  1. Still waiting on someone to midi the acid line in mt saint michel. Anyone?

which one exactly? did the first couple of bars for msm the other day, but didnt't continue because i think that except for the middle part it just wouldn't sound good on piano.

but if you have some specific request and I don't have to make it playable on piano i could do it for you. :)

  2.

the soundcloud upload is indeed mastered slightly differently -- comparing the two waveforms it's pretty clear this upload has a lot more dynamic range than the released version which is fairly brickwalled

edit: oh no wait, i forgot soundcloud uploads are 128kbps. okay they're actually exactly the same!

    audiophiles in a nutshell

    heh, spot on.

  3. the music richard makes doesn't need any background knowledge in music theory or anything, the term music theory is kinda weird anyways. only classical music composers really need to know that kind of stuff, and by classical music composers i mean real classical music composers, excluding people like glass who do a completely different thing, just with similar instruments.

doesn't mean that you can't write a complete music-theoretical book about organ alone, which is a good thing in my oppinion.

you can analyse this music, but you don't have to necessarily in order to enjoy/make it. also the absence of a professional musical background can help talented people like rdj be real innovative, because they don't have rules they're subliminally following.

  4. i just finished a first version of the 1st part until the break, not sure if i'm gonna leave it like that tho.

i don't think i can play it at the original speed on piano either, but we'll see.

i uploaded it on soundcloud but reaper ofc doesn't emphasize the different voices in the right way, so it doesn't sound that great.

  5. haha, thx... i can share what i have tomorrow. I can do the melodic part of cock/ver, sure :) I love that part as well. it's also a lot easier to just figure out the melodies without having to make it playable on piano, so it should not be that big of a deal. gonna give it a try as soon as im procrastinating again, so probably pretty soon.

  6. so today i was in the mood to start another piano transcription and decided to give 28 organ a shot....

im only through the first 50 seconds of this track and im completely in love again. the best thing about making those covers is that i have to listen to each bar dozens and dozens of times, which - obviously - makes me recognize so many details i haven't seen before. it's hard for me to put in words, especially since i lack the professional vocabulary, but the way he carves out all the different directions and aspects of that first melody with slight changes every time he repeats this motive already completely blew my mind.

I don't want to go into too much detail, but here's a small example: the synth in the background that comes in at 00:37 seconds changes the whole harmonic context of the melody ( i hope thats understandable :P). By the way, this is something RDJ does quite often: use the same melody and bring it into a different harmonic context by subtle changes in the background every time. The drums also have a different function with every repetition as well. I feel the same way about MSM/SMM, until the middle part you can't really decide in which key the melody is performed because the background constantly changes. sometimes its b flat, sometimes a, sometimes major, sometimes minor. I hope I'm not having a brainfart about this and that some of you guys hear the same :D

Oh fuck Skeletron your Prophet 08 just made my skin orgasm

Feels good man :) Alesis MIDIVERB II on reverb.

Yeah, thanks for the midis! If I can figure out how to export one from Ableton I'll share my own transcription of 28 organ sometime. Went a bit further than reddit dude, I think.

ah neat, i thought about making a piano transcription for organ a couple of times already, i'd love to have your midi version of it.

in case anyone is interested: im currently working on a transcription for "call past rain" by world's end girlfriend, one of my favorite tracks ever... that's gonna take some time until i'm finished/be able to properly play it on piano tho :p

i have got midi-files for all my piano covers, i guess i could share them here as well :)

of course they don't contain any drum tracks and just the melodies, but still they might be cool for you guys to play around with. they sound pretty cool with a decent piano-vst, too.

    i have midi files for:

    bekshu3epnm

    nannou

    diskprept1

and the ending of ziggomatic 17

download link below, make sure to share it with me in case you make some cool remix with them or so... :)

  10. The very end of Produk 29 [101] when the "... fucking whore" sample lands on the last beat. It's so perfect and a bit funny. I would imagine, if I were playing around with a sample like that and wanted to punctuate it as prominently, I'd probably laugh about it, think it was pretty cool and decide not to leave it in, but I love that he did. The choice gives the track some defining character. It's exactly things like this that make his music stand apart from the rest, in general.

I love how he uses those caddy girl's vocal samples all throughout the track and doesn't distort them so you can hear exactly what they're saying... which he doesn't really do on the rest of Syro.

    edit

there are so many other awesome moments in that song.

agreed, just went crazy to that part in my car yesterday :D and as you said, pretty unusual for aphex twin since usually he uses those vocal samples in a more offbeat/distorted way...
