any fans of the show here? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Designs

Series 9 is 3 episodes and so far nothing much of interest.

Ep1 - the listed ones are usually best but this was a pretty boring building to start with and they kept way too many windows (maybe they had to) and didnt really save it. watching rich people throw money at builders isnt that much fun.

Ep2 was probably the best as it was a self build and a crazy one. all he wanted was a bridge. i felt for him with all the planning trouble. it was too tall though. i liked the red wood finish though.

Ep3 - incredible castle type building on top of a hill. idiots were greedy for space so built an extension in white and stuck it on the side. made me so sad, it looked awful. like your granny wearing a baseball cap. real real shame. listed too so not sure who let them do that

next weeks sounds good its called 'The Zero Carbon Eco house'

love this program. also apologies for my comments about your vitriolicity(?) benedict

no apology required young sir. i do rant on here a bit. i'm sat at my desk all day and this is my outlet. so when i'm in a bad mood it comes out here.

any thoughts on the series so far?

something seems to be different. kevins questions don't seem like he cares anymore or hes not interested in the answers. hes waiting to do his tension building "will they finish" and wrap up pieces to camera. i like to watch the old episodes and laugh at his hair

heh ... dude that was ex-UK boxing champ (from a long time ago) was at my werk one sub-day early morning ... and i happened to have this show on ... and he couldn't stand the presenter ... there was a chaotic mix of insults flying at the television .. you know the regulation poncy git type deal ... shame .. cause the show can actually be rather rewarding .. even if he oftimes repeats himself in the voice over scripting .. and has an obsession with following the guidelines set out by architects... as if what they just threw togeather has anymore relevance than that which the client just throws out as ideas during the build ...

it is rare to see a truely hot looking build though ... as much as i semi-enjoy the show and watch it religiously .. (cause iem at werk yol .. praktising gitar and watcing tV !!) ..

i saw the second one but didnt catch the other two. i never really watch TV but whenever i am and just flicking through channels i always settle on this if its on.

i suppose i know what you mean about his questions. its probably the usual thing where a series is getting pretty and to keep it going they have to sacrifice certain more specialist elements (like the architecture side)and emphasize the more audience friendly ones (the tension of the deadline etc)

i like it but i've only seen ep.2 this series.. the guy built it himself which was definately admirable but the house was horrible and far from 'grand'.

i admire kevin even though he's a smarmy ponce. he knows his onions and speaks 3 or 4 languages fluently. i reckon he appears disinterested cos the builds are getting less 'grand design' as time passes...

i caught a bit of a repeat earlier with a south african couple building in spain. pots of cash, zero taste (i work for this type of people every day)... the house ended up an embarassment.

ep4 was the arch house. its great when an architect builds a house for themselves. usually the best shows and this show was good. overall i liked the arch and that was pretty much it about this one. people always build their houses too big. houses are meant to be cozy not hanger sized.

ep5 was the tyre wall self build. interesting building technique but it seems crazy to build somethign as nice as the round part and then add what resembled a stable on the side. real shame. the stone walls looked really nice. i wuld have clad the outside of the whole house in them. i do have a thing for buried houses though. i love it when the grass goes up the back wall and even better over the roof. living in a burrow. wasnt quite that good but could have been with a little more thought.

tornado alley could uses a few part underground houses ... half the reason they get knocked and ripped up though.. is shoddy construction/standards .. (this comment mostly applies to gulf states and florida re: hurricanes though ..)..

god damn last nights was a shitty house. never thought i'd say it but too much wood! the staircase was awful compared with last weeks artist made helix staircase. and kevin let everyone down by not calling it out as the shithole it was. real boring people too. "when i rang the phone was busy so i knew she was on the phone". idiot. the shape was so dull, they should have buried it.

everyone is using floor to ceiling windows these days. fuck that, whats wrong with windows?
