SECOND WAVE OF UNSOUND 2011 ANNOUNCEMENTS - INCLUDING JOHN FOXX & THE MATHS, SUN ARAW, LAUREL HALO, DEAF CENTER, SEX WORKER AND ITAL!

johnfoxxfoxx02.jpg

John Foxx was arguably the most important figure in the synthesizer revolution of the late 70s and early 80s. He was the frontman for the early, more experimental Ultravox, whose mix of electronic noise, punk and art rock directly influenced the likes of Gary Numan and many others. Foxx then went on to record the now-classic solo album "Metamatic", its robotic sci-fi vision famously inspired by UK sci-fi writer J.G.Ballard, exhausted urban landscapes and automobiles.

In 2011 he released his new album "Interplay" with the Maths, east London synth archivist Ben "Benge" Edwards. As BBC wrote, "this album is the perfect synthesis of warm retro and cold futurism; of what the future used to sound like, what it turned out to be and what it still could be."

Perhaps John's lasting influence is felt now more than ever - the reason we've given John Foxx & The Maths their rightful place at the heart of Unsound's 2011 "Future Shock" program. They will perform material from their new album "Interplay", as well as classic songs from early Ultravox and John's "Metamatic" album. Already announced, Chris & Cosey are on the same bill.

Sun Araw's nocturnal sound fuses psychedelia, dub, drones and trippy blues in slow-burning tunes that have reviewers reaching for freaked-out dictionaries to find the right dank adjectives. The main man behind the project is the prolific Cameron Stallones, who was also a former member of Pocahaunted and Magic Lantern. Sun Araw will be strutting their stuff on an amazing bill with the previously announced Hype Williams and New Yorker Laurel Halo.

Just as Foxx was inspired by Ballard, so Laurel's work is as influenced by U.S. sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick as much as Steve Reich or Detroit techno. Working with synths, Laurel has managed to stand out from the pack with a unique, sensuous sound. Fact Magazine recently wrote of "Hour Logic" that it "sounds distinctly familiar, yet totally individual, and in this sense it really is a triumph."

Sex Worker and Ital are two projects from Brooklyn-based Daniel Martin-McCormick, who holds the rare honor of having performed at Unsound Krakow's first ever concert in 2002, as part of the legendary band Black Eyes. Sex Worker releases his screeching, contorted synth-pop jams on the wonderful LA label Not Not Fun - which we can now reveal is presenting a showcase at this year's festival. The Not Not Fun showcase so far also includes Dylan Ettinger. As for Ital, this project is put out by Not Not Fun's sister label 100% Silk - which gives a thrillingly weird take on "dance" music. (Daniel is also part of Mi Ami - a busy man!)

Fans of the more ambient side of contemporary music don't worry: Unsound will not neglect you. We have quite a few names coming up and for now can confirm Norwegian duo Deaf Center will be performing, after a superb show at Unsound Festival New York 2011 presenting their evocative music. Boomkat said of their 2011 release "Owl Splinters" that it is "like returning to a dream you once had, only this time you're awake and the dream is hauntingly vivid. Essential."

Cut Hands has also been added to the bill, a meeting of noise and African percussion created by William Bennett, the man behind the legendary power electronics group Whitehouse. The debut Cut Hands album "Afro Noise I" was eight years in the making, and has garnered praise from around the world for its abrasive and atmospheric mix of machine and acoustic rhythm. It really sounds like nothing else around.

There is a lot more to come - so stay tuned! Next announcement coming very soon!

THIRD WAVE OF UNSOUND 2011 ARTISTS ANNOUNCED - WITH MANY SPECIAL PROJECTS AND PRESENTATIONS!

Two major elements of the Unsound 2011 program involve prominent artists from the club world presenting special projects transporting them outside their standard environment, into unique locations and contexts.

The first of these sees famed Chilean-German producer/DJ Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer (Sun Electric, Moritz von Oswald Trio, nsi.) present a live version of their album "RE:ECM" in the glorious surrounds of St Katherine's, a 16th century Gothic church.

On the album, Villalobos and Loderbauer create new music by drawing on recordings from ECM, the seminal German imprint devoted to jazz and new music. The idea of reworking the past to create something new is therefore deeply embedded in this project, which bridges the worlds of improvisation and composition with ambient electronics and traces of techno. One of the main artists from whom Villalobos and Loderbauer take source materials is Christian Wallumrød, a Norwegian pianist who has released several acclaimed albums with the label, both solo and with ensembles. For this special performance in Krakow, Wallumrød will perform on piano.

This is only the second time that Re:ECM has been presented live, following the launch of the album at the Berlin club Berghain this year. They perform on Thursday 13th October; opening will be Norwegian duo Deaf Center, also incorporating piano into their dark, ambient soundscapes.

Like Villalobos, Kode9 needs little introduction; one of the most important figures in the constantly evolving UK club music scene, he is the founder of Hyperdub and an influential force since the early days of dubstep. Kode9 will create a special project for Unsound with German video artist / VJ MFO, who has collaborated with Unsound over the past two years, presenting visuals for the likes of Shackleton and Oni Ayhun.

The work will take the Krakow 2011 theme "Future Shock" as a starting point, to create a homage to the 1962 Chris Marker film "La Jetée", which tells the story of a post-nuclear war time travel experiment. The film was also the basis for the title of Kode9's first album with Spaceape, "Memories of the Future". Kode9's preoccupation with futurism, mutant strains of music, sonic warfare and dark, experimental sound will undoubtedly feed well into this special project, as will the warped imagery of MFO.

Again, this is not a club show. It will be presented on Friday 14th October in a seated context, at Krakow's Kino Kijów, a cinema built in 1967 with a futuristic take on communist-era architecture.

The Caretaker/Leyland Kirby had always dealt with memory and time, mining the past in deep, mysterious ways. By channeling his mysterious collection of old 78 records, his Caretaker project in particular attempts to capture an era that has disappeared but continues to haunt. This time-bending activity also makes him a likely candidate to create something special for our "Future Shock" program, especially as he is an avowed fan of the 1972 documentary adaptation of Toffler's book, featuring Orson Welles as the narrator. The Caretaker/Leyland Kirby will perform the same night as Kode9, along with the previously-announced Morton Subotnick & Lillevan.

The Polish artist Jacaszek will stage the official premiere of his much-anticipated new album "Glimmer" at Unsound 2011. To be released on Ghostly International, this work combines subtle, blurred electronic elements with harpsichord and bass clarinet. It recalls baroque chamber music, yet is also very contemporary. The music will be presented with especially created visuals by Portuguese artist Pedro Maia.

Kangding Ray will bring his three-piece band to present "OR", released on Raster Norton, an album that dissolves the border between experimental and bass music. Its dark sounds are an attempt to depict the "disillusions of modern civilizations, while initiating a positive reflection on crisis as a creative state." Collapsing economies, dysfunctional political systems, corporate alienation - all inspire this music, and are very much "Future Shock" themes.

Also operating from the dark fringes of club culture, Ethereal UK producer Holy Other releases on Tri Angle. In the words of Boomkat, his emotive, futurist music occupies "the spooked space between R&B, techno and dark ambient." Holy Other performs with previously-announced Sun Araw, Hype Williams and Laurel Halo.

For fans of straight up club music, we are pleased to announce the inclusion of Montreal artist Jacques Greene, who will perform live on an array of analogue equipment. This energetic show recently made its debut at MUTEK, where it was considered a highlight for the way it walked the line between techno and bass music. Jacque Greene releases on Lucky Me and Night Slugs.

Objekt has attracted huge attention this year for a series of hand stamped white labels that disregard convention, compounding elements of dubstep minimalism and techno with a self conscious futurism, to create a lean, unique voice. He will also perform live at Unsound.

Also from UK, Jam City releases on Night Slugs. His grime-inflected house is also very much in the "Future Shock" mode, with alien synths, robotic percussion and "glow-in-the-dark Night Slugs ecstasy". Along with Joy Orbison, he'll be one of the few DJ's at the Unsound club nights in 2011 (most of the artists will be performing live).

Other previously announced names include: Chris & Cosey, John Fox & The Maths, 2562, MMM, Andy Stott, Addison Groove, Space Dimension Controller, KiNK, Kassem Mosse, Ital, Dylan Ettinger, Morphosis, Sex Worker, Drednought and Cut Hands.

We're not done yet, not by a long shot - there is still more names coming, so stay tuned.

Unsound 2011 is part of the official program of the Polish Presidency of the European Union, supported by the Krakow City Council. It is also produced with the support of the Culture Programme of the European Union, as part of the ECAS network (European Cities of Advanced Sound).

And yes, in case you were wondering, we did include the phrase "Third Wave" in the headline on purpose. :)
