  1. Oh I remember that, I was watching it on eBay all week and then it ended up going for £250. I mean, that kind of thing, an exceptionally rare promo of something that still hasn't been officially released more than 20 years later, there's an argument for spending silly money if you're passionate about the band. But £65 for a normal album is a different matter entirely.

  2. Oh there are a lot of people who'd be willing to buy it at that price. Anyone of a certain age who's been comfortably in decent paying work for long enough. I see a lot of people who are comfortably well off who seem totally unaware that not everyone can afford this shit. There was a thread here where I mentioned that with shipping and taxes, the Namlook reissues come to around £65 each, which is ludicrous, and somebody replied saying they were worth the money because they come with stickers and stamps and things, seemingly unaware that for many of us, no album is worth that much.

  3. Yeah, there are a lot of things you can throw at them, but not playing live seems an unlikely one. I just think as time goes on their setup gets so good that they're no longer flying by the skin of their teeth and can do the same thing each night without much variation. It's like when Underworld toured Dubnobasswithmyheadman and it sounded like the studio version for the most part, Rick had the entire thing so accurately put together in Ableton that it was immaculate. But it also kind of loses the magic when they do that. I remember recording a Middle of Nowhere era set off the radio and it had Spare Parts Express going into the second half of Impact which then went into the first half which totally blew my mind at the time. When you're not restricted to verse/chorus structures, mess around with your tracks live and make them into something new each time.

  4. Oh, hah, no problem!

And yeah, it's a tricky one juggling the audio - a lot of the earlier material and FSOLDigital stuff doesn't have major distribution so I can throw in full volume samples; the better distributed stuff will get a copyright claim if it's less obscure than quietly behind my voice, and as I'm planning a few ongoing series on my channel it'd be nice to at least have the option of monetising it if it becomes popular enough. So most of the Virgin era will probably just have quiet music in the background. But it's nice to be able to actually illustrate what I'm talking about, especially with some of the lesser known tracks.

Episode 2 covers the rest of the Humanoid era:

  6. Although, to be fair, I did a quick count and, including the different tracks on different formats of the album and the various edits, the Green Album does have 50 non-album tracks, so it was always going to be a push to get them all out easily.

In contrast, I count the known non-album tracks for other albums as:

    Brown: 15
    Snivilisation: 16
In Sides: 21 (10 are live tracks)
    TMON: 23 (17 are remixes)
The Altogether: 16 (13 are remixes)
Blue: 14 (including Rest & Play)
    Wonky: 28 (almost all remixes)
    Monsters Exist: 8 (all remixes)

So whatever comes next should hopefully be a little bit more concise.

  7. Looking at it, given that it includes all the tracks from Mutations and III that aren't on the deluxe album (other than the edits), I wonder whether this deluxe digital version means we won't be getting single drops of III and Midnight / Choice. I suppose with the majority of their tracks already being on the deluxe album it does seem like they're less important, although I'd be kind of surprised if they didn't think 12"s would sell. Satan and Belfast would be enough to shift copies of III alone.

Similar with Mutations, now all the tracks have been issued I wonder if they'll bother doing a separate release. Feels like a very slight anticlimax if so.

Satan (Edit) 3:40 – (Is The Industry Standard Edit from ’96 Satan Live the same mix?)

No, the 1996 version is a complete re-recording.

              Satan Spawn 3:45

Chime (Live Style Mix) 6:47 And (Live Style Radio Mix) 4:19

    Christmas Chime (Edit) 3:20

    Christmas Chime 5:08

Also: for the completists... The 2 Mike Flowers "Mixes" and The Naughty Naughty "Remix" of Chime, and "Belfunk" by Sasha (Rejected Belfast Remix)

It's possible these will be saved for later reissues - Satan Spawn I can imagine being alongside the '96 version on the In Sides box, and the Live Style mix I'm sure will be a much-needed piece to try and fill out at least one disc of extras for the Blue Album. As for Christmas Chime, well, let's be honest, nobody actually wants to listen to Christmas Chime.

  9. That £5 voucher is very generous, meaning they're only expecting me to spend £29.99 to get a handful of (but not all of the!) remixes. I know this is likely London Records's doing but it's fucking awful.

Anyway, the book's very nice, comes with some replica flyers, a lot of detail about the album and the tracks, loads of scans of reviews and interviews from the time, a solid hour or more's reading. Would have liked at least a couple of paragraphs on the artwork, I really love Grant Fulton's weirdly idiosyncratic designs, but oh well. He didn't work on the art for the reissue so maybe he wasn't available. Listened to the first two discs so far, it's really nice to have lots of these tracks in high quality, especially Untitled/Torpedo Town. 'Open Mind Jam' is nice but, er, it's actually a jam on 'Omen'. 'The Other One' is ok, bit basic, can tell why it wasn't released. Still a bit sad there's not more in the way of unreleased material, Paul put a few bits on his Soundcloud a few years back that were enjoyable.

  10. Always enjoy Pitchfork's Sunday reviews, they're generally packed with background and historical info and written from someone passionate about the album. Good stuff there, nice to see the nod to Burial, whose earlier material is probably the closest I can think that comes to this album. Interesting that Trans 7 was mastered from a dubplate and so the vinyl crackle is all genuine, too, love little trivia like that.

For what its worth their reissues are absolutely worth every penny. The level of care and attention to detail they put into each release is unmatched. When I got Air II it shipped with tons of extra goodies - NASA memorabilia, art prints, vintage 70s stamps, a handwritten note, 3 free download codes for other FAX releases, all on top of it looking and sounding utterly incredible.

Will be buying everything they put out no questions asked.

I appreciate that, but it's not the cost of the record that I have an issue with, it's the shipping. If they could just hook up with some UK distro I'd buy one in a shot, but £65 is way out of my price range for one album.
