  1. (Reuters) - China's leaders issued thinly veiled rebukes to North Korea for raising regional tensions, with the president saying no country should throw the world into chaos and the foreign minister warning that Beijing would not allow mischief on its doorstep. The weekend comments were the strongest yet by China in response to more than a month of North Korean rhetoric that has included threats to launch a nuclear attack on the United States and to wage war with Seoul. No country "should be allowed to throw a region and even the whole world into chaos for selfish gain", President Xi Jinping told a forum on the southern Chinese island of Hainan. He did not name North Korea but he appeared to refer to Pyongyang. Former U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman said Xi's comments were unprecedented. "It suggests to me, as I've watched the ratcheting up of frustration among Chinese leaders over the last many years, that they've probably hit the 212-degree boiling point as it relates to North Korea," he told CNN on Sunday. The statement carried by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) monitored in Seoul said all North Korean workers will be pulled out from the border town located just north of the demilitarized zone. It warned follow-up measures will be implemented after reviewing actions taken by the South. -- Steve Herman report on Kaesong. Pyongyang is to pull out all of its 53,000 workers from the only joint complex operated by the two Koreas. VOA Correspondent Steve Herman in Seoul reports this is an ominous development. https://soundcloud.com/voa-korea/kaesong2 -- http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/08/world/asia/koreas-tensions/index.html?c=homepage-t

  6. For what it's worth. This is an article from a South Korean news site posted back on March 15 Quote: South Korean intelligence authorities believe the latest moves by Kim Jong-un to ratchet up tensions through a series of war threats are linked to the incident last year. Their analysis is that Kim is siding with military hard-liners to solidify his regime and seek internal unity. To this end, they say, the North Korean leader has a three-stage scenario to bring about fear of a nuclear war in both the North and South Korea, the source said. The first stage is issuing war threats against the South and spreading the idea that a war is imminent, the source said. The second stage is reportedly forcing foreigners in the North to leave the country, warning that their personal safety cannot be guaranteed in time of war. The North would also inform foreign diplomatic missions in Pyongyang to pull out their citizens. The third step will be a terrorist attack on a public installation in the South such as an airport, or an armed attack like the sinking of the Cheonan, the source said. “They are afraid that the public will be very agitated by forthcoming food shortages in April,” another official said. “Kim Jong-un doesn’t want to start a war. He just wants to escalate tensions to unite his people and find a way through the tightened sanctions.” The official also said the North is likely to stage an attack that cannot be conclusively blamed on it. http://koreajoongangdaily.joinsmsn.c...px?aid=2968561 And now today : Quote: We can confirm that the British Embassy in Pyongyang received a communication from the North Korean government this morning. It said that the North Korean government would be unable to guarantee the safety of embassies and international organisations in the country in the event of conflict from April 10.

  11. I don't think they can launch all 10,000 at once though? It'd take days for them to carry out all that ammo... maybe I really don't know actually. Which is why I was interested in any sources on expected range of damage they could inflict. South Korea 'deploys warships to track North missiles' CNN: Russia considering evacuating embassy in South Korea (after request made by North Korea) 12.25 We've just been told that the British embassy has, like their Russian counterparts, been advised to leave Pyongyang. 12. North Korea basically is a weaponized nuclear state. Again, if the US invades now, North Korea launches at the very least all of their conventional artillery toward South Korea and Japan, causing millions of deaths. Discussion at the official level is not appeasement. The day China signs on to any sort of agreement where the US invades is the day I eat an entire raw onion on live webcam for y'all. Source on the millions of deaths? I have no understanding of how capable SK/US forces would be in destroying most of their air and missile forces. I read some figure that said they could take out their airforce if they attacked first and then minimize causalities to 100,000 in Seoule. But I still had no idea how accurate that was.

  14. I heard the possibility that his uncle would be the "puppet master" right after Kim Jong Il passed. I agree about isolationism as well. If they'd keep quiet then they'd be left alone. But all this talk of escalation is putting a lot of folks on edge. I believe part of the cause for NK's agitation is the US government telling them that they're not allowed to have nukes. Same with Iran. If they shouldn't have nuclear armaments though, then why should we? Seems hypocritical to me. We should definitely be dismantling or disposing of our nukes, but the idea of nuclear proliferation is to keep nukes contained and limited so that no one who is crazy enough actually starts a nuclear war. We've used them twice in Japan to end WW2 as the Japanese were practically defeated but refused to surrender. It most likely saved lives. Post that era I doubt we will ever use a nuke again.. even if NK uses one, we are much more effective with strategic missiles and aircraft/drones (taking out their military / not civilians).

  18. Thanks for the source, will use this as another outlet for information. When you say from a North Korean perspective, what has SK or the US said that is equivalent to the amount of threats being made by NK? It seems pretty clear one side is threatening war while the US is responding seriously to those threats. Not to mention if you look at the recent history of attacks being carried out by NK. And real quickly what should be the policy of the United States in regards to NK? Is it as simple as lifting sanctions and giving them food? And do you deny their use of concentration camps? I'd be interested to learn more about what your friends girlfriend description of life in NK was like.
