  1. anything going on with "the teleport regent"?

Oh man, I'd love more tracks in the style of "Zenith Romancer". Is that one out in the wild? So good.

(Listening back to the Teleport Regent tracks I have, I realized that one called "Orion Vomit" is a version of Z Reticuli (from Dreamhunter) but with live bass guitar. :emotawesomepm9: )

  2. What was his kit list for go plastic?

I think so. The interview that's from is from that era and that's what they focus on in the interview. The 2 Orville boxes listed might be a mistake.... I also thought he had both a Orville and a DSP4000.

Here's that interview...also contains short interviews with Broadcast, Plaid and Clark

I think it's safe to say he DID use a computer on Go Plastic..its in the gearlist and he talks about using Reaktor in that interview on Xltronic and he obviously used the Orville editor. But whether he did do audio editing is the question. Unless he's TOTALLY fibbing big time about this, I doubt he was doing extensive like... Telefone Tel Aviv style audio choppery.

But at the same time I do think he still likes to be a bit cagey about his process... like in that recent interview ABOUT his software, there's no mention of Reaktor (or Eventide)..... whhhatt.

  3. Just being a dork and reading more interviews...

    Here's a bit from 2002:

"I don't use Logic Audio Platinum. I hate computer editing, and I hate computer sequencing. The music I am into comes from using multitrack tape recorders and dubbing for composition. Once you've edited on tape, computer editing is a piece of shit. It is so much more of a vibe to cut up tape and line things up using your ears, not your eyes. Now I make a composition from start to finish instead of making a track and editing it afterwards".

    It also had a gearlist:

    Akai S6000 sampler
    DRX 1066 compressor (2)
    Eventide Orville Harmonizer (2)
Rackmount PC with various virtual-synthesis software programs
  4. Here's another quote from that FM interview that related to the last points being made...

I don't do endorsements and I don't do interviews with technology mags because I don't want to be showing what's in my studio and saying 'you've got to have this to make the cool new music'. I used to be super secretive but now I don't care any more because - more than ever - I'm convinced that 'the secret' is something that I can't actually give away… I'd love if you emphasized that. That's why I've been reticent to do this kind of interview for years. You have to remember: it's all about how you approach the gear, not the gear itself.

    Also...

People talk about 'retail therapy'. And I have the opposite. I have "retail depression'. After I've bought something for a couple of weeks I'm like 'Urggh...'. For me owning a new instrument is a responsibility. I'm absolutely committed to exploring it so whenever it arrives there's a big job at hand.

Which is very evident in how he's mastered the QY700 and gotten deep into the Eventide boxes.

In the other interview posted on xltronic he touches on how it's hard to share patches for the Orville/DSP4000 and that "ones who can afford it have no interest in using it as a synthesizer".

Edit - I just thought that last bit was interesting... not saying that because he could afford an DSP4000 he had the upperhand. I agree that it was about the execution and his creativity. I remember when Go Plastic came out.... nothing else compared to it besides Windowlicker.

  5. Figured I'd drop this here, rather than the Domgen Furies software thread...

Found this interview where Tom is asked how the audio edit was done on Go Plastic. The interview is in Japanese, so here's a web-translation:

Q: The audio editing How do I perform?

A: 2, 3 years ago with tape to learn how to edit it again, and then, with the tape or as a team succeeded. Tape, and cut and paste the real work is like. The GO PLASTIC" by the computer edit wasn't done at all. To edit the computer used to don't like to go through the most. But no taste. I'm not approaching empty steps. Edit on the computer, when we don't do things I do as much as possible, try to avoid. Oh well, either way, I write songs in the way there is no need for Edit so that it can.

It sounds like he's saying it was edited on tape... can you imagine?

If anyone can read Japanese and give us a better translation, the interview is here. Some other good tidbits in there as well.

  6. I think i remember dave getting signed to mu at one point. if anyone remembers the mu forum (rip) , signed artists to mu, used to be in orange if they had a forum account, and people assumed he was gona have his first release on there but then the rephlex download shop opened and volume 1 was released

I remember Mike dropped Monolith's "Farewell Frenchman" in his Electronic Explorations mix before it came out. I could have sworn he said something like "forthcoming on Planet Mu" when the mix was posted, although now the tracklist mentions Rephlex.

    MORE Monolith please!!!

  7. wow starting to see reports that this was found hidden in the alternative section of a record store in nyc.
