  1. Anyone wonder what that swirl is on No Cares? Frequency wise, it's symmetrical, which intrigues me.

You know what, I suspect it's just the reflection (aliasing, folding) you get from not having a reconstruction filter.  It's probably just sampled at about 20-22 kHz, for a Nyquist frequency of about 10-11 kHz.  (Which is curious, as the closest the FZ-1 gets is 18 kHz.)

(And it still tickles me that it's been mastered to 48 kHz when it would literally sound identical at 32 kHz.  At least the DAT player was filtered this time!)

  2. Yeah, though I wouldn't even say he was ahead of other musicians, so much as he was (and still is, to a certain extent) so idiosyncratic that if he didn't make this music, no-one else would either, ever. Which is a good philosophy to have, largely doing your own thing.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that any of his tracks have what you might call proper names, though... I guess that's the nature of abstract, instrumental music.

  3. ICBYD would be my all time favorite if you include the bonus tracks and remove Ventolin

Totally!  I could live without some of the older tracks on that album too.  I much prefer a lot of the new old stock tracks.  This album has grown on me to a big extent, from one of my least favourites of his to one of my favourites.  The new tracks make it my firm favourite album of his now, I think.  I can't imagine why they didn't originally bump off some of the older tracks for some of the previously-unreleased ones, it would have been much stronger for it.

The two Ventolin releases, taken as a mini album in their own right, are really neat too.  Difficult in places, but so out there that there's nothing else like them.  And the On pair, for that matter.  That whole era.

  4. MfM has as much of a release chance as Half Life 3 does

Theoretically, there should be less potential project management issues when the project in question is being undertaken by a single person, who claimed seven years ago to already have completed it... Though I have no idea what goes on in his world. I was as surprised as anyone when he actually released all those old tracks on SoundCloud and some turned out to be amongst his best work. So maybe he's telling the truth after all. Who knows?
  5. From https://aphextwin.warp.net/release/68148-aphex-twin-selected-ambient-works-volume-ii:

    Blue Calx:

Recorded in Linmiri [Lannerlog bedroom studio], probably the last track I ever recorded in that house, quite fitting really, end of that era. I made it when coming back to visit my parents in Cornwall after moving away to go to college to do a degree in microelectronic engineering, which I thankfully never finished, was so boring, always preferred teaching myself, so much more satisfying, letting your mind wander where it needs to go. I heard Derrick May pressed this up onto vinyl so he could DJ it, I wonder if that was true?

track 19 [side 5, track 2, omitted from CDs] ("Stone in Focus"):

This track has now thankfully been found and uploaded here, I was very worried it had been lost, very relieved*** It was not included on the original CD’s as there wasn't enough room. I usually always give priority to the vinyl versions of all my releases as I never ever really liked CD's much, think I would have liked CD's a little bit more if you could put 90 mins on them, who decided they were to be 74 mins anyway? Thinking about this now I'd love to try and get Warp to do high quality chrome cassette versions of all my Warp musics, maybe even metal ones if possible. If I wait a year or so for this I could include all the extras on the cassettes as there would be plenty of room, would have to sign the tracks over to Warp first for a physical release, something I don't have to do for this website but that shouldn't be too difficult.

    #22 ("Spots"):

Someone I used to know, you know who you are, worked as a cleaner in a police station and kindly pinched me a police interview tape. It was with a woman who murdered her husband, it's the background audio in this track.

    #23 ("Tassels"):

featuring an EMS synthi 'a', mk1, Studiomaster star mixer, recorded 184 Southgate road, 1st floor, London. Bought the synthi when I was about 19 from Robin wood at ems, Ladock, Cornwall. Saved all my money for it for a long time, one of the first synths I ever bought and I know that machine inside and out, magical piece of equipment, always felt like it was made specially for me.

    This?

    Seems like bitcrushing to me.

That's the one! Hmm, low sample rate, no reconstruction filter, leading to aliasing/folding? Yeah, that sounds likely. So probably something cheap and digital. (Or S+H, BBD, etc.) The symmetry on the other axis too suggests it could even be a pingpong loop on a sampler.

I guess I shouldn't have bought a bunch of these on Bleep a few weeks ago, given the new bonus tracks...

    Just send him/warp a message/

Good idea, thanks!  I've now sent one.  I (re-)bought a bunch of Aphex Twin albums a few months ago on the main Bleep store, so I'm hoping the new tracks will be copied to the main store, or the purchases on the main store will be copied across to the Aphex Twin one.  I can't imagine I'm the only person hoping that, either!

    Well, I got a reply.  That's a "no".  Shame.

  9. I'm up for any album recommendations, thanks!  Out of those, I know the Apollo sublabel of R&S, whose File Under Ambient compilation switched me on to David Morley, who I'm digging these days.  DiN's another good label.  But yeah, I'd love to know of more.  I'll check those others out, thanks!

  10. I love these albums the most, I think:

    • Air
    • A Day In the Park
    • Dreamfish
    • The Fires of Ork
    • From Within
    • The MS-Series
    • Outland
    • Phonehead
    • Psychonavigation
    • The Putney
    • Re:sonate
    • Sferics
    • Shades of Orion
    • Silence 5
    • Waiting for Snow
    • Xangadix
    • Xangadix 2
    • Zenith

Though some of them could be whittled down to an even better compilation...

I really think the kind of ambient techno you get in some Fax releases, and Warp's Artificial Intelligence series should have been more of a thing...  Or maybe it is and I just don't know where to look...
  11. You turned your back on the mighty and holy QuadraVerb?

    Heathen!

Alas, my setup and workflow encourage using only plugs for effects (aside from spring reverb recorded during production itself, sometimes inside a patch rather than at the end). I think most people would be hard pushed to tell what anyone's using anyway, let alone care. So I barely used my QuadraVerb, U-220 or DrumStation, so Nina insisted I get rid of them, which admittedly was a sensible move. I also sold a bunch of modules I wasn't using, including a Metasonix one. I'm more than happy with my current rig though.

Which is now this (plus 808 style maracas I haven't installed yet, because I've been too busy writing):

Tidy studio is nice but there's usually better ways to spend time in your creative space init.

If you're making some shit hot tunes you don't really wanna waste your vibez on organising ur cables by weight and smell.

Well, a couple years ago I would've agreed.

Now I think a studio (or any space) should be optimized towards letting you do whatever it is you wanna do. Otherwise it's not 'a studio' so much as 'an obstacle course between you and your goals'.

I'd definitely recommend reducing friction and having everything at your fingertips. I got rid for the QuadraVerb and just use plugs for post/effects. I have a one-in-one-out basis for new modules, so they're all within arm's reach. If you can use them via muscle memory, so much the better.

As far as organising cables goes, because Nina was kind enough to make a handy holder for mine, it makes it far quicker for me to find and grab one I need in the moment. Spend a bit of time when you're not making music anyway, to save time when you are, so you don't get dragged out of the zone by the minutiae of e.g. finding a cable.

  13. I have always imagined each machine needs to be shut down individually, like computers. Some of them have certain "shut down processes" and you shouldn't just cut off the power to them. This is just how I've always seen it, could be vastly inaccurate but i'd rather be safe than sorry

Some do, some don't.  Even some computers don't.  I never had to shut down a C64, or DOS, but always shut down UNIXes properly.  It depends on the firmware and OS, when it saves files, if it can multitask (so is likely to be doing lots of things in the background besides what the user's seeing), etc.  I know our step sequencer's fine to turn off at any time, and I vaguely remember using a sampler which was too.

Basically, yeah, if it has a shutdown process, use it.

  14. i have more options for crazy filters now im onto eurorack...

I did that thing again where I don't use a module for ages, consider selling it, decide to give it a go just to make sure first, and end up using it all the time.  After ignoring the A-124 for far too long, it's been the only filter in my last two tracks, if memory serves.  So there's a tip for you.  Wasp!
