I prefer the sound of the JV-1080 to any software synth I've ever tried.
-
I think it's got some stock Roland-type drum sounds too - 808, 909 etc. - which is convenient when I want to run them through external effects or a preamp or whatever.
Not that I've actually done that yet.

Yeah I have one that I bought recently. It has a couple extra cards installed. Good for bread and butter "realistic" sounds occasionally. I haven't dug too deep into it, but I've messed with some effects and things. It has the potential to be deep if you're willing to menu dive.

Is that a Parker Midifly?

Don't forget his Depeche Mode royalties too.
Must've been a real drag getting paid to hang out and record an album in Martin Gore's Santa Barbara estate full of vintage synths.

oh i forgot to mention. i was also a huge prince fan in high school. in my senior year my dad hand me down his yamaha 450 that "coincidently" had a purple tank. back then i had long hair and there were no helmet laws in california. i rode it to school one day and pulled up to my "B-Boy" friends in the parking lot and you all can probably imagine what happened next... they loled and started cappin' (baggin') on me for like the rest of the school year. they would sing "when doves cry" and other songs from the "purple rain" album
and yeah... i was even wearing those round rimmed shades that john lennon made popular and my hair was long.

I have that phone.
Not had - I mean I still have it and use it.

I was the Hall Monitor*. Surprised?
-
I was a metalhead for the first half and a hardcore/punk kid the second half. This was '88-'91.
I tested out before my senior year thank god. High School for the most part was shit.

Might have to nominate migraines for most IDM thing next year.
-
So do migraines mess up your brain and cause you to like IDM?
Or does IDM just give you a migraine?

I was also referred to a neurologist by my doctor, but then they stopped. Not sure if it's related, but that was around the time I got glasses.
edit: i dunno if it is related or not but my eyesight is really bad and sometimes i wonder if my contacts have something to do with it or something, because i often get regular headaches that feel like they are in the back of my eyeballs. i also might have keratoconus, which is something that can cause high pressure in the eyes, so i am sure that doesn't help.

I used to get them from mostly from age 14 to 18, with the last one probably at age 21. I would get a blind spot/aura, my fingers and lips would get numb, then that deathlike headache that would last about 12 hours, which I would try to sleep off in a dark room.
Mine seemed to be induced by stress and also being outside in the sun with lots of glare (beach, pool a bunch of times).
One time some one offered me pot while I had a migraine and holy shit I would recommend it to anyone as a remedy. It's the only thing that ever worked.

My edge is living in a small town with very few diggers and many transplant retirees unloading their collections.
When I was in Southern California I stopped digging because all I could find was

Van McCoy and His Magnificent Movie Machine
What's this record all about? Van McCoy is probably my favorite soul producer/songrwriter from '60s and '70s (along with Holland Dozier Holland), but sometimes he has a bit of cheese, i.e. "The Hustle."
I have yet to listen to it, but by the looks of it, it seems to be Van McCoy doing covers of some of the most sought after movies themes.... gone with the wind, theme from shaft, over the rainbow and so on...

Really fucking nice find on the Charles Wright album... I have been on the hunt for that one.
Found this one not too long ago too.
The guy at my local record store is like the pusher for my vinyl habit.
Just bought a Roland JV1080 :O

The JV-1080 isn't central to the music I do. It's more for the times I want a certain realistic sound - strings, pianos, mellotrons, Rhodes etc. [in fact, it gives me a good reason to sell my real Rhodes that I don't use so much.] I know this can be done with samples in software, but I like running the 1080 through external effects, EQs and preamps and whatnot before going into the computer.
