How should I go about making ambient music?

get reason or something like it. Take a preset pad in the synth and hold a note down for 5mins. Then add some effects like distortion ect and start twisting knobs.

Make 5 different tracks with this same technique, then edit them all together.

loop some steve reich and play cockeral sound effects and samples about clouds on top. also some wind sound effects couldn't hurt.

I make drones like this: Eat a load of very hot chili. While this is digesting i set up a microphone and setup my sequencer to record at the highest resolution i can.

That's the hard bit over...

Now: Press record. Hopefully your gas should need to escape. Fart. Time stretch ad nauseum and add reverb and filters et voila!!!

Try to make longer more interesting sounds then you usually do, see how you can evolve them over time, and pick a mood

Good and sensible advice.
