    Unlucky man, unlucky.

Yeah man I’m pretty bummed. I cannot count how many nights I’ve gone to sleep listening to Avec Laudenum.

Wiltzie has done some great work on his own but something special happened when Wiltzie and McBride collaborated.

He also kicked off my ongoing years long addiction to Harold Budd.

He was super nice and approachable every time I saw him after their shows.

    He will be missed.

The most memorable was the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, May of 2008. A friend from the twoism forums couldn’t make it and simply gave me his two front row tickets. Truly an amazing, unforgettable show.

He’ll live on in his music

Wow I forgot about this. I’m so glad you got to go. Thankfully I managed to catch them on that tour at a later date.

Hearing “December Hunting” live was a peak experience for me. Between Brian and Harold Budd, we’ve lost legends of the genre.

  3. It’s been a wild year for releases. Aphex, Ae, OPN, Barker, Andrea, u-Ziq and that’s just off the top of my head.

If Boards of Canada or Stars of the Lid decided to release a record that would just seem like the logical progression for 2023.

  4. Apparently the Drake/Weekend song wasn't a total product of AI, so I guess we're still a ways off.

I guess the problem with BoC is there really isn't that much data to train on (their discography is pretty limited compared to, say, Miles Davis or something) so there's really no telling how compelling ML BoC clones would really be.

It feels like we will eventually get there though.

  5. We may soon have AI that can generate Boards of Canada tracks so plentifully that we no longer need to wait for more output.

I mean seriously that fake Drake/Weekend track is terrifying.

But if Tomorrow’s Harvest really does turn out to be the last “real” Boards of Canada record, I’d say the mood of TH is pitch perfect.

If a friend made it, I think I would like it and think it was really cool that they had made it, but because it's Autechre, you can't help comparing it to what they did later

Lol this is the coldest take on this album I've heard yet

  7. If I had a scrobbler that I'd been using across all the formats I've listened to this record on, I would not be surprised to learn that "Slip" is BY FAR my most played Autechre track and one of my most played tracks of all time.  And this is coming from someone who thinks that "pendulu hv moda" is peak Autechre.

I feel like the boys are hard on Amber sometimes like it was a surrender to commercialism or inauthentic or something. I really would love to see what Autechre would do if they were forced to be as concrete as Amber again. I think that's part of what made the Sophie remix kind of thrilling. It's not that it's their best remix or anything, but it IS Autechre playing by the conventions of genre and that is relatively rare these days imo.

And that's why their output pretty much post LP5 is something that I can't really drop into my playlists or anything because I honestly have to be in the mood for Autechre and me and my wife/kids/guests have to be too. It's music that's just too situational. I know they have 'tame' tracks that would blow our wigs off on their hard drives that probably won't see the light of the day because it breaks up the continuity of their output too violently maybe.

All I'm saying is that if Autechre get on Soundcloud and start up an RDJ dump of old tracks, I will probably be more excited about that than a new album announcement from BOC.

Edit: As I recall from the AMA, Sean or Rob actually talked about trying to make genre tracks but getting bored and not knowing how anybody finishes those things ?

    Totally forgot about B

I’m too synched into Spotify with new releases that if I don’t see it on Spotify then things pass me by. Though I’m sure this album didn’t get much press or attention. It appeared and then seemed to quickly disappear from sight. Anyway it’s on now and is a very nice treat for the ears ?

I agree I feel like I'm always struggling to listen to Skee Mask, Stenny, Andrea, and others that don't have their music on Spotify. I love them but sometimes I just lazy man I'd love for Skee Mask tracks to show up in my playlists again.

    damn JPP263 is a tune

Dude thank you for pointing this track out to me.

But oh my god, I want Skee Mask to finish this one. If it's this good as an unmastered sketch, imagine what it would be like if he really designed it out and brought those whipping synths wayyy more forward in the mix. It's a banger with the potential to be an all-timer.

  10. Set up: Arturia Keystep, Midi Fighter Twister

I love the feel of the midi fighter's knobs, and I definitely get the most enjoyment out of my sessions when I've mapped cool parameters to knobs that I can then just jam with. Problem is, I'm lazy, and sometimes the friction of knob mapping is enough to kill my creative spirit (my creative spirit is not very strong). Plus, once mapped, I just sort of have to remember what I mapped, and once I move beyond 8-12 knobs it just becomes impossible).

What are your workflows or software or scripts you've found helped you? This side of buying a push (or buying hardware, which as far as I can tell increases the complexity quite a bit), how can I reduce all the midi mapping hell? I'm open to any of other quality of life suggestions on Ableton too. I just want to create stuff man not spend my night midi mapping.

  11. @xxx here's another Skee Mask remix that makes my willy jump.

I think the intoxicating thing about Skee Mask is that he likes to inject this 90s sensibility into his music but it's never saccharine it's always cool as fuck. He knows EXACTLY what he's doing with those palettes, these are not imitations or copies. His love of 90s rave hits you right in the chest.

Not really sure the best place to put it but I felt it necessary to alert fans of the Skee to his mighty, bulging remix body. He's not quite to Feast Beast levels yet but I've got a 6 track "EP" of his mixes open and it stands on its own. In fact, even as a Jacques Greene fan, his mix of "Relay" so utterly outshines the original that it reminds me of the Aphex moments of the 90s where his remix would cannonball the rest of the release out of the water. If you guys know others, let me know!

    01 - Plaid - Maru

    02 - Keleketla! - Swift Gathering

    03 - Wladimir M - Planet E

    04 - Konx-om-Pax - Rez

    05 - Jacques Greene - Relay

    06 - Principles Of Geometry - RAM

Funny I just discovered this remix today. It’s fantastic.

Easily tunable string instruments can be tuned however the player wants, but there's an implicit pressure to use a tuning that takes into account the instrument's cultural history and background. A six-string guitar with a Western tuning is not a tool of oppression, nor is an Oud

This gets lost sometimes with bedroom electronica but the real reason for standardized tuning is so musicians can easily collaborate with each other. It's really not some nefarious political scheme.

You're free to microtune if you want, but good luck explaining that to musicians you're working with.

While I 100% agree with the post above, I still prefer the EPs to the LP.

TBH his whole discography is an embarrassment of riches to me. Even the remixes. This guy has struck a serious chord with me and I never saw it coming. Sometimes I run into things on Spotify that just bowl me over and this is one of them.

Edit: Hedonic Treadmill and Models of Well-Being kind of tip Utility over the line for me. I’d argue Debiasing is a perfect EP, but Utility is just this gorgeous psychedelic joy ride and I don’t know if I’ll ever get over it for the rest of my music listening life even with 300+ albums on my shelves and all these gigs of mp3s.

I mean seriously I found this in September 2021 and it along with Hoavi’s “Music for Six Rooms” have been in HARD rotation to this day. That honestly just doesn’t happen to me that often with new music I’m sad to say. Nobody IRL gives a fuck about this though so I thought I’d share this here where I knew you guys would get what I mean.

im not that picky about which barker I just honestly want to hear barker of some kind everyday and I feel no signs of stopping

  15. Sorry to resurrect this thread but Utility + Debiasing EP (I listen to these interchangeably) have entered into my top 10. I have like Boards of Canada level esteem for the sound design of these beautiful records. If you're a techno fan and haven't listened to it - please do.
