Traktor DJ tips?

i really don't mean any offense, but i would be really disappointed if i watched someone dj like this. i appreciate the skill involved in djing, from the track selection to the mixing. drag and drop is not skill, like you said, "piss easy." you're not supposed to have tons of free time while your dj-ing. if you do, than that's a good indicator that you're a lazy dj.

auto-beatmatching/syncing in traktor or ableton is lots of fun in a bedroom, but it's not rewarding or impressive at a gig.

wouldn't you be disappointed if rdj pressed play on his laptop, and then walked away, or danced for 3 minutes before returning to his laptop to start the next track.

not a very compelling performance.

Not really bothered. I honestly can say I go to gig for music not viewing. Truthfully once I have my tune playing I don't really want to fuck with it. I wasn't trying to do any fancy shit because I just didn't feel it was appropriate. I'm not a pro at beat matching yet but will get better. Besides people have enough to cope with at a party not knowing every single tune one plays without fuckin' them up into oblivion. I prefer to play a good varied set of tunes rather than some total wankfest. I'm not boasting, no actually I am, but I reckon I play a pretty fuckin decent set. I know I can't beat match for shit and some of my timing is well dodgy but I've been out so often and usually the sets are wank. Usually sets are full of wanky tunes that nobody knows and the vibe is all over the place. I don't think half the Djs out there at electronic music gigs can Dj anyways. To me their sets are often too wanky and obscure. Peeps want to hear tunes they know.

 electronic music DJs play too much obscure shit. I'm sorry a whole set of obscure tunes ain't no one's friend's. Now I'm not talking about playin' pop shit but am I saying pop in some classics that folks know such as LFO - LFO, Humanoid, some old skool funk/electro/disco, some Michael Jackson, some Prodigy, SL2 etc etc. Don't make sets totally up your ass electronic squidgy glitchy shit and obscure.

I'll give you a good example I put on a night a few years back and this hip hop DJ just played a whole bunch of obscure specialised hip hop. Well guess what know one knows that shit and even I know that. You have to draw peeps in and that means playin' some tunes they know. Incidently this was a electronic music night so the spectrum was supa wide (in otherwords expect everything). Of course I do appreciate it totally depends on the audience of course but you gotta throw tunes in that folks are gonna know otherwise you're totally alienating them. I mean my knowledge is pretty vast so I dred to think what other folks experiences are.

so if you're playing music that people already know, and you're not doing anything interesting with it...

what makes you any better than winamp?

why should people come to see you, instead of sitting at home with their iPod?

mixing records IS about music, NOT visual... unless it's some idiot electronic music dick face wearing a nintendo powerglove and some braids in his hair, jumping around and yelling to cover up his lack of talent.

but yeah, people don't like hawtin because he puts on a stellar visual performance, but because of the blends of music he can create by twiddling and mixing.

if you're just getting started, there's no shame in learning, just don't pretend that pressing play every 2-3 minutes makes for a satisfactory dj gig.

No offence but that's like such a stupid comment. I come out to have a good time, socialize etc and yes I want good music to listen to. I'm not lookin for the best performance ever. I'd rather go out with a bunch of electronic music fans and go see an average Dj play a bunch of tunes I know than a big name such as Aphex or whoever play a set which bores my socks off. The thing is I've got past the whole I have to see xyz play. I've been out to see this, that and the other play and often they're no better than Joe DJ for sheer pleasure. People go out 'cause they want to hear phat tunes with folks who enjoy phat tunes on a phat pa. I sometimes think that folks such as yourself go for some visual thing or something else. I just go out to enjoy the music and that means a set which is fun and enjoyable.

Yeah but you spoke about how some just pressing playing on Traktor is boring. Well to me if they press play and is tune I like then its not boring. I agree that mixing and beatmatching is important but so is tune selection and flow and folks dancing. No point being Mr Fucking DJ Skillz Master if all the shit you play is too obscure for folks to dig but yes I take your point on board.

I'm not pretending anything. I'm just telling you how it is. People really couldn't give a flying fuck about a whole bunch of tricks if they don't know the music or the set is too obscure. I never get the feelin from going out to 'electronic music' gigs that the folks DJing are particularly this or that. I think good beatmatching is important and so is flow and picking right tunes though.

wow, so you really don't like being exposed to new music at a dj gig? you only want to hear stuff you know?

how boring. i guess this is just where we differ. i'd rather be a a club and hear some sick ass track come on and be like "WTF>!>! OMFG what is this shit?!?!?" than hear only music i know.

there's also the difference between going to see a dj set, and going to a club that happens to have a dj.

when i go to see the dj, i expect more than winamp. when i go just to hang out and drink, winamp djs are fine.
