  1. Yeah, I see that I missed the mailing list thread completely. Mods can get rid of this one if they want... then again, maybe this release does deserve it's own thread.

  2. I think, BOC in their earlier days, hit on a world that drew everyone in. This old electronic music world of 60s and 70s which has associations to cartoons, movies, nature, eagles and fuckin natural parks and boyscouts and just general mystery of memories, and they managed to nail it and stick it in a more modern package. I think maybe TCH didn't deliver as much on that mystery, and TH, even though it has, at least to me, a more promising concept, does not, for whatever reason deliver the old horror / thriller type of mood. I still feel like the world is there, and there are tracks that can be created that gives all those emotions, but I just don't feel like this is it. Although, a part of me also knows that the brain is what creates all this stuff and it is subjective, so it could be a matter of a persons life that determines how impactful a record is, but at the same time it feels like there are 'objective' sounds that kind of resonate with a lot of people, it's not like everyone is different about everything. So fuck if I know. I still like several of the tracks, but it's not like a heavyweight I guess.

You did a great job articulating why Campfire Headphase and, to a lesser extent, Tomorrow's Harvest don't hit the same heights as their previous work. The great thing about their previous work is their ability to convey nostalgia with a dark undercurrent.... it was the musical equivalent of thinking back on positive childhood memories as an adult and realizing that the situations might not have been so positive. Songs like Twoism also conveyed a sense of wonderment... there was an honesty to the music that is lacking in later works.

Which isn't to say that Campfire or Harvest are bad albums - they're very good - but they are missing that magic of earlier releases.

  3. I was skeptical about this one before it came out... Autechre seemed to be losing some quality control over the last five or so years. Oversteps was awesome, but Quaristice was subpar and Move of Ten is arguably their weakest release. A 2 hour album sounded like another Quaristice-style experiment destined for failure.

Having said that, this album completely surprised me. It has a very Gescom-y vibe in spots, especially on recks on, cloudline (which seems to use samples off of Skull Snap) and deco Loc (is that cut-up voice just before 4:00 saying "Gescom"?). bladelores and YJY UX are two of their best tracks ever.

I'm really looking forward to giving this one lots of repeat listens.

  4. It's always great to see people getting interested in classical music.

The first composer I got into was Khachaturian, through his solo piano music. His music is accessible and rhythmically interesting. Last movement of his violin concerto:

Recently, I've been listening to a lot of Prokofiev. The 1st movement of the 2nd piano concerto is incredibly intense (inspired by the suicide of a close friend, it's also considered to have the most difficult piano solo in the standard repertoire):

(the video contains first and second movements)

  5. Mine just arrived, added it to discogs but not showing up yet

It looks like the first disc has been re-pressed and the 2nd has been re-cut

though the discs look scuffed or stained badly all over, on first listen it dont seem to affect the sound but ive had a few crackles and surface noise, would like to hear how other copies are incase i was unlucky.

yeah mine showed up about 20 mins ago (i'm halfway through the last track on the B side)

i've noticed a few crackles too so far, to be honest.

So the conclusion is that the repress still has problems? I guess I'll go for the CD this time, since I already have the first mispress on vinyl.

  6. I ran across this tidbit on the wiki page about trepanation:

"Amanda Feilding also performed a self-trepanation with a drill, while her partner Joey Mellen filmed the operation, in the film titled Heartbeat in the Brain. The film has since been lost. Portions of the film can be seen, however, in the documentary A Hole in the Head."

  7. has anyone else got a bad pressing, or is it just me?

the same thing happens to my copy of Oversteps not as bad as that though

my oversteps (and indeed everything else, except my copy of confield) plays perfectly, so i'm more inclined to believe i have a bad pressing

it can happen, i know from personal experience i don't have the time or resources to test every copy of vinyl i've pressed.

Seems uncharacteristic for Skam, though... maybe you could shoot them an email and see if they'd replace it. I've never had a bad pressing from them, and I have tons of Skam vinyl.

Warp, on the other hand, can be pretty spotty. My copy of Warp20 Unheard has chips in the sides of the vinyl, and the records have tons of surface noise. Great packaging for dud records
