  1. I set it to close at midnight - I would imagine that would be CST, my time zone, so that would be +6 UK time, so 6AM UK time on the 8th of November.

Huge thanks and respect to both you and Sean (AE) for not only taking the time to answer these questions, but to continously be in here answering them - far more than I think anyone here expected. Really cool.

hey Joyrex, its been a pleasure actually. madly, its better this way, i hate lists of q's. this is people.

cool, so yeah ok thats the zone - i reckon i'll be in tmoro anyway.

  2. just listening to 'nth dafuseder.b' (grt trac!) whats the off kilter melody that drops in around 2 min? was it sampled ? how was it made? got a nice boc quality to it, can pick up on some break samples near tthe end like the track disintegrates itself through the reverb, Thx!

custom synth sound, somewhere between flute and electric piano - from a distance

while were on the subject there is a break.

  3.

u mean a button that moves all parameters a bit more. 1-100. yeah ok that is diff a bit, but what if your really close to something quite good, and u press that, u may never find what u were after - and be further from it than b4. we call that 'pot' luck

Yeah exactly. It's risky. Like u said, I could be on to something. Usually if I can feel something sounds decent I'll begin the manual tweaking and cleaning.

Synplant looks like a quirky thing. I could mimic that using a more complex patch with hundreds more values and randomize everything in 1% increments.

I use this method mostly when I have a blank slate and am feeling lazy. It can be tough jumping into things cold when there's no idea of what sounds I want to get into. That being said, I am gearless thus subject to the electronic abyss. Shit can be scary. The elektron looks like fun id like to get my hands on one

more like u should have 2x reaktors , then make the one u like less, become more like the one u like, i guess thats what synplants more about.

  4. cant think of a smarter question, but pretty curious about that one : there is a 30min recording of Gescom, live in manchester in 2002.

are you involved in that ?

    u got a link?

just to be clear, theres a few geswackers

Did you really smash buttons into your keyboard randomly and come up with the name "Autechre"

mbe not random, but i had no idea after AU' of the outcome.

  5. Just how "generative" (not sure this is the right word for this) were some of the tracks on Confield? Tracks like Sim Gishel, Parhelic Triangle and Uviol, for example.

I've read so many rumors and theories about this, that I don't know what to believe at this point. I mean, it sure doesn't sound like you just hit record and then left the computer running for a few minutes, since all the tracks seems to go somewhere. Were you adjusting stuff on the fly or?

    hella good album btw

edit: also, last question. I promise. for realz.

    10% give or take

  6.

I've found out in this thread you guys have once performed with Fennesz. I'm guessing there are no recordings of it?

    Also found this: http://autechre.net.ua/en/articles/article11.htm

What year was that? How did it that you guys performed together, who contacted who?

You said playing with him "went well". Is there a chance you guys might ever do something like that again? Or a collaborated album? Maybe just 1 track even? Fennesz is quite the collaboration beast.

    *pushes it to the limit*

yeah i like his stuff a lot, i'd def do another gig with him i think he gets what we're doing

that brings me to another thing:

When doing collaborations/remixes, do you usually approach someone, or do you get approached? Or are there middlemen who do suggestions and lay connections?

    not done many,

zoviet france was mutual - we should do this, both agreed i think ben started it, might've been sean tho'

fennesz/roedelius, partly conspired by Pita MEGO

  7.

ok sean said repost so i repost

    a few more:

    1) how do you like cyclobe? (had this one earlier but it slipped... would be interested though; i think their stuff is genius)

    2) did either of you guys ever grow a full beard / moustache / any other kind of serious facial hair (PICS PLS!)

    3) would you do a collab with scott walker?

    4) do your wifes/gfs ever get jealous of your tight bromance?

    5) what do you think of oval's new style?

ah only just found out what keiselguhr was last nite.

  8.

    that button! lol

what do want random for anyway?

is elektrons beginner? anyone? help me out watmm - ae are on other planets now

    no i haven't

Perhaps random is the wrong word. That makes me think of those TOTALLY RANDO AUTECHRE MAX MSP videos you find on YouTube of a max patch farting out some junk. I'm thinking of controlled mutations rather. Jam that button a few times, get some alien squelching, then go in and tweak that beast to my liking. It feels slot like traveling in a light speed rocket in all different directions... You don't know what you're gonna find but that 0.00001% chance you find something interesting it's gonna be awesome and totally unique

  9. I've been using Reaktor for a few years now and find it hard to leave cause it's got a very nifty randomize 1-100% button. I'm getting tired of being stuck at my computer all day though. There any good beginner piece of hardware that would enable me to get the depth and randomization ability? You guys ever mess around with any Reaktor ensembles?

    that button! lol

    Hi Sean & Rob,

Paul Morley has an interesting theory that some band names are so great that they shape the music of the act ; that the band live up to their name, their name somehow gives them their sound, their aura. He was, of course, referring to Joy Division - suggesting that after they changed from Warsaw to JD, the name lifted them, they couldn't not live up to it.

Is Autechre one of these names? Certainly it's the most incredible label for your music, but when you found it , did you think it made sense of what you were doing, in some way?

Excuse me if that's bollocks, that's what you get for reading Morley.

nah i like it, he knows the power of words

partly his fault i got into all this shit to begin with

but yeah we had that title for ages (it was a lego feet track) and it just really stood out as a potent word, it was at least a year before we started using it as a name so we kind of knew by then that it was good

Is it true that you chose "au" because there was an au sound in the track, and then you randomly crunched a few keys on the keyboard to get "techre"?

Or is that one of those things on the internets I shouldn't believe?

well yeah, and the atari only held 8 char. so it might've turned out autechredwads or something if not for that.

  11. Yo. you (sean) mentioned having used renoise in the past. Did you use it for a long time or was it just for a short period of time? Have u used any other trackers like openMPT? Could u please name some tracks that you've released that were made in trackers (if any)?

and rob, have u used renoise at all also?

    thanks!!

yeah, its super slick, and retains that DIY vibe. kind of reminds me of a software ITT (military looking') radio i had when i was a kid.

  12. Hi Sean & Rob,

well as it was unique, that nailed it for a start. it was ours. i like the way it looked as we got to sit with it around for ages - it was initially a track name. Morleys alright!

  13.

Not sure if you guys caught this one...

    Hi guys!

Thank you for answering so many of these questions. In particular, I've really liked the advice for people making music which basically seems to be, "Do what feels right." It's something that I've thought numerous times before, but after a time tend to forget until I get reminded or think of it again. It's been especially difficult to remember this recently, since I've been trying to insert myself into the electronic scene here in Portland, OR where it seems that venues only want a certain type of music and I feel like I need to sound a certain way to get "in" with the people that make booking decisions. So thanks for reminding me, yet again. :)

My question is: Do you have any advice on how to get into playing shows in an environment that seems mostly closed off (even almost allergic to it, it seems) from anything that's the least bit experimental? Like, I've given my material to bookers/promoters, and they dig it, but don't want it played at their venues. It's quite a bit frustrating. I think you mentioned something about this weird-sameness going on in Europe right now, too.

I actually have another question, but maybe a little selfish. Will you listen to a few of my tracks and tell me what you think? I can PM some links.

Thanks again for inspiration, and awesome music!

dunno if were much use in getting u in any scenes in the US. they'd run a mile if u told them u even asked us.

just post yr links up here, no need to pm

  14. When you record jams are they multi-track/channel or 2 track? Curious if the editing is splicing or cutting individual tracks when an element got out of control or sounded bad.

happy to cut stereo file tbh, with editors as fast Wave Editor and so on.. i did some jams 8 track a few times cos of the mpc and nords being happy w 4 each, but just to be able to s/chain if needed on a whim. like the idea of 2ch = more of a craft

  15.

:emotawesomepm9: maybe you can refresh my memory of what other track I'm talking about. I feel like it was one of the quadrange tracks.. maybe but it felt like the entire reverb bed was spring (not just quick sections) and it sounded really nice.

the beginning of bnc castle, maybe? that might be a diff box actually, we had a beige one i can't rem the manufacturer tho, right noisy fucker, think robs got it now

PSE , a wheezy bastard with earth problems but deep

i was just informed by forum member Obel that the track is called blyz castl (probably one my favorites of that era, but what was that technically on, not quadrange or versions?). Did you just put an extra e at the end? is that halfway confirmation the song actually translates to bouncy castle ?

yeah, it was the PSE on that - japan only release of downloads only, sorry harder to get double 'only' action there.

  16. Have you enjoyed answering all these questions?

I like you guys put your self out here. Great thread to read. (what I have read in bits and pieces so far haha)

yeah, some tricky cos despite having the answers (i mean we are the subject, not say Maths or a given syllabus), which is ok - been done b4, but its like a race to get them down. with true feels ;)
