What with all the baby eating Americans and sister cunnilinguing Canadians and penis chomping furry British hitmen around lately, I thought it would be fun if we all shared in the shame, and post news stories where our compatriots do their best to make us ashmamed of our respective countries. Feel free to narrow it down to state/territory level if you are in a larger/more fucked up country :wizard:

I'll start...

New Zealand Athlete Becomes Pimp To Fund Olympic Preparation

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -A New Zealand taekwondo athlete has opened a brothel to help fund his bid to compete at the 2012 London Olympics, local media reported Sunday.

Logan Campbell, 23, told the Sunday Star-Times newspaper he hoped his Auckland "gentleman's club,'' which provided escort services, would help him raise about $200,000 toward his London Games campaign.

Campbell, who finished in the top 16 in the featherweight division at last year's Beijing Olympics, said he spent around $90,000 competing in international events leading up to the games.

Most of the money had been provided by his parents, he said. His father, Max, an auctioneer, had worked two jobs to support his son's Olympic quest.

Campbell told the newspaper his desire to avoid being a burden on his parents led him to open the brothel with business partner Hugo Phillips, 20. He said he had introduced several of his female employees to his mother who "realized they were just normal people supporting kids and stuff.''

Taekwondo New Zealand funding manager John Schofield said the governing body of the sport in the country would have to consider whether Campbell was suitable for international selection.

"Selection takes into account not just performance but also the athlete's ability to serve as an example to the youth of the country,'' Schofield said.

Fatal Crash Driver Said He Was In Time Machine

A driver who killed two people in a high-speed car crash told police he was in a time machine and could become invisible above 100kmh.

In the High Court in Auckland this week Mark Paul Warren, 26, a sickness beneficiary, was sent to a mental institution after earlier being found not guilty of manslaughter and dangerous driving by reason of insanity.

Justice Geoffrey Venning committed Warren to the Henry Rongomau Bennett Centre, a facility in Hamilton for people with acute mental illness, The New Zealand Herald reported.

Warren was unlicensed when he was at the wheel of a car that collided with a four-wheel-drive vehicle on George Bolt Memorial Drive, near Auckland airport in Mangere, in December 2007.

Warren's passenger and a passenger in the other vehicle were killed, while the other driver spent two months in hospital.

Warren, who suffered from manic depression, told police he genuinely believed he could become invisible if he went above 100kmh.

A speed analysis concluded he was travelling up to 166kmh at the time of the crash.

Here's one after perusing today's headlines in the local paper.

Suspected foot-fetish attacker sought by authorities

Medford police are looking for a man wearing a red baseball cap who abused a 15-year-old girl's feet Tuesday after asking her to try on a pair of shoes at a Medford clothing store.

Detective Sgt. Mike Budreau said the man was described as being in his 40s, caucasian, 6-feet-tall, thin build, with brown thinning hair, who was wearing shorts and a T-shirt. He was not an employee of the store, Ross Dress for Less.

Budreau said the man approached the girl about 1 p.m. and asked her to try on a pair of shoes, supposedly for his wife. The girl consented. He proceeded to help her buckle the shoes and then began kissing and fondling her feet and lower leg.

When the girl yelled for her sister, the man ran off, police said.

"He is someone that is sexually gratified by feet and the lower leg," Budreau said. "It's bizarre, but there are people like that."

Two women who learned of the incident later informed police that a man had approached them in a similar manner, one at JCPenney, the other at Ross. Both women told police they immediately pulled away when the man tried buckling their shoe, Budreau said.

The women viewed video from Ross cameras, and told police they were approached by the same man who approached the girl, Budreau said.

Three similar cases occurred in a Clackamas County Target store on July 17 and 18. Budreau said videos indicated the same man had visited the Clackamas store and the Medford stores.

The man was wearing the red baseball cap in all the videos.

"We got such great pictures of him that we're confident that someone will recognize him," he said.

Police said the man could face charges of first-degree sexual abuse, which carries a mandatory minimum prison sentence of six years and three months under Measure 11 guidelines.

Budreau said the man may have approached other women "but I think the victims could be embarrassed or feel dirty."

yeah, that's the weird part, not that he tried it in a store with a teenage girl he didn't know without her consent.

maybe we should just concede that the United States has won this thread...

[url=http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_STATE_SCHOOLS_FIGHT_CLUB]http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_STATE_SCHOOLS_FIGHT_CLUB[/url

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) -- Videos of workers forcing developmentally disabled residents to fight at a state-run living center, punctuated by staff laughter and warnings of "no biting," were shown to jurors Tuesday during the trial for one of six indicted former workers.

Four short cell phone videos taken by a night worker at Corpus Christi State School showed one resident terrified, screaming while running around a room as another resident tried to hit him. In another video, a resident was told to push another far bigger resident to instigate a fight. The facility houses about 360 people.

"This was their form of entertainment," said Nueces County Assistant District Attorney Doug Mann.

Jesse Salazar, 25, is accused of helping instigate and failing to stop the fights in what police called a "fight club." If convicted, Salazar could face up to 10 years in prison.

Before jurors saw the videos, defense attorney Cecil Starcher told them that they showed Salazar trying to stop the fights. But the grainy images showed that when Salazar was not instigating or filming a fight, he intervened only before fighting residents fell on the ground or appeared to be hitting each other in the head, which one witness said was to avoid visible injuries.

Almost 20 videos dating back to 2007 were discovered in March when a cell phone containing the images was found at a clothing store and turned in to police. The videos shown Tuesday took place in early 2008.

"It's one of the saddest things you've ever seen," Mann told jurors, adding that fights were sometimes instigated by employees using pranks.

Amanda Morales, a facility investigator for Texas Adult Protective Services, testified that she worked in the unit on the day shift in 2008 before moving to her current job and was unaware of the fights. When watching the videos, she said "it's upsetting" and said staff should have intervened before residents had any physical contact.

Michael Pugh, a 34-year-old resident at the facility, testified that staff members wanted him to fight other residents. In one video, Pugh can be seen chasing another terrified resident as staff egg him on.

Asked if he recognized anyone from the facility in the courtroom Tuesday, Pugh pointed to and identified Salazar. Pugh said he did not remember who he fought, but said staff encouraged him to do it.

But his testimony conflicted at times. He initially said only Timothy Dixon, a defendant accused of filming the bouts, made him fight. He then said he didn't remember Salazar watching the fights, and minutes later said of Salazar, "it wasn't him all the way through, but some of it was him."

Former employees testified they were afraid of reporting the fights and that Pugh wasn't normally violent.

Vincent Johnson, who pleaded guilty last week to not intervening to stop a fight and received a suspended sentence, said talk about Pugh's deceased mother could set him off but he wasn't normally violent. Johnson said he did not report the abuse because, "I didn't want to make it seem like I was against the staff."

Another former employee, Stephanie Garza, who was charged with not intervening but offered immunity in exchange for her testimony, said the fights began shortly after she started work at the facility. She said one staff member told her, "on this unit we don't like snitches."

Garza, 22, said she saw orchestrated fights about twice a week and remembered one that left a resident with a black eye.

In one video, Salazar is seen motioning to resident David Hernandez, who Garza said weighed about 150 pounds, to sneak up behind and push fellow resident Anthony Boatman - who Garza estimated was about 240 pounds. Boatman responded by chasing Hernandez around the room and punching him several times in the chest.

Boatman backed off and then, with Salazar standing a couple feet away, Hernandez grabbed Boatman from behind. Boatman threw him to the floor and punched him several times in the face before they separated. Salazar raised Hernandez's arm in victory.

If convicted of intentionally promoting a fight that resulted in an injury to a disabled person or striking a resident, Salazar could face between two and 10 years in prison. If jurors decide Salazar's crime was one of omission for not stopping the fights, he could be sentenced to between six months and two years in jail.

Texas public schools required to teach Bible this year

WHITEHOUSE, TX (KLTV) - The school year is almost here, and if literature of the Bible is not already offered in your child's school, it will be this fall.

Books are a common sight in classrooms around the nation, but the Bible is one book that is not. Come this fall, a Texas law says all public schools must offer information relating to the Bible in their curriculum.

"By the end of the year, what they begin to realize is that it is pervasive. You can't get away from it. The kids came back and were like 'It's everywhere,'" said John Keeling, the social studies chair at Whitehouse High School. Whitehouse already offers a Bible elective. "The purpose of a course like this isn't even really to get kids to believe it per say. It is just to appreciate the profound impact that it has had on our history and on our government," said Keeling.

The law actually passed in 2007, but this will be the first school year it is enforced because the bill says, "The provisions of this act pertaining to a school district do not take effect until the 2009-2010 school year."

This has gained mixed reactions from East Texans. "I think it is a good thing because a lot of kids don't have that experience, and they already want to take prayer out of school as it is-- and you see where our kids are ending up!" said Tyler resident Laura Tucker.

Tyler resident Havis Tatum disagress with Tucker. He said, "I don't want anybody teaching their religious beliefs to my child unless they want to send their child to my house and let me teach them my religious views. There is no difference."

School officials tell us schools haven't enforced this law because of confusion over the bill's wording and lack of state funding.

For now, each school district must find a way to fill the requirement before the seats are filled with students.

Police Reject Candidate for Being Too Intelligent

A US man has been rejected in his bid to become a police officer for scoring too high on an intelligence test.

Robert Jordan, a 49-year-old college graduate, took an exam to join the New London police, in Connecticut, in 1996 and scored 33 points, the equivalent of an IQ of 125.

But New London police interviewed only candidates who scored 20 to 27, on the theory that those who scored too high could get bored with police work and leave soon after undergoing costly training.

Mr Jordan launched a federal lawsuit against the city, but lost.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York upheld a lower courts decision that the city did not discriminate against Mr Jordan because the same standards were applied to everyone who took the test.

He said: This kind of puts an official face on discrimination in America against people of a certain class. I maintain you have no more control over your basic intelligence than your eye color or your gender or anything else.

He said he does not plan to take any further legal action and has worked as a prison guard since he took the test.

The average score nationally for police officers is 21 to 22, the equivalent of an IQ of 104, or just a little above average

Monkey pushes woman who wouldn't share off cliff

A MONKEY has pushed a woman off a cliff.

The woman, 60-year-old Zhou Juchang, made the claim after winding up at the bottom of a seven-metre rockface, fracturing her hip and breaking three ribs.

Now she’s suing her travel agent, who organised her trip into China’s Chengdu Wildlife Park.

The monkey allegedly flew into a rage when the woman refused to hand over the bag of monkey food which her tour guide recommended she buy.

A spokesman for the park said the woman’s mistake was showing fear.

“If you show fear a monkey will bully you,” he told London’s Metro.
