten far enough in, of course)?
