I mean, he's already done the Hateful 8. I kinda liked it but that seemed to be his least well-received film ever.

I liked it too, great cast (and I also thought it was cool how much attention he put into staging the scenes given the whole thing or most of it took place in one room). His worst movie imo was his first one Resevoir Dogs, although I understand why a lot of people still really like it. But compared to what he did after it feels lackluster to me.

Why does he have this stupid rule in the first place?

I think his reasoning is that he wants his filmography to be lean and not have any big bombs or misses. When I heard him talk about it, he compares himself to mostly classical Hollywood filmmakers who got worse as they got older, arguing that they diluted their filmmography. I saw someone on social media say that this argument does not work these days because there are filmmakers like Scorsese, Lynch, and others who put out some of their best work when they were older. I don't care if he has some stupid arbitrary rule about how many films he is going to make, but he probably should have just kept it to himself so he could do what he wants and change his mind if necessary. He also more than any other filmmaker I know of has a youthful exuberance and endless enthusiasm when it comes to film making, so even if he stops doing films proper at some point I hope he still does miniseries or something. The whole thing seems dumb to me. Just make the damn films and release them. So few people these days even care or understand the concept of auteur in film that his assumptions about directors' filmographies are based on.
