    I mean if they make androids with feelings that have a subjective relationship with the world (we're WAY off from that), maybe they will be able to make something meaningful - but for now machine learning generated stuff is only a tool - because of all the interaction that's needed for live performance or social connection around music - like I'm sure there'll be AI generated songs I like at some point in the future, but like Adam says, it's not all about the output/product - it's not all about recorded music - music is something people participate in, and for now, ML stuff is not an active participant

    to be clear, I don't totally agree with Adam, I don't think machines will never ever pass the musical Turing test (the output test soon sure, although making an evolving body of work showing consistent depth and emotional development, no), but I think it will be hundreds of years from now before true AGI

    But seriously check out Adam Neely's latest vid - I think he makes a great case for why there's some things AI (which is not AI, it's machine learning only) will not be able to do - I especially like the section about 4 types of cognition
     

    Oh, I see auxien already posted it - but yeah, the concept of "musicking" vs. music as a product/output is important

    All of them except Rossz, Meathole, Cylinder box, and My love is a bulldozer - but none of those are bad, I just don't love them as much

    The closest to my heart is Winter in the Belly of a Snake (maybe because it's the first I bought, on CD), the most terrifying are Doll Doll Doll and parts of Find Candace, the most unique is Songs about my Cats, the most fun is Chocolate Wheelchair, the most mentally and emotionally stimulating are Fool the Detector and Cubist Reggae, 1961, She Cried.. and Traditional Synth

    Lately I've been listening to Detrimentalist

    I know some of those are EP's but same difference for me

    From a pseudo-objective point of view, I'd say Choco and Cats are the "best", because they are somehow the most true to what is unique and fun and exciting in snares

    Seems kinda weird to talk about daft punk on this forum, I mean I know it's electronic music, but so is loads of pop music by that standard - the early stuff was ok, I don't know their influences, but probably more interesting than what they did - like the prodigy brought rave to mainstream by kinda making it compositionally accessible, they brought some kind of funky house music to the mainstream it seems like - I mean it's fine, if people are into it, good for them, but I don't see much interesting in them

    Although, did they invent that kind of funky house? That can't be true, no?

    Do you use preset patches on your plugins?

    I was curious how you all felt about using presets, especially on the more complicated synth plugins? I have had fun in the past building sounds from scratch, but in something like Massive, there's a million different permutations, and sometimes, other people have already made interesting presets on there - I think if I were to use them, it would be as a starting point, and then I would try to understand what is interesting about the sound and how I want to tweak it, but how do you all feel about using presets? Is it something you do in your own process?

    For something like the very basic FM plugins, I like to make my own, since it's a lot of fun - but when something has the capacity to build it's own chains/modules etc...

    Thinking about this because I'm starting to work on music again with my friend

    This question could also apply to ready made sample packs - again, I've made a bunch of my own, but I've also used other people's free sample packs, I can see the merit in both

    oh actually now I think of it, British Museum has the fanciest ancient grenade launcher

    I forgot to mention, if you like Brutalist Architecture, maybe go the Barbican (if there a good exhibition or concert on), and go to the South Bank and walk around, cuz at same time you could go to the Hayward (if there's something good on) and the TATE - you could even walk from there to see Tower Bridge and then go to Borough Market for some expensive unique mushroom paste or whatever

    Oh and sometimes Ronnie Scott's sometimes has nice jazz gigs (can't say they're all good, you just have to see what's on), it's really nice in there, but you might spend a bit on cocktails - but as was mentioned, for more experimental stuff Cafe OTO is amazing

    If you like metal, I recommend having a drink in the Dev in Camden, if you like art and world/arty films, check what's on at the ICA near Trafalgar Square, if you want a fun queer night out I recommend seeing what's at the Bethnal Green WMC or Soho Theatre, if you like experimental electronic music, see what's on at Iklectik, if you want a goth thing, there's Kaos, Monster Queen and Slimelight.. what else, wander round Epping Forest or Hampstead Heath, go to the big museums, they're all free (V&A, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, British Museum, TATE modern, TATE britain, National Gallery)

    And if you like Italian pizza/pasta, La Porchetta in Soho I really like - might be worth going if you go for a look round Leicester Square/Piccadilly (just to see the area)

    Also for shopping, that market down Brick Lane, where you can also get a good curry and visit the Whitechapel gallery nearby

    Hackney wick area for graffiti art and warehouse parties, dunno how buzzing it will be now the weather is shittier though
