  1. Sean said in an interview that the newer live stuff was "more curves than points" or something like that. It's true. So no Kontrapunkt, sorry. I don't think they ever had ideas, it has always been "fuckery" from day 1 :braindance:

haha nice! But in my head, rainbow cerebricon was always "the ae sea shanty". That synth sounds a bit like a spaced-out accordion to me, and the rest of that piece always brought a sea storm to my mind. My fav section from the 14/15 live sets. Reminds me I've been wanting to go through all the sets to see which recording has the longest version of it.

Edit: The first part of c-shaenty really didn't need slowing down.

I like Stalker too, played the CoP and SoC but I didn't venture into mod territory. Years later I got a tiny nostalgia kick, so I checked the Anomaly. It's way harder to play because enemies are so much more dangerous, which at first was a challenge I gladly took on. Combat felt more exciting and raiding camps was fun. But the crafting (well obtaining stuff mostly) takes away too much focus and I slowly lost interest unfortunately.

Find memories of the atmosphere of the SoC and CoP games still alive tho - I hope Stalker2 delivers some more of that

It's an amazing world, right? There's nothing quite like it. I find myself daydreaming about the Zone sometimes, even when I don't play it for years sometimes. This sort of bleak psychedelia is where it's at!

It's true, Anomaly is demanding. You can change a lot of the things you mentioned in the gameplay settings, though. Anomaly went for a Zone sandbox, so you can forego the crafting system and the repressive economy completely, but it's still fun to check it out.

I distinctly remember getting the task to kill a Bandit, saw him on the map and thought "Well, he's just out in the wild in Garbage, I'll catch him later" as I still had some other tasks on. Next morning I see he went to the Bandit base in Dark Valley. Went there to scope him out for a day from the hills and the boi just didn't move out. That was early in my run and there was no way I could take on the Bandit base. The task was about to fail due to time limit and I desperately needed the money so I roamed the map until I killed a small squad of bandits by the transition point to Garbage. Donned the bandit outfit and casually waltzed into the base at night pretending to be a bandit. In the meantime, a  rainstorm had begun raging. The guy was sitting in a busy spot with guards moving around so I had to wait for the right second to go for a stealth kill (stealth kills are always jarring for me btw, they're cold-blooded murder). Knifed him from behind and snuck away quickly. All this with the shitty green NVG which can't handle lightnings. Stealth is broken in Stalker but Anomaly implemented a pretty good stealth kill system. it worked like a charm. I felt guilty and dirty but made it back in time to Barkeep in the rain. The atmosphere in Stalker is the real deal.

I do get a little bogged down just staring at a computer screen, but at the same time it is hard to get a comprehensive set of hardware that actually allows you to create what you envision, so it ends up in this cycle of getting more gear.

But at what point would it be enough gear? And what is it that you envision? A particular sound, or a specific way in which stuff is moving in time? Not trying to be snarky here, I'm genuinely curious.

What you envision might just be what is limiting you in your creative work. It can keep you from actually getting into contact with what the machine can do (generic you, not you personally). It takes time to really get into a good piece of gear, but it's always worth it.

i hate synthesizers, i hate looking at things, i hate computers, i hate typing, i hate clicking mouse, i want the music to come right out of my brain into the speakers, ill settle for nothing less

Assuming this isn't a shitpost: If you lack the willingness to put in the work, then you just want immediate results. This is very far away from any creative process, which is always a transformational process. It takes humbleness above all. You can't be unwilling to put in the work and then blame the instrument on top of that.

  5. Nice post @cern! I fully agree with the message, so I am not watching this XD

The great thing about pd and Max is that you can create your own set of limitations, for every project or idea, no matter how big or small.

Not gonna lie, many years ago, I bought Nord Lead, then Machinedrum, and kind of accidentally Monomachine. And yes, originally I heard of them because of Autechre. But I didn't buy the MD until I tried it at the local music store. Kept going back to that place for a couple of weeks, reading the manual online in between. That thing grew on me so hard that I eventually got me one.

But the reason I'll never sell these 3 is because I have done loads of great stuff with them (great as in, I really enjoy working with these machines). Most other stuff I sold again later, even killer hardware like the Ensoniq DP/4+. Just moved to a new place. I have always had a dedicated desk for music making, but right now my MD is standing separately on a crate in front of the sofa. I LOVE coming home and just playing with this one machine for an hour or two.

Also it seems like pd-extended is dead but now you can simply install externals from the pd window itself...

Has been for a long time now, and current-day vanilla pd beats old pd-extended on any level. The textfile objects, clone, etc. massively improved pd. Go with pd vanilla next time you want to try pd, you won't regret it. But also, allow it the time that it takes.

I found that it's best to give your instruments space instead of trying to force your own will on them. Explore and listen. Every good session is a conversation between you and the instrument. It's like any other healthy relationship💗 You can make complete tracks on a Boss DR-660 if you allow it to unfold.

I usually go to the nearest Music store to try stuff out and even go to friends home for trying gear.
There is a open minded community when I could say "Oh Im interested in a Octatrack" then I call a friend that says "Well come over to me and try it out first"

This is the one and only way. Glad I got into this before youtube became what it is today. You have to find what works for YOU. The "best" synth doesn't exist. No one can walk your path for you.

To stick to the topic however, every couple of years I get the idea to try out puredata and try to do whole tracks in it but it's always the sequencing that trips me up.

What is it about the sequencing that is tripping you up? Is it getting stuff to run in sync? pD is great, but I never got over windows, I am a ThinkPad lover. pd works best on unix systems. There are many externals that are incredible, you're also mentioning ceammc in a later post. But it kept crashing on win for me. Same with the else external which is incredible work, but just not made for windows. I eventually went on to Max, which was a massive qol upgrade, with optional global clock, and it's just stable and running a lot more smoothly (GUI eats a lot of cpu though).

In the beginning, I didn't know what to do with pd, but then I just started chaining up simple counters with metros, and having them run independently from each other, then sending this to hardware synths. Seeing that I am not constrained by a global bpm, but that I could have as many bpms as I wanted simultaneously was a massive lightbulb moment (not bpm anymore but you get the picture). Time isn't bound to grids anymore. pd and Max, and Supercollider, too, allow you to build incredible stuff, from very simple bits and pieces. But it's best to explore them with curiosity, instead of wanting them to do something for you. It's incredibly time-consuming to learn them, but I went to art academy where I could spend 5 years doing nothing else but this.

My "tracks" in pd/Max are always just multiple patches running, playing with them in the moment, trying things out, seeing how patches relate to each other. So it's become much more of a live thing. I saw that trying to rebuild stuff that exists already in grid-based seqs doesn't do a lot for me. Letting those number streams loose, on the other hand, is a whole world of fun! It's fucking beautiful how simple it is to make things communicate with each other in these environments. I stopped buying gear a long time ago, sold a lot, and gave some more to a very good friend of mine. All because of pd. Can't be arsed with Ableton any longer. It's like my ideas just don't fit that environment any more.

But for jamming with other people, hardware has always worked best for me, just sync up(by midi or by hand) and have fun. And just jamming away on a good drum machine is nice and relaxing after a long day. Still, none of this will make music for you. I found the worst enemy of creativity is anxiety and overthinking, not a lack of instruments.

  9. To those who've been to one of these recent concerts - Do they actually sell any merch still? They did in 2016, got me a SKAM shirt there, I didn't like the Autechre shirt they were selling. My Exai shirt has suffered from me ignoring that it's supposed to be washed at 30°. inb4 is it washable: The SKAM shirt has braille on the shoulder, I think it's maybe hot glue or some plastic, so it's actually raised. Didn't even notice until I washed it the first time.

Come to think of it, the 2014/15 artworks, all combined into one large pattern covering the entire fabric, would make for a pretty good button-up shirt.

it's better slower imo. like pitched down from 45 or pitched up from 33. same for the other side..

what the intercourse?? I thought slow was the real version! Definitely does sound better when slowed down! Is faster the actual reality of this? I think my files are still the same slsk downloads from 2003 that I've had on every computer ever since.

    I'm still free this weekend!

only reading this now and I am shitfaced already but I'll DM you a pint of Cragganmore.

Had a lengthy discussion with this Scottish friend of mine at a bar, never knew he was into AE?!? He knew their discography pretty well, I was quite surprised. I usually refrain from talking about Autechre irl as it just sends me off on a monologue.

All the live sets have taken me a tremendous amount of time to get through, and I mean all of them since the 2014/15 ones, they're just so good that I go 1 by 1 over a few days for each, I get really attached to certain sections. That said, this starting section of Bergen and also Turin (well actually all the sets except London B), just the first 1-2 minutes, they sound so much like a procession to me. Steadily marching towards some shimmering light above a far away structure.

  12. Right. thanks for passing on your interpretations I didn't really think they had clear definitions. Never assumed bad intentions, and I love flexible applications. But it's also true that I still forget about the possibility to just search this board.. My brain is still reeling from years on image boards. Still can't believe 420chan is dead, it was a good place.

  13. I rarely play video games these days but I usually always have some Stalker installed. Currently, it's Road To The North. It's a good mod! Might go for an hour or two this Sunday. I played Anomaly a lot during the first lockdown, but for me, freeplay Stalker is only fun until you are all geared up, at which point there isn't anything else to do really. I noticed that the biggest rush Anomaly ever gave me was when I got all the parts and tools for fixing up some good but broken rifle I had stashed away some in-game weeks earlier. But I always preferred story mods like OGSR. RTTN comes with an all-new storyline and has pretty good tasks. Can only recommend this mod if you want an expanded story mod for Stalker.

Yes, I used to play Stalker religiously.

I really hate the Think break. Well ok I don't hate it, the actual drum sounds are very tasty, I just hate the voice bits and I never understood why people actually include them when using the break. I mean cmon it's a break, you're already cutting it up, so why not exclude those bits? People actually like the annoying little chipmunk voice? I don't get it :trashbear:

    How does this suit you?

  15. I don't really know what the Burger and Schopenhauer reactions mean... Think they aren't clearly defined, and are applied with personal wiggle room(?) But then, I'm a neophyte.

Is Burger something like "OK Yankee"? I got a message recently (not here) that was "Cool burger!" It was affectionate, but I still have to ask what it meant. I might just be totally out of the loop, but the entries for Burger over at urbandictionary only added to my confusion.

Schop: Is this "That's deep", or is it a sarcastic "Wow, so deep man", or is it "OK incel"? I've used it too, but not in those ways, I don't know if there's an "official" meaning.

    Spoiler

    Incoming reactions...

Really? Well thanks, must have missed that. I like to have the AMAs on when I have the worst hangovers, quite soothing to have this calm voice talk about everything in the world, with nature grooving in the background. I'll have to get shit-faced this weekend so I can check again.

wOwOwOwOwOw at about 30 minutes into London B, why does it make me laugh so hard??
